Abstract

An electronic wristwatch operable in two power modes. The wristwatch has an inertial sensor for detecting a gesture on a cover glass of the wristwatch. A touch panel is provided underneath the cover glass for detecting the gesture. Gesture detection by the inertial sensor is combined with gesture detection by the touch panel for triggering a switch from a first power mode to a second power mode.

Claims

1. A method combining gesture detection by an accelerometer and gesture detection with a touch panel for switching a wristwatch from a first power mode to a second power mode, comprising:

using an accelerometer with embedded signal processing capabilities for generating an acceleration signal used for detecting a gesture on a cover glass of said wristwatch;

discriminating between gesture and no gesture based on the frequency of said acceleration signal, and/or the direction of said acceleration signal, and/or the slope of said acceleration signal as measured by said accelerometer being a three dimensional accelerometer,

waking up a microcontroller in said wristwatch upon detection of a gesture by said accelerometer,

using said microcontroller for detecting said gesture and for discriminating between gesture and no gesture based at least on signals from a touch panel underneath said cover glass.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the discrimination between gesture and no gesture is also based on the duration of said acceleration signal.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the discrimination between gesture and no gesture is also based on the amplitude of said acceleration signal.

4. The method of claim 1, said step of discriminating between gesture and no gesture comprises determining said frequency and determining that there is no gesture if said frequency is not in a predetermined frequency range compatible with a tap.

5. The method of claim 1, said step of discriminating between gesture and no gesture comprises determining said direction and determining that there is no gesture if said direction is not substantially perpendicular to said cover glass.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein said touch panel comprises a plurality of touch areas, said method comprising a step of applying a power supply sufficient for detecting a gesture to only a first subset of said touch areas.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein discrimination between gesture and no gesture depends on the duration between a detection signal from said accelerometer and a detection signal with said touch panel.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein said accelerometer is powered on when said wristwatch is in said first power mode, said method comprising a step of at partially waking up said touch panel upon detection of a gesture by said accelerometer.

10. The method of claim 7, comprising a step of waking up only a subset of the complete area of said touch panel upon detection of a gesture by said accelerometer.

11. The method of claim 1, comprising a step of waking up a microcontroller in said wristwatch upon detection of a gesture by said accelerometer and with said touch panel.

13. The method of claim 1, said gesture being a tap or a double tap.

14. The method of claim 1, further comprising a step of detecting a wristturn with said accelerometer, and switching said wristwatch from said first power mode to said second power mode when a wristturn has been detected.

19. The method of claim 14, said step of detecting a wristturn comprising:

detecting that the orientation of the wristwatch is in a first range;

detecting that the orientation of the wristwatch is then in a second range, different from said first range,

detecting that the wristwatch remains substantially immobile during a predetermined duration.

15. The method of claim 141, said step of detecting a wristturn comprising:

detecting that the orientation of the wristwatch is in a first range;

detecting that the orientation of the wristwatch is then in a second range, different from said first range,

detecting that the wristwatch remains substantially immobile during a predetermined duration.

16. A wristwatch which can be operated in a plurality of power modes including a first power mode and a second power mode, comprising:

a display;

a touch panel underneath a cover glass of said wristwatch for detecting a gesture on said cover glass;

an accelerometer with embedded signal processing capabilities, said accelerometer being arranged for generating an acceleration signal and for discriminating between gesture and no gesture based on the frequency of said acceleration signal, and/or the direction of said acceleration signal as measured by said accelerometer being a three dimensional accelerometer, and/or the slope of said acceleration signal,

a microcontroller commanded so as to be switched to said second power mode upon gesture detection by said accelerometer and for discriminating between gesture and no gesture based at least on signals from said touch panel.

17. The wristwatch of claim 16, wherein said touch panel comprises a plurality of touch areas and powering means arranged for powering only a first subset of said touch area upon detection of a gesture by said accelerometer, and for powering a larger subset in said second power mode.

18. A method for switching a wristwatch from a first power mode to a second power mode, comprising:

using an accelerometer for detecting a wristturn, and

switching said wristwatch from said first power mode to said second power mode when a wristturn has been detected.
