Abstract

A distal tip protector, protection shield, or packaging insert to protect the distal segment of a guidewire projecting from a guidewire carrier.

Claims

1. A guidewire tip protector/carrier assembly comprising:

a guidewire having a distal tip, the guidewire being disposed within

a coiled tubular carrier, the carrier having an outside diameter and a delivery end, which defines a delivery end opening, the assembly further comprising;

a tip protective packaging insert to protect the tip of the guidewire contained within the helical tubular carrier and projecting from the carrier distal end opening the insert comprising a substantially flat base, the base having a carrier side and a back side, the base having located on the carrier side carrier engagement means upwardly projecting from the base, the engagement means being configured to couple to the carrier to retain the protector adjacent the delivery end opening of the carrier and to be thereby retained.

2. A tip protective packaging insert of claim 1 which further includes tabs, upwardly projecting from the base which engage and support the carrier at a location separate from that of the engagement means to support and align the carrier with respect to the protector.

3. A tip protective packaging insert of claim 1 in which the engagement means comprises separate at least two oppositely disposed hooks, the hooks being separated a distance slightly larger than the outside diameter of the carrier to be thereby retained.
