Abstract

A technique for generating component usage statistics involves associating components with blocks of a stream-enabled application. When the streaming application is executed, block requests may be logged by Block ID in a log. The frequency of component use may be estimated by analyzing the block request log with the block associations.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

generating a feature association that associates a component of a stream-enabled application with a block of the stream-enabled application;

virtually installing the stream-enabled application in at least one session;

receiving a log of requests for blocks of the stream-enabled application intercepted by a virtual environment in the at least one session, wherein one or more of the requests in the log of requests are for the block;

generating a component statistic for the component comprising a frequency of usage of the component in relation to the one or more requests in the log for the block of the stream-enabled application, the frequency depending on the association of the component with the one or more requests received in the at least one session;

providing the component statistic.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising identifying a file offset as a beginning of the component.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising associating the component with one or more additional blocks, wherein a file of the stream-enabled application including the component has been broken into multiple blocks.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

associating one or more additional components of the stream-enabled application with the block of the stream-enabled application;

generating component statistics for the one or more additional components comprising frequencies of usage of the one or more additional components in relation to the one or more requests in the log for the block of the stream-enabled application, the frequencies of usage depending on the association of the one or more additional components with the one or more requests received in the at least one session;

providing the component statistics.

The method of claim 1, wherein the feature association includes a function of the component in executing the stream-enabled application, the feature association and the component statistic for the component used to estimate a frequency of usage of the function in executing the stream-enabled application.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving demographics data;

using the demographics data and the component statistics to estimate a frequency of usage of the component within a demographic.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising using the component statistic of the component to generate a report of the usage of a plurality of components used in executing the stream-enabled application in the at least one session, the plurality of components including the component.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the report includes a percentage of a session of the at least one session in which the component is used in executing the stream-enabled application.

9. The method of claim 7, further comprising:

receiving report preferences;

generating the report of the usage of the plurality of components according to the report preferences.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the log of requests is formatted to include at least one session ID of the at least one session and a block ID of the block of the stream-enabled application.

11. A system, comprising:

a compilation tool configured to generate a feature association that associates a component of a stream-enabled application with a block of the stream-enabled application;

a streaming software system configured to virtually install the stream-enabled application in at least one session;

a component statistics engine configured to;

receive a log of requests for blocks of the stream-enabled application intercepted by a virtual environment in the at least one session, wherein one or more of the requests in the log of requests are for the block;

generate a component statistic for the component comprising a frequency of usage of the component in relation to the one or more requests in the log for the block of the stream-enabled application, the frequency depending on the association of the component with the one or more requests received in the at least one session; and

provide the component statistic.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the compilation tool is further configured to indentify a file offset as a beginning of the component.

13. The system of claim 11, wherein the compilation tool is further configured to associate the component with one or more additional blocks, wherein a file of the stream-enabled application including the component has been broken into multiple blocks.

14. The system of claim 11, wherein:

the compilation tool is further configured to associate one or more additional components of the stream-enabled application with the block of the stream-enabled application;

the component statistics engine is further configured to;

generate component statistics for the one or more additional components comprising frequencies of usage of the one or more additional components in relation to the one or more requests in the log for the block of the stream-enabled application, the frequencies of usage depending on the association of the one or more additional components with the one or more requests received in the at least one session;

provide the component statistics.

The system of claim 11, wherein the feature association includes a function of the component in executing the stream-enabled application, the feature association and the component statistic for the component used by the component statistics engine to estimate a frequency of usage of the function in executing the stream-enabled application.

16. The system of claim 11, further comprising a demographics module configured to:

receive demographics data;

use the demographics data and the component statistics to estimate a frequency of usage of the component within a demographic.

The system of claim 11, further comprising a report generation module configured to use the component statistic of the component to generate a report of the usage of a plurality of components used in executing the stream-enabled application in the at least one session, the plurality of components including the component.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein the report includes a percentage of a session of the at least one session in which the component is used in executing the stream-enabled application.

19. The system of claim 17, wherein the report generation module is further configured to:

receive report preferences;

generate the report of the usage of the plurality of components according to the report preferences.

20. A system comprising:

means for generating a feature association that associates a component of a stream-enabled application with a block of the stream-enabled application;

means for virtually installing the stream-enabled application in at least one session;

means for receiving a log of requests for blocks of the stream-enabled application intercepted by a virtual environment in the at least one session, wherein one or more of the requests in the log of requests are for the block;

means for generating a component statistic for the component comprising a frequency of usage of the component in relation to the one or more requests in the log for the block of the stream-enabled application, the frequency depending on the association of the component with the one or more requests received in the at least one session;

means for providing the component statistic.
