Abstract

A novel blood collection device is described to secure a needle in place in a placenta or umbilical cord to prevent needle stick before, during, and after cord blood collection procedure.

Claims

1. A blood collection device comprising:

a housing to secure an umbilical cord having a first curved sidewall with a first finger hold and a second curved sidewall with a second finger hold;

a hinging member for pivotally securing said first sidewall to said second sidewall; and

a needle access point disposed in the housing for needle insertion.

2. The blood collection device of claim 1, further comprising a needle access port for collecting a sample.

3. The blood collection device of claim 1, further comprising a needle safety element.

4. The blood collection device of claim 2, wherein the needle safety element comprises a retractable needle disposed in a chamber.

5. The blood collection device of claim 1 wherein the needle access point is angled relative to the housing.

6. The blood collection device of claim 1 wherein the needle access point is a connector port.

7. The blood collection device of claim 6, wherein a retractable needle is inserted into the connector port to access a placenta or umbilical cord.

8. The blood collection device of claim 7, wherein the retractable needle further comprises a reuse prevention element.

9. The blood collection device of claim 1 wherein the hinging member is a fixed hinge.

10. The blood collection device of claim 1, wherein the first sidewall is inwardly curved and includes a plurality of small protuberances to allow the first sidewall to be secured onto an umbilical cord.

11. The blood collection device of claim 1, wherein the second sidewall is inwardly curved and includes a plurality of small protuberances to allow the second sidewall to be secured onto an umbilical cord.

12. The blood collection device of claim 1, further comprising a first grasping finger disposed on the distal end of the first sidewall.

13. The blood collection device of claim 12, further comprising a second grasping finger disposed on the distal end of the second sidewall.

14. The blood collection device of claim 13, wherein the first grasping finger reciprocally engages the second grasping finger when in a closed position.

15. The blood collection device of claim 14, wherein a cavity is formed between the first grasping finger and the second grasping finger when in a closed position.

16. The blood collection device of claim 6, wherein the connector port is disposed at an angle relative to the housing.

17. The blood collection device of claim 1, further comprising a syringe having a slidable needle shield inserted into the needle access point to access a placenta or umbilical cord.

18. The blood collection device of claim 1 further comprising an integral clamp disposed in the housing to secure an umbilical cord into place.

19. The blood collection device of claim 1 further comprising a clamp disposed downstream from the needle access point to prevent blood loss from an umbilical cord.

20. The blood collection device of claim 1 further comprising a spring operatively associated with said hinging member for exerting a continual force about said hinging member whereby said first sidewall and second sidewall are urged to a closed position.

21. The blood collection device of claim 1 wherein a needle is integrally connected to the needle access point.

22. The blood collection device of claim 1, further comprising a blood access device or evacuated tube connected to the needle access point.

23. The blood collection device of claim 1, wherein the needle access point is adapted to accept a needle with its own integral safety element.

24. The blood collection device of claim 6 wherein the connector port is a Luer port.

25. A blood collection device comprising:

a housing to secure an umbilical cord having a first curved sidewall with a first finger hold and a second curved sidewall with a second finger hold;

a hinging member for pivotally securing said first sidewall to said second sidewall;

an integrated needle; and

a needle safety element.

26. The blood collection device of claim 25, wherein the needle safety element comprises a retractable needle disposed in a chamber integrally connected to a needle access port to access the contents of the needle.

27. The blood collection device of claim 25 wherein the hinging member is a fixed hinge.

28. The blood collection device of claim 25, wherein the first sidewall is inwardly curved and includes a plurality of small protuberances to allow the first sidewall to be secured onto an umbilical cord.

29. The blood collection device of claim 25, wherein the second sidewall is inwardly curved and includes a plurality of small protuberances to allow the second sidewall to be secured onto an umbilical cord.

30. The blood collection device of claim 25, further comprising a first grasping finger disposed on the distal end of the first sidewall.

31. The blood collection device of claim 30, further comprising a second grasping finger disposed on the distal end of the second sidewall.

32. The blood collection device of claim 31, wherein the first grasping finger reciprocally engages the second grasping finger when in a closed position.

33. The blood collection device of claim 31, wherein a cavity is formed between the first grasping finger and the second grasping finger when in a closed position.

34. The blood collection device of claim 25, wherein the integrated needle is disposed at an angle relative to the housing.

35. The blood collection device of claim 25, wherein the needle safety element is a slidable needle shield to cover the integrated needle.

36. The blood collection device of claim 25 further comprising an integral clamp disposed in the housing to secure an umbilical cord into place.

37. The blood collection device of claim 25 further comprising a clamp disposed downstream from the integrated needle to prevent blood loss from an umbilical cord.

38. The blood collection device of claim 25 further comprising a spring operatively associated with said hinging member for exerting a continual force about said hinging member whereby said first sidewall and second sidewall are urged to a closed position.

39. The blood collection device of claim 25 wherein a needle is integrally connected to a needle access port.

40. The blood collection device of claim 25, further comprising a blood access device or evacuated tube connected to the needle via a needle access point.
