Abstract

Providing a registry of sensor devices may comprise obtaining a device, determining one or more information types returned by the device, determining one or more communication protocols used by the device for transmitting information, determining one or more encoding schemes used by the device to format the information, adding the device to the registry of sensor devices including at least the one or more information types, the one or more communication protocols and the one or more encoding schemes, and allowing access to the registry of sensor devices.

Claims

1. A computer readable storage medium storing a program of instructions executable by a machine to perform a method of providing a registry of sensor devices, the method comprising:

obtaining a device;

determining one or more information types returned by the device;

determining one or more communication protocols used by the device for transmitting information;

determining one or more encoding schemes used by the device to format the information;

adding the device to the registry of sensor devices including at least the one or more information types, the one or more communication protocols and the one or more encoding schemes; and

allowing access to the registry of sensor devices.

2. The computer readable storage medium of claim 1, further comprising providing an application programming interface for interfacing with the registry of sensor device for the information.

3. The computer readable storage medium of claim 1, wherein the method is performed for a plurality of heterogeneous devices.

4. The computer readable storage medium of claim 1, wherein the allowing access comprises:

receiving a request from a requestor for one or more devices that provide a specified type of information;

determining a list of devices in the registry of sensors that provide the specified type of information; and

returning the list of devices to the requestor.

5. The computer readable storage medium of claim 4, wherein the returning further comprises returning the list of devices with at least one or more communication protocols and one or more encoding schemes associated with each of the devices in the list.

The computer readable storage medium of claim 4, wherein the request further comprises one or more constraints associated with the one or more devices requested, and the determining the list of devices in the registry of sensors further comprises selecting one or more devices in the registry that satisfy the one or more constraints.

The computer readable storage medium of claim 6, wherein the one or more constraints comprise one or more location constraints, and the list of devices in the registry of sensors are queried in real-time to determine current location of each of the devices to determine one or more devices that satisfy the one or more location constraints.

8. The computer readable storage medium of claim 1, further comprising:

transmitting a request for information to one or more devices in the registry of sensors;

receiving the information measured by the one or more devices;

updating reliability factor associated with the one or more devices based on the received information from the one or more devices.

9. A system for providing a registry of sensor devices, comprising:

a processor;

a database comprising the registry of sensor devices;

a sensor registry server module operable execute on the processor and further operable to obtain a device, determine one or more information types returned by the device, determine one or more communication protocols used by the device for transmitting information, determine one or more encoding schemes used by the device to format the information, and add the device to the registry of sensor devices including at least the one or more information types, the one or more communication protocols and the one or more encoding schemes; and

an application programming interface that allows access to the registry of sensor devices.

The system of claim 9, wherein the sensor registry server module receives a request from a requestor for one or more devices that provide a specified type of information, determines a list of devices in the registry of sensors that provide the specified type of information, and returns the list of devices to the requestor.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein the sensor registry server module returns the list of devices with at least one or more communication protocols and one or more encoding schemes associated with each of the devices in the list.

12. The system of claim 9, wherein the sensor registry server module further updates a reliability factor associated with the device in the registry of sensor devices by an iterative inference algorithm.
