Abstract

A method for controlling a screen in a data processing system to generate displays that include portions of an underlying scene is disclosed. The method includes displaying on the screen a first displayed scene, detecting a long touch gesture, and displaying a second scene on the screen. The first displayed scene is characterized by a first magnification and a first offset relative to the underlying scene. The second displayed scene includes a different portion of the underlying scene and is characterized by a second magnification that is different from the first magnification. In one aspect of the invention, the second displayed scene is characterized by a second offset that is determined by the long touch gesture, and the second offset depends on the first displayed scene and the long touch gesture.

Claims

1. A method for controlling a screen in a data processing system to generate displays comprising portions of an underlying scene, said method comprising

displaying on said screen a first displayed scene comprising a first portion of said underlying scene, said first displayed scene being characterized by a first magnification and a first offset relative to said underlying scene;

detecting a long touch gesture on said screen at a first location, said long touch gesture being characterized by a first time period; and

displaying a second displayed scene on said screen, said second displayed scene comprising a different portion of said underlying scene and being characterized by a second magnification that is different from said first magnification.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein said second displayed scene is characterized by a second offset that is determined by said long touch gesture.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein said second offset depends on said first displayed scene and said long touch gesture.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein said long touch gesture is characterized by first and second locations separated by a distance on said screen at which a user touches said screen and wherein said second magnification is greater than said first magnification if said distance is greater than a first distance.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein said long touch gesture is characterized by first and second locations separated by a distance on said screen at which a user touches said screen and wherein said second magnification is less than said first magnification if said distance is less than a first distance.

The method of claim 1 further comprising displaying a third displayed scene on said screen after a second time period if said long touch gesture is maintained for that second time period, said third displayed scene comprising a different portion of said underlying scene and being characterized by a third magnification and a third offset.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein said second time period is less than said first time period.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein said screen displays said first displayed scene when said long touch gesture is terminated.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein said screen continues to display said second displayed screen when said long touch gesture is terminated.

2. The method of Claim I wherein said second magnification changes continuously as long as said long touch gesture is maintained for a time longer than a predetermined time.

11. A computer readable medium that stores instructions that cause a data processing system that controls a screen in a data processing system to generate displays comprising portions of an underlying scene, said method comprising:

displaying on said screen a first displayed scene comprising a first portion of said underlying scene, said first displayed scene being characterized by a first magnification and a first offset relative to said underlying scene;

detecting a long touch gesture on said screen at a first location, said long touch gesture being characterized by a first time period; and

displaying a second displayed scene on said screen, said second displayed scene comprising a different portion of said underlying scene and being characterized by a second magnification that is different from said first magnification.

12. The computer readable medium of claim 11 wherein said second magnification changes continuously as long as said long touch gesture is maintained for a time longer than a predetermined time.

13. The computer readable medium of claim 11 wherein said second displayed scene is characterized by a second offset that is determined by said long touch gesture.

14. The computer readable medium of claim 13 wherein said second offset depends on said first displayed scene and said long touch gesture.

15. The computer readable medium of claim 11 wherein said long touch gesture is characterized by first and second locations separated by a distance on said screen at which a user touches said screen and wherein said second magnification is greater than said first magnification if said distance is greater than a first distance.

16. The computer readable medium of claim 11 wherein said long touch gesture is characterized by first and second locations separated by a distance on said screen at which a user touches said screen and wherein said second magnification is less than said first magnification if said distance is less than a first distance.

17. The computer readable medium of claim 11 further comprising displaying a third displayed scene on said screen after a second time period if said long touch gesture is maintained for that second time period, said third displayed scene comprising a different portion of said underlying scene and being characterized by a third magnification and a third offset.

18. The computer readable medium of claim 17 wherein said second time period is less than said first time period.

19. The computer readable medium of claim 11 wherein said screen displays said first displayed scene when said long touch gesture is terminated.

20. The computer readable medium of claim 11 wherein said screen continues to display said second displayed screen when said long touch gesture is terminated.
