Abstract

When a user sees a content item presented by a social networking system, the user may select an option to save the content item. The saved content item may be reinserted in a newsfeed presented to the user, integrated into collections, archived, used for notifications to the user, or otherwise subsequently presented to the user. A plug-in may be used to save content items accessed through websites external to the social networking system. As privacy settings associated with a saved content item are modified, the modified privacy settings are applied to the saved content item, which may prevent the user saving the content item from subsequently viewing the saved content item.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

presenting one or more content items, each associated with a time, to a user of a social networking system user in a newsfeed comprising a chronological list of the content items based on the times associated with the content items;

receiving a selection of a content item from the presented one or more content items;

saving the selected content item and a description of a state of the selected content item when the selection was received in the social networking system;

retrieving information associated with the user by the social networking system; and

responsive to the retrieved information associated with the user satisfying one or more criteria, presenting the saved selected content item to the user.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein presenting the saved selected content item comprises:

including the stored selected content item in the newsfeed based on a time more recent than the time associated with the selected stored content item when it was initially presented.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein presenting the saved selected content item comprises:

transmitting a notification including the selected stored content item to the user.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the retrieved information associated with the user satisfying one or more criteria comprises:

determining a location associated with the saved selected content item is within a threshold distance of a location associated with the user.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the retrieved information associated with the user satisfying one or more criteria comprises:

determining a current time is greater than a threshold time from a time when the saved selected content item was saved.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the retrieved information associated with the user satisfying one or more criteria comprises:

determining the user has interacted with the social networking system for at least a threshold length of time.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the retrieved information associated with the user satisfying one or more criteria comprises:

determining at least a threshold number of saved content items are associated with the user.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the retrieved information associated with the user satisfying one or more criteria comprises:

determining a current time is a specified time of day associated with the user.

9. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the retrieved information associated with the user satisfying one or more criteria comprises:

determining a type of interaction with the selected content item was received from another user connected to the user.

10. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, presenting the saved selected content item to the user is subject to one or more privacy settings associated with the saved selected content item by an additional user associated with the saved selected content item.

11. The computer-implemented method of claim 10, wherein the one or more privacy settings are determined at a time when the saved selected content item is to be presented.

12. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein presenting the saved selected content item comprises:

presenting the saved selected content item having the state of the saved selected content item when the selection was received; and

presenting modifications to the saved selected content item occurring after the saving, the modifications visually distinguished from the state of the saved selected content item when the selection was received.

13. A computer-implemented method comprising:

presenting one or more content items to a user of a social networking system user in a newsfeed comprising a list of the content items;

receiving a selection of a content item form the presented one or more content items;

saving the selected content item and a description of a state of the selected content item when the selection was received in the social networking system;

retrieving location information associated with the user by the social networking system;

determining whether the location information associated with the user is within a threshold distance of a location associated with the saved selected content item; and

responsive to determining the location information associated with the user is within the threshold distance of the location associated with the saved selected content item, presenting the saved selected content item to the user.

14. The computer-implemented method of claim 13, wherein presenting the saved selected content item comprises:

including the stored selected content item in the newsfeed based on a time more recent than a time associated with the selected stored content item when it was initially presented.

15. The computer-implemented method of claim 13, wherein presenting the saved selected content item comprises:

transmitting a notification including the selected stored content item to the user.

16. The computer-implemented method of claim 13, further comprising:

presenting the saved selected content item to the user is subject to one or more privacy settings associated with the saved selected content item by an additional user associated with the saved selected content item.

17. The computer-implemented method of claim 16, wherein the one or more privacy settings are determined at a time when the saved selected content item is to be presented.

18. The computer-implemented method of claim 13, wherein presenting the saved selected content item comprises:

presenting the saved selected content item having the state of the saved selected content item when the selection was received; and

presenting modifications to the saved selected content item occurring after the saving, the modifications visually distinguished from the state of the saved selected content item when the selection was received.
