Abstract

A mobile device application adapted to provide multimedia content to a target canvas is described. The application includes sets of instructions for: establishing a communication link with an external system associated with the target canvas; rendering multimedia content for playback by the target canvas; and sending the rendered multimedia content to the target canvas over the communication link. A mobile device application adapted to execute web-based applications in a browser associated with an external system includes sets of instructions for: establishing a communication link with the external system; accessing a web-based application; and rendering content associated with the application and sending the rendered content to the external system for display in the browser. A system adapted to provide multimedia content includes: a target adapted to display multimedia content; a host adapted to generate multimedia content; and a remote server adapted to at least partially control the display of multimedia content.

Claims

1. A mobile device application adapted to provide multimedia content to a target canvas, the application comprising sets of instructions for:

establishing a communication link with an external system associated with the target canvas;

rendering multimedia content for playback by the target canvas; and

sending the rendered multimedia content to the target canvas over the communication link.

2. The mobile device application of claim 1, wherein rendering the multimedia content comprises processing the multimedia content using a hardware encoder of the mobile device.

3. The mobile device application of claim 1 further comprising sets of instructions for:

rendering multimedia content for playback by an alternative target canvas of the external system; and

sending the rendered multimedia content to the alternative target canvas over the communication link.

4. The mobile device application of claim 1, wherein rendering multimedia content for playback by the target canvas comprises:

determining a bandwidth across the communication link;

determining a main application rendering rate; and

encoding the multimedia content based at least partly on at least one of the bandwidth and the main application rendering rate.

5. The mobile device application of claim 1, wherein the external system is a vehicle display unit.

6. The mobile device application of claim 1, wherein the external system is a medical device.

7. The mobile device application of claim 1 further comprising sets of instructions for:

receiving a user input from the external system across the communication link; and

modifying the rendered multimedia content based at least partly on the user input.

8. A mobile device application adapted to execute web-based applications in a web browser associated with an external system, the application comprising sets of instructions for:

establishing a communication link with the external system;

accessing a particular web-based application; and

rendering content associated with the particular web-based application and sending the rendered content to the external system for display.

9. The mobile device application of claim 8 further comprising sets of instructions for receiving user inputs from the external system and providing the inputs to the particular web-based application.

10. The mobile device application of claim 8, wherein the communication link comprises a wireless connection.

11. The mobile device application of claim 8, wherein the external system is a vehicle display unit.

12. The mobile device application of claim 8, wherein the mobile device application is adapted to be executed by a smartphone.

13. The mobile device application of claim 8, wherein the particular web-based application is accessed via a uniform resource locator.

14. The mobile device application of claim 8, wherein the particular web-based application is accessed via at least one cellular communication network.

15. A system adapted to provide multimedia content to a user, the system comprising:

a target adapted to display multimedia content;

a host adapted to generate multimedia content for display by the target element; and

a remote server adapted to interact with the host element to at least partially control the display of multimedia content.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the host is a mobile device.

17. The system of claim 15, wherein the target is a vehicle display unit.

18. The system of claim 15, wherein the host and the remote server communicate across at least one wireless connection.

19. The system of claim 15, wherein the host and the target communicate across at least one wireless connection.

20. The system of claim 15, wherein the multimedia content comprises video content.
