Abstract

A method for determining a property of an insurance policy includes receiving driving data for a vehicle based on sensor data from one or more sensors external to the vehicle. The driving data includes identification data for one or more of the vehicle and a driver of the vehicle. The method includes determining risk data associated with one or more of the vehicle and the driver based on the driving data. The method further includes automatically determining a property of an insurance policy associated with one or more of the vehicle and the driver based on the risk data.

Claims

1. A computer readable storage medium comprising program code for causing one or more processors to perform a method, the method comprising:

receiving driving data for a vehicle based on sensor data from one or more sensors external to the vehicle, the driving data comprising identification data for one or more of the vehicle and a driver of the vehicle;

determining risk data associated with one or more of the vehicle and the driver based on the driving data; and

automatically determining a property of an insurance policy associated with one or more of the vehicle and the driver based on the risk data.

2. The computer readable storage medium of claim 1, wherein receiving the driving data comprises receiving the driving data from a traffic monitoring system comprising the one or more sensors.

6. The computer readable storage medium of claim 1, wherein the traffic monitoring system is operated by a driving data clearing house entity.

9. The computer readable storage medium of claim 6, wherein the driving data clearing house entity receives and processes the sensor data from the one or more sensors to determine driving data for access by an insurance entity.

13. The computer readable storage medium of claim 1, wherein receiving the driving data comprises receiving the driving data in real-time.

42. The computer readable storage medium of claim 1, wherein receiving the driving data comprises receiving the driving data comprising at least a portion of the sensor data.

46. The computer readable storage medium of claim 42, wherein receiving the driving data comprises receiving the sensor data comprising location data.

63. The computer readable storage medium of claim 1, wherein the driving data comprise information regarding a driving event.

64. The computer readable storage medium of claim 63, wherein the driving event comprises an event that affects an insurance risk for one or more of the driver and the vehicle.

66. The computer readable storage medium of claim 63, wherein the information regarding the driving event comprises information regarding an occurrence of the vehicle exceeding a speed limit.

67. The computer readable storage medium of claim 63, wherein the information regarding the driving event comprises information regarding an occurrence of the vehicle violating a traffic signal.

76. The computer readable storage medium of claim 1, wherein the driving data comprise information regarding roadway conditions.

90. The computer readable storage medium of claim 1, wherein the driving data comprise evidence of one or more of an occurrence of a driving event, roadway conditions, traffic conditions, and a driving route.

91. The computer readable storage medium of claim 90, wherein the evidence comprises sensor data of the vehicle during the occurrence of the driving event.

93. The computer readable storage medium of claim 90, wherein the evidence comprises the identification data.

108. The computer readable storage medium of claim 1, further comprising identifying one of the vehicle and the driver based on the identification data.

109. The computer readable storage medium of claim 108, wherein identifying comprises identifying the vehicle based on a license plate of the vehicle.

115. The computer readable storage medium of claim 108, wherein identifying comprises identifying the driver based on facial recognition.

118. The computer readable storage medium of claim 1, wherein determining the risk data comprises determining a risk score for one or more of the vehicle and the driver.

120. The computer readable storage medium of claim 118, wherein determining the risk score comprises determining the risk score based on one or more of a driving event, a roadway condition, a driving route, and a traffic condition reflected by the driving data.

121. The computer readable storage medium of claim 118, further comprising logging one or more of a driving event, a roadway condition, a driving route, and a traffic condition reflected by the driving data in a driving log corresponding to one of the vehicle and the driver.

122. The computer readable storage medium of claim 121, wherein determining the risk score comprises determining the risk score based on the driving log.

128. The computer readable storage medium of claim 1, wherein determining the risk data comprises searching historical driving data for data involving one or more of the vehicle and the driver.

129. The computer readable storage medium of claim 1, wherein determining the risk data comprises determining the risk data periodically on a risk data update interval.

140. The computer readable storage medium of claim 1, wherein automatically determining the insurance property comprises determining an insurance property that defines coverage of the insurance policy based on how much the vehicle is driven.

141. The computer readable storage medium of claim 1, wherein automatically determining the insurance property comprises determining an insurance property that defines a cost of the insurance policy.

142. The computer readable storage medium of claim 141, wherein the insurance property comprises an insurance premium.

147. The computer readable storage medium of claim 1, wherein determining the insurance property comprises determining the insurance property in response to determining the risk data.

148. The computer readable storage medium of claim 147, wherein determining the insurance property comprises determining the insurance property in real-time.

157. The computer readable storage medium of claim 1, wherein the insurance policy comprises a vehicle insurance policy.

160. The computer readable storage medium of claim 1, wherein the insurance policy comprises a health insurance policy of one or more of an owner of the vehicle, the driver, and a passenger of the vehicle.

a sensor data component configured to receive sensor data from one or more sensors external to a vehicle;

a driving data component configured to generate driving data for the vehicle based on sensor data, the driving data comprising identification data for one or more of the vehicle and a driver of the vehicle;

an identification component configured to determine, based on the identification data, an insurance provider that provides an insurance policy corresponding to one of the vehicle and the driver; and

a routing component configured to provide the driving data to the insurance provider, wherein the insurance provider determines a property of the insurance policy based on the driving data.

177. The system of claim 166, wherein the one or more sensors comprise at least one sensor mounted at a fixed position.

178. The system of claim 166, wherein the one or more sensors comprise at least one sensor positioned to observe a roadway.

187. The system of claim 166, wherein the one or more sensors comprise a camera.

188. The system of claim 187, wherein the camera comprises a video camera.

212. The system of claim 166, wherein the sensor data comprise velocity data.

223. The system of claim 166, wherein the driving data component generates driving data comprising information regarding a driving event involving the vehicle.

236. The system of claim 223, wherein the driving data component further detects an occurrence of a driving event based on the sensor data.

240. The system of claim 236, wherein the driving data comprise sensor data of the vehicle during the driving event, and wherein the sensor data comprise an image of the vehicle.

249. The system of claim 166, wherein the driving data component generates driving data comprising information regarding traffic conditions.

253. The system of claim 166, wherein the driving data component generates driving data comprising information regarding a driving route of the vehicle.

283. The system of claim 166, wherein the identification component is further configured to determine whether the identification data corresponds to a high risk driver.

284. The system of claim 283, wherein the routing component provides the driving data to the insurance provider in response to the identification component determining that the identification data corresponds to the high risk driver.

285. The system of claim 283, wherein the system discards driving data for the vehicle in response to the identification component determining that the identification data does not correspond to the high risk driver.
