Abstract

A method for managing power in a receiver to wirelessly receive the power from a transmitter, the method includes receiving AC power from the transmitter, rectifying the received AC power to DC power, managing power to be transferred to a load based on the rectified DC power, wherein the receiver generates a control signal in order to adjust the power transferred to the load based on the rectified DC power and transmits the control signal to the transmitter.

Claims

1. A method for managing power in a receiver to wirelessly receive the power from a transmitter, the method comprising:

receiving AC power from the transmitter;

rectifying the received AC power to DC power; and

managing power to be transferred to a load based on the rectified DC power,

wherein the receiver generates a control signal in order to adjust the power transferred to the load based on the rectified DC power and transmits the control signal to the transmitter.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the managing power to be transferred to the load includes supplying a DC voltage required by the load with the rectified DC power.

The method of claim 1, wherein the managing power to be transferred to the load includes transmitting the control signal to the transmitter to increase the power transferred to the load if the rectified DC power is less than a first threshold value, and the first threshold value is a minimum power required to normally operate the receiver.

The method of claim 1, wherein the managing power to be transferred to the load includes transmitting the control signal to the transmitter to decrease the power transferred to the load if the rectified DC power is equal to or greater than a first threshold value, and the first threshold value is a maximum power required to normally operate the receiver.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the managing power to be transferred to the load includes inhibiting the load from being damaged by reducing the power transferred to the load if the rectified DC power is equal to or greater than a second threshold value, and

wherein the second threshold value is greater than the first threshold value.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the managing power to be transferred to the load includes inhibiting the load from being damaged by using a switch which maintains or shuts off the power transferred to the load.

The method of claim 6, wherein the managing power to be transferred to the load includes shorting the switch such that the power transferred to the load is maintained if the rectified DC power is less than the second threshold value and opening the switch such that the power transferred to the load is shut off if the rectified DC power is equal to or greater than the second threshold value.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the receiving AC power includes receiving the AC power from the transmitter using resonant coupling.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the receiver transmits the control signal including a state information of the receiver by detecting a variation of the rectified DC power, and the state information of the receiver includes information related to present charging.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the receiver transmits the control signal to the transmitter through out-of-band communication.

11. A method for managing power in a transmitter to wirelessly transmit the power to a receiver, the method comprising:

transmitting AC power to the receiver using a transmission resonant coil;

receiving a control signal from the receiver; and

adjusting the AC power to transmit to the receiver based on the received control signal,

wherein the control signal is generated by the transmitter based on a rectified DC power transferred a load of the receiver.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the transmitter decreases the AC power if the rectified DC power is equal to or greater than a first threshold value based on the control signal and the first threshold value is a maximum power required to normally operate the receiver.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the transmitter increases the AC power if the rectified DC power is less than a first threshold value based on the control signal and the first threshold value is a minimum power required to normally operate the receiver.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein the transmitter inhibits an over voltage from being applied to the load if the rectified DC power is equal to or greater than a second threshold value based on the control signal and the second threshold value is maximum voltage to inhibit the load from being damaged.

15. The method of claim 11, wherein the control signal includes state information for detecting a variation of the rectified DC power in the receiver.

16. The method of claim 14, wherein the state information further includes at least one of information related to present charging quantity and information related to a change of charge quantity.

17. The method of claim 11, further comprising transmitting state information of the transmitter to the receiver, and

wherein the state information of the transmitter includes at least one of information related to a maximum amount of power to be supplied by the transmitter and information for a number of receivers that can be supported by the transmitter.

18. The method of claim 11, wherein the transmitter receives the control signal from the transmitter through out-of-band communication.
