Abstract

An alignment system for the muscular-skeletal system is disclosed. The system supports parameter measurement and alignment. The system comprises a sensored device, a reference position tool, and a remote system configured to receive and display sensor data. The sensored device includes a three-axis accelerometer configured to measure position, rotation, and slope. The reference position tool comprises a body, a first arm coupled to a proximal end of the body, and a second arms coupled to a proximal end of the body. The sensored device couples to the reference position tool. The first and second arms of the reference position tool couples to the muscular-skeletal system in predetermined locations to allow a position of the muscular-skeletal system to be referenced. The body of the reference position tool can extend and retract to adapt to different sized muscular-skeletal systems.

Claims

1. A muscular-skeletal alignment system comprising:

a sensored device including at least one 3-axis accelerometer for measuring position, rotation, and slope;

a remote system coupled to the device for receiving position, rotation, or slope data; and

a reference position tool configured to couple to the muscular-skeletal system in a predetermined position where the sensored device couples to the reference position tool and where the sensored device is configured to generate a reference corresponding to a position of the muscular-skeletal system.

2. The system of claim 1 where the reference position tool comprises a bio-compatible plastic.

3. The system of claim 1 further including arms extending from a body of the reference position tool configured to couple to the muscular-skeletal system.

4. The system of claim 3 where a first arm of the reference position tool is configured to couple to a region of the knee and a second arm is configured to couple to a region of the lower leg.

5. The system of claim 1 where the body of the reference position tool includes a clip and where the clip is configured to receive and retain the sensored device.

6. The system of claim 1 where the sensored device is a prosthetic component.

7. The system of claim 1 where the body of the reference position tool includes a slot configured to receive a tab extending from the sensored device.

8. The system of claim 1 where the system comprises a plurality of reference position tools each having a different length.

9. The system of claim 1 where a body of the reference position tool extends to more than one length.

10. The system of claim 1 where the sensored device includes load sensors to measure load and position of load.

11. A reference position tool for the muscular-skeletal system comprising:

a body;

a first arm coupled to the body;

a second arm coupled to the body where the first and second arms are configured to couple to predetermined regions of the muscular-skeletal system to generate a reference position and where the reference position tool is configured to receive a sensored prosthetic component, and where the sensored prosthetic component is configured to measure position, rotation, and slope to measure the reference position.

12. The tool of claim 11 where the body of the reference position tool can extend or retract to change a length of the body.

13. The tool of claim 11 where the first arm couples to a proximal end of the body and extends from the body and where the second arm couples to a distal end of the body and extends from the body in the same direction as the first arm.

14. The tool of claim 11 where the body includes a clip configured to hold the sensored prosthetic component in a predetermined position.

15. The tool of claim 11 where more than one reference position tool is provided each having a different body length.

16. The tool of claim 11 where the sensored prosthetic component is configured to measure load and position of load.

17. A method of generating a reference position comprising the steps of:

coupling a device having a three-axis accelerometer to a reference position tool;

placing a muscular-skeletal system in a predetermined position;

positioning the reference position tool to at least one muscular-skeletal landmark of the muscular-skeletal system;

aligning one plane of the device within a predetermined alignment range; and

measuring a position, rotation, or tilt of the reference position tool at the predetermined position.

18. The method of claim 17 further including a step of adjusting a length of a body of the reference position tool.

19. The method of claim 17 further including clipping the device to a body of the reference position tool.

20. The method of claim 17 further including a step of contacting the muscular-skeletal system with a first and second arm of the reference position tool where the first and second arms extend from a body of the reference position tool.
