Abstract

A reaction system and method for removing heteroatoms from oxidized-heteroatom-containing hydrocarbon streams and products derived therefrom are disclosed. An oxidized-heteroatom-containing hydrocarbon feed is reacted in a reaction system thereby forming non-ionic hydrocarbon products. The products derived therefrom are useful as transportation fuels, lubricants, refinery intermediates, or refinery feeds.

Claims

1. A process for reducing a concentration of oxidized sulfur compounds from a mixture of hydrocarbons the oxidized sulfur compounds, the process comprising:

contacting the mixture of hydrocarbons and oxidized sulfur compounds with a caustic solution in the presence of a inorganic oxide, the contacting occurring under conditions effective to promote the conversion of oxidized heteroatom-rich hydrocarbons into SO_x compounds;

removing the SO_x compounds from the mixture of hydrocarbons;

recovering a hydrocarbon product having a reduced heteroatom concentration.

2. The process of claim 1, wherein the inorganic oxide is aluminum oxide.

3. The process of claim 1, wherein the inorganic oxide has a surface area in the range of 10 to 1000 m²/g.

4. The process of claim 1, wherein the inorganic oxide has a pore volume in the range of 0.1 to 5 ml/g.

5. The process of claim 1, wherein the mean particle size of the inorganic oxide 0.3-0.5 cm³/g.

6. The process of claim 1, wherein the mixture of hydrocarbons and oxidized sulfur compounds is being contacted at a temperature between 50 to 450°

C.

11. The process of claim 1, wherein the mixture of hydrocarbons includes one or more of crude oil, diesel, bitumen, gas oils, kerosene, lubricants or refinery intermediates.

12. The process of claim 11, wherein the crude oil is a light crude oil.

13. The process of claim 11, wherein the crude oil is a heavy crude oil.

17. The method of claim 1, wherein the caustic solution is selected from Li₂O, Na₂O, K₂O, Rb₂O, Cs₂O, Fr₂O, BeO MgO, CaO, SrO, BaO, LiOH, NaOH, KOH, RbOH, CsOH, FrOH, Be(OH)₂, Mg(OH)₂, Ca(OH)₂, Sr(OH)₂, Ba(OH)₂, mixtures thereof and molten mixtures thereof.

7. A process for reducing a concentration of oxidized heteroatom compounds from a mixture of hydrocarbons and the oxidized heteroatom compounds, the process comprising:

contacting the mixture of oxidized heteroatom compounds with a caustic solution supported on a metal oxide, the contacting occurring under conditions effective to promote the conversion of oxidized heteroatom-rich hydrocarbons into SO_x compounds;

removing the SO_x compounds from the mixture of hydrocarbons;

recovering a hydrocarbon product having a reduced heteroatom concentration.

8. The process of claim 7, wherein the mixture of hydrocarbons and oxidized sulfur compounds are being contacted at a temperature between 50 to 450°

C.

9. The process of claim 7, wherein the mixture of hydrocarbons and oxidized sulfur compounds are being contacted at a temperature between 200 to 450°

C.

10. The process of claim 7, wherein the mixture of hydrocarbons and oxidized sulfur compounds are being contacted at a temperature between 300 to 350°

C.

14. The process of claim 7, wherein the mixture of hydrocarbons includes one or more of crude oil, diesel, bitumen, gas oils, kerosene, lubricants or refinery intermediates.

15. The process of claim 14, wherein the crude oil is a light crude oil.

16. The process of claim 14, wherein the crude oil is a heavy crude oil.

18. The method of claim 7, wherein the caustic solution is selected from Li₂O, Na₂O, K₂O, Rb₂O, Cs₂O, Fr₂O, BeO MgO, CaO, SrO, BaO, LiOH, NaOH, KOH, RbOH, CsOH, FrOH, Be(OH)₂, Mg(OH)₂, Ca(OH)₂, Sr(OH)₂, Ba(OH)₂, mixtures thereof and molten mixtures thereof.
