Abstract

An item display method and apparatus that provides an easier and faster way to locate a desired item on a display. The method and apparatus receive a user gesture on display screen, and display one or both of items of a first category and items of a second category according to the user gesture. Items of the first category and items of the second category are displayed in various ways according to associated user gestures.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

displaying on a display unit an item of a first category and an indicator associated with the first category;

in response to a processor detecting a scroll gesture on a screen of the display unit, transitioning from display of an item of the first category to display of an item of a second category when the item displayed from the first category is a last item of the first category,

wherein the indicator indicates a position of the displayed item within the respective category.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the indicator changes when the display unit transitions from display of the item of the first category to display of the item of the second category.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein a direction of the scroll gesture corresponds to a displayed direction of the transition from displaying the item from the first category to displaying the item from the second category.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the processor controls the transition the display of the item from the first category to the display of the item from the second category when the first category has no additional items available for display.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein each respective scroll gesture of a plurality of scroll gestures detected by the processor scrolls the display to other items within the first category, and transitions the display to the item of the second category when another scroll gesture is detected after a last item in the first category is displayed.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the processor causes the display unit to transition from display of the item of the first category to the item of the second category without detecting a selection for category transition.

7. An electronic device comprising:

a display unit;

an input unit; and

a processor configured to control the display unit to display an item of a first category and an indicator associated with the first category, control the input unit to detect a scroll gesture on a screen of the display unit, and in response to a scroll gesture, transitioning from display of an item of the first category to display of an item of a second category when the item displayed from the first category is a last item of the first category,

wherein the indicator indicates a position of the displayed item within the respective category.

8. The electronic device of claim 7, wherein the indicator changes when the display transitions from display of the item of the first category to display of the item of the second category.

9. The electronic device of claim 7, wherein a direction of the scroll gesture corresponds to a displayed direction of the transition from displaying the item from the first category to displaying the item from the second category.

10. The electronic device of claim 7, wherein the processor controls the transition the display of the item from the first category to the display of the item from the second category when the first category has no additional items available for display.

11. The electronic device of claim 7, wherein each respective scroll gesture of a plurality of scroll gestures detected by the processor scrolls the display to other items within the first category, and transitions the display to the item of the second category when another scroll gesture is detected after a last item in the first category is displayed.

12. The electronic device of claim 7, wherein the processor causes the display unit to transition from display of the item of the first category to the item of the second category without detecting a selection for category transition.

13. A method comprising:

displaying, on a touch screen, at least one item of a first category and an indicator associated with the first category;

receiving by a processor a scroll gesture on the touch screen; and

in response to the scroll gesture, displaying at least one item of a second category immediately subsequent to displaying a last item of the first category,

wherein the indicator indicates a position of the displayed item within the respective category.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the processor controls transition of the display of the at least one item from the first category to the at least one item of the second category without detecting a selection for category transition.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein the processor controls the transition of the display of the at least one item from the first category to the display of the at least one item from the second category when the first category has no additional items available for display.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein the indicator changes when the display unit transitions from display of the item of the first category to display of the item of the second category.

17. An electronic device comprising:

a touch screen; and

processor configured to control the touch screen to display at least one item of a first category and an indicator associated with the first category and to receive a scroll gesture, and in response to the scroll gesture, to display at least one item of a second category immediately subsequent to displaying a last item of the first category,

wherein the indicator indicates a position of the displayed item within the respective category.

18. The electronic device of claim 17, wherein the processor controls transition of the display of the at least one item from the first category to the at least one item of the second category without detecting a selection for category transition.

19. The electronic device of claim 17, wherein the processor controls the transition of the display of the at least one item from the first category to the display of the at least one item from the second category when the first category has no additional items available for display.

20. The electronic device of claim 17, wherein the indicator changes when the display unit transitions from display of the item of the first category to display of the item of the second category.
