Abstract

A method is employed by an electronic device for managing power used by an associated accessory device attached to the electronic device. The method includes applying a current to the accessory device and in response to the applied current, at least one of first and second identifier resistances are identified in the accessory device. The method determines whether the accessory device is connected to a power supply in response to the at least one of identified first and second identifier resistances and applies power to the accessory device in response to a determination the accessory device is not connected to the power supply.

Claims

1. A method employed by an electronic device for managing power used by an associated accessory device attached to the electronic device, comprising:

applying a current to the accessory device;

in response to the applied current, identifying at least one of first and second identifier resistances in the accessory device;

determining whether the accessory device is connected to a power supply in response to the at least one of identified first and second identifier resistances; and

applying power to the accessory device in response to a determination the accessory device is not connected to the power supply.

2. The method of claim 1, comprising identifying that the accessory device is not connected to the power supply in response to identifying the first identifier resistance.

3. The method of claim 1, comprising identifying that the accessory device is connected to the power supply in response to identifying the second identifier resistance.

4. The method of claim 1, comprising applying power to the accessory device in response to determining that the accessory device is not connected to the power supply.

5. The method of claim 1, comprising determining not to apply power to the accessory device when it is determined that the accessory device is connected to the power supply.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising

identifying that power is applied to the accessory device.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

identifying that the accessory device operates using power from the power supply connected to the electronic device in response to determining not to apply power to the accessory device; and

identifying that power is applied from the accessory device.

8. A method employed by an accessory device attached to an electronic device, comprising:

selecting a first switch state in response to a determination of whether power is applied from a power supply device; and

using the first switch in the selected switch state for at least one of,

(a) operating functions of the accessory device using power received from the electronic device, and

(b) operating functions of the accessory device while applying power from the power supply device to the electronic device, in response to the determination of whether power is applied from the power supply device.

9. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

changing state of a second switch from open to closed in response to power being applied from the power supply device; and

identifying that the second switch is closed and a first identifier resistor and a second identifier resistor connected in parallel are connected to the electronic device.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

identifying that the second switch is open when power is not applied from the power supply device; and

identifying that the second switch is open and a first identifier resistor is connected to the electronic device.

11. The method of claim 8, comprising changing state of the first switch from open to closed in response to power being applied from the power supply device.

12. The method of claim 8, comprising identifying that the first switch is open when the power supply device is not providing power.

13. The method of claim 8, comprising operating functions of the accessory device while applying power from the power supply device to the electronic device when the first switch is closed.

14. The method of claim 8, comprising operating functions of the accessory device using power received from the electronic device when the first switch is open.

15. The method of claim 8, wherein the first switch is connected in parallel to a second switch.

16. An electronic device comprising:

a processor module for,

recognizing at least one of first and second identifier resistances by applying a current to an accessory device,

determining whether the accessory device is connected to a power supply in response to at least one recognized identifier resistance, and

determining whether to apply power to the accessory device in response to the determination of whether the accessory device is connected to a power supply; and

a memory for storing data used by the processor module.

17. The electronic device of claim 16, wherein the processor module identifies that the accessory device is not connected to the power supply in response to identifying the first identifier resistance.

18. The electronic device of claim 16, wherein the processor module identifies that the accessory device is connected to the power supply in response to identifying the second identifier resistance.

19. The electronic device of claim 16, wherein the processor module initiates applying power to the accessory device in response to determining the accessory device is not connected to the power supply.

20. The electronic device of claim 16, wherein the processor module does not apply power to the accessory device in response to determining the accessory device is connected to the power supply.

21. The electronic device of claim 16, wherein the processor module applies power to the accessory device and identifies that power is applied to the accessory device.

22. The electronic device of claim 16, wherein the processor module identifies that the accessory device operates using power provided by the power supply connected to the electronic device.

23. An accessory device attached to an electronic device, the accessory device comprising:

a control unit for,

selecting a first switch state in response to a determination of whether power is applied from a power supply device and

identifying at least one of,

(a) the accessory device operates by receiving power from an electronic device, and

(b) the accessory device operates while applying power from the power supply device to the electronic device, in response to the selected first switch state; and

a storage unit for storing data used by the control unit.

24. The accessory device of claim 23, wherein the control unit changes state of a second switch from closed to open when the power from the power supply device is applied and identifies parallel first and second identifier resistors are connected to the electronic device.

25. The accessory device of claim 23, wherein the control unit identifies that a second switch is open when the power supply device is not applying power to the accessory device and identifies that a first identifier resistor is connected to the electronic device.

26. The accessory device of claim 23, wherein the control unit identifies that the first switch changes state from open to closed when power is applied from the power supply device.

27. The accessory device of claim 23, wherein the control unit identifies that the first switch is open when the power supply device is not supplying power to the accessory device.

28. The accessory device of claim 23, wherein the control unit identifies that the accessory device operates while applying power from the power supply device to the electronic device when the first switch is closed.

29. The accessory device of claim 23, wherein the control unit identifies that the accessory device operates by receiving power from the electronic device when the first switch is open.

30. The accessory device of claim 23, wherein the first switch is connected in parallel with a second switch.
