Abstract

Apparatus is described for administering a substance to a subject. A vial contains the substance and a stopper is disposed within the vial and is slidably coupled to the vial. A first threaded element is (a) rotatable with respect to the vial and (b) substantially immobile proximally with respect to the vial during rotation of the first threaded element. A second threaded element is threadedly coupled to the first threaded element. At least a distal end of the second threaded element is substantially non-rotatable with respect to the vial, and the distal end of the second threaded element defines a coupling portion that couples the second threaded element to the stopper. The first threaded element, by rotating, linearly advances the stopper and at least the distal end of the second threaded element toward a distal end of the vial. Other embodiments are also described.

93. A rotary drive element for a cylindrical vial comprising:

a cylindrical cog with a plurality of circumferential protrusions, said cylindrical cog disposed at least partially outside of an end of the cylindrical vial;

an extension to said cylindrical cog, said extension fit into an opening in said end of the cylindrical vial, and said extension and said cylindrical cog rotatable with respect to the cylindrical vial but substantially immobile with respect to the cylindrical vial.

94. The rotary drive element of claim 93, wherein a width of said extension substantially equal to at least one an inner diameter of the cylindrical vial and said opening.

95. The rotary drive element of claim 93, wherein said extension fits snugly into said opening.

96. The rotary drive element of claim 93, wherein said extension aligns said cylindrical cog and the cylindrical vial.

97. The rotary drive element of claim 93, wherein said extension is coaxial to said cylindrical cog.

98. The rotary drive element of claim 93, wherein said cylindrical cog and said extension are integrally formed.

99. The rotary drive element of claim 93, wherein an outer diameter of said cylindrical cog is greater than in inner diameter of said opening.

100. A system for converting a rotation motion external to a cylindrical vial into a linear motion inside the cylindrical vial comprising:

a drive assembly partially inserted into an opening in an end of the cylindrical vial;

said drive assembly including;

a cylindrical cog with a plurality of circumferential protrusions, said cylindrical cog disposed at least partially outside of the cylindrical vial,

a first threaded element joined to said cylindrical cog; and

an extension to said cylindrical cog, said extension fit into said opening;

said extension and said cylindrical clog rotatable with respect to the cylindrical vial and substantially immobile with respect to the cylindrical vial, and

a second threaded element;

said second threaded element threadably coupled to said first threaded element;

wherein rotating said cylindrical cog rotates said first threaded element with respect to said second threaded element linearly advancing said second threaded element with respect to the cylindrical vial.

101. The system of claim 100, further comprising:

a plunger slidably disposed inside of the cylindrical vial, said plunger joined to said second cylindrical threaded element, and

wherein said plunger impedes rotation of said second threaded cylindrical element with respect to the cylindrical vial.

102. The system of claim 100, wherein said stopper aligns said second threaded cylindrical element coaxially with the cylindrical vial.

103. The system of claim 100, wherein a width of said extension substantially equal to at least one of an inner diameter of the cylindrical vial and said opening.

104. The system of claim 100, wherein said extension fits snugly into said opening.

105. The system of claim 100, wherein said extensions aligns said cylindrical cog and the cylindrical vial.

106. The system of claim 100, wherein said cylindrical cog includes a circular cylinder having a diameter greater than at least one of said opening and an inner diameter of the cylindrical vial.

107. The system of claim 100, wherein said cylindrical cog and said extension have a form of coaxial cylinders.

108. The system of claim 100, wherein said cylindrical cog and said extension are integrally formed.

109. A method for driving linear motion inside a cylindrical vial comprising:

providing

a rotary drive including;

a cylindrical cog with a plurality of circumferential protrusions;

an extension protruding from an end said cylindrical cog and a first threaded element joined to said cylindrical cog,

a second threaded element inside the cylindrical vial;

threadably coupling said first threaded element to said second threaded element;

fitting said extension into an opening in an end of the cylindrical vial to retain said rotary drive immobile and rotatable with respect to the cylindrical vial and at least partially external to the cylindrical vial; and

rotating said rotary drive to rotate said first threaded element with respect to said second threaded element.

110. The method of claim 109, wherein a width of said extension is substantially equal to at least one of a width of said opening and an inner diameter of the cylindrical vial.

111. The method of claim 109, further comprising impeding rotation of said second threaded element with respect to the cylindrical vial.

112. The method of claim 111, wherein said impeding is by friction with an inner surface of the cylindrical vial.

113. The method of claim 109, further including advancing a plunger with said second threaded element.
