Abstract

A first device implements an application platform that is shared with a second device. The application platform can be implemented so that the first device and the second device operate to have a same identity to at least the network service. The first device provides a user interface in order to receive input for accessing or using the network service. Additionally, the first device communicates input received in response to providing the user interface to the network service. The first device can receive a token from the network service in response to communicating the input. Additionally, the first device can communicate a set of data items to the second device. The set of data items includes the token and one or more identifiers that enable the second device to access and use the network service while appearing as the first device to the network service.

Claims

1. A method for utilizing a network service using multiple devices, the method being implemented by one or more processors and comprising:

implementing, on a first device, an application platform that is shared with a second device, the application platform being implemented so that the first device and the second device can operate to have a same identity to at least the network service;

providing, on the first device, a user interface in order to receive input for accessing or using the network service;

communicating, from the first device, input received in response to providing the user interface, the input being communicated to the network service;

receiving a token from the network service in response to communicating the input; and

communicating a set of data items to the second device, the set of data items including the token and one or more identifiers that enable the second device to access and use the network service while appearing as the first device to the network service.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising accessing the network service on the second device in order to receive streaming media from the network service.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein communicating the set of data items includes communicating a cookie stored on the first device.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein communicating the set of data items includes communicating a machine identifier of the first device.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving a token includes receiving an authentication token.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein providing the user interface, communicating the input, receiving the token, and communicating the set of data items are each performed using the application platform of the first device.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising controlling the second device to playback streaming media from the network service in accordance with one or more rules of the network service.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising signaling one or more links to the second device that identify streaming media provided from the network service.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the first device and the second device access the network service concurrently.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

while the second device receives a plurality of links from the network service, receiving a trigger from the second device corresponding to a user interface event;

displaying a user interface feature corresponding to the user interface event.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein receiving the trigger from the second device includes receiving an identifier for the user interface event, and accessing the network service using the identifier in order to determine the user interface feature.

12. A method for utilizing a network service using multiple devices, the method being implemented by one or more processors and comprising:

implementing, on a playback device, an application platform that is shared with a user interface device, the application platform being implemented so that the playback device and the user interface device can operate to have a same identity to at least the network service;

on the playback device, communicating with the user interface device to receive a set of data items, the set of data items including (i) a token communicated by the network service to the user interface device, and (ii) one or more identifiers that are used by the user interface device in order to access the network service; and

accessing the network service using the token and the one or more identifiers received from the user interface device.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein accessing the network service includes receiving streaming media from the network service.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein communicating with the user interface device to receive the set of data items includes receiving a cookie stored on the first device.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein communicating with the user interface device to receive the set of data items includes receiving a machine identifier of the first device.

16. The method of claim 12, wherein receiving the token includes receiving an authentication token.

17. The method of claim 12, wherein communicating with the user interface device and accessing the network service are each performed using the application platform of the playback device.

18. The method of claim 12, wherein accessing the network service is performed concurrently with the user interface device accessing the network service.

19. The method of claim 12, further comprising:

receiving, from the user interface device, a plurality of links for identifying streaming media;

retrieving, from the network service, streaming media identified by each of the plurality of links;

while retrieving the streaming media identified by each of the plurality of links, detecting an occurrence of a user interface event triggered by the network service; and

communicating data identifying the user interface event to the first device.

20. A system comprising:

a first device, operable to provide a user interface;

a second device, operable to provide a data output component;

wherein each of the first device and the second device implement an application platform, the application platform being implemented on each of the first device and second device so that the first device and the second device can appear as a same to at least the network service

wherein the first device;

provides a user interface in order to receive input for accessing or using the network service;

communicates input received in response to providing the user interface, the input being communicated to the network service;

receives a token from the network service in response to communicating the input; and

communicates a set of data items to the second device, the set of data items including the token and one or more identifiers that enable the second device to access and use the network service while appearing as the first device to the network service;

wherein the second device;

communicates with the first device to receive the set of data items; and

accesses the network service using the set of data items received from the first device.

21. The system of claim 20, wherein the first device communicates a set of links to the second device, the set of links locating a corresponding set of network service data items on the network service, and wherein the second device uses the set of links to retrieve network service data items from the network service.

22. The system of claim 20, wherein the second device:

detects an occurrence of a user interface event triggered by the network service; and

communicates data identifying the user interface event to the first device; and

wherein the first device

responds to the data identifying the user interface event by displaying a user interface feature corresponding to the user interface event.

23. The system of claim 20, wherein the set of data items includes an identifier used by the first device to initially access the network service.

24. The system of claim 23, wherein the set of data items includes one or more of (i) a cookie stored on the first device, or (ii) a machine identifier of the first device.

25. The system of claim 20, wherein the token includes an authentication token.

26. The system of claim 20, wherein the first device uses the application platform to perform each of providing the user interface, communicating the input, receiving the token, and communicating the set of data items, and wherein the second device uses the application platform to perform each of communicating with the first device, and accessing the network service.

27. The system of claim 20, wherein the first device operates to control the second device in playing back streaming media from the network service in accordance with one or more rules of the network service.

28. The system of claim 20, wherein the first device signals one or more links to the second device that identify streaming media provided from the network service.

29. The system of claim 20, wherein the first device and the second device access the network service concurrently.

30. A computing device comprising:

a memory resource that stores a set of instructions;

one or more processors, that retrieve instructions from memory in performing;

implementing an application platform that is shared with a second device, the application platform being implemented so that the computing device and the second device can operate to have a same identity to at least the network service;

providing a user interface in order to receive input for accessing or using the network service;

communicating input received in response to providing the user interface, the input being communicated to the network service;

receiving a token from the network service in response to communicating the input; and

communicating a set of data items to the second device, the set of data items including the token and one or more identifiers that enable the second device to access and use the network service while appearing as the computing device to the network service.
