Abstract

A mobile terminal including a wireless communication unit configured to wirelessly communicate with at least one other terminal; a sensing unit configured to sense tapping gestures; a memory configured to store a matching of a plurality of actions to perform with a plurality of tapping gestures; and a controller configured to display a first execution screen on a display unit corresponding to a first function executing on the mobile terminal, and perform a first action on the first function matched with a first type of tapping gestures and perform a second action different than the first action on the first function matched with a second type of tapping gestures.

Claims

1. A mobile terminal comprising:

a wireless communication unit configured to wirelessly communicate with at least one other terminal;

a touch screen configured to display a first screen including at least one object linked to a preset function, and sense a touch applied to the touch screen and a tapping gesture on the touch screen; and

a controller configured to;

execute the preset function, when the touch is applied on the object on the first screen, and

switch the touch screen from an active state in which illumination is applied to the touch screen to an inactivated state in which illumination is not applied to the touch screen, when the sensed tapping gesture corresponds to a first tap and a second tap consecutively applied to a region on the first screen on which the object is not displayed,

wherein the first screen is a home screen and the at least one object includes an icon, and

wherein the region on the first screen on which the object is not displayed is an empty space on the home screen that varies based on the location of the at least one object displayed on the first screen.

10. The mobile terminal of claim 1, wherein the controller is further configured to:

display a second screen on the touch screen,

determine whether the sensed tapping gesture corresponds to the first or second screens, and

switch the touch screen from the active state to the inactivated state when the sensed first and second taps are applied on the first screen or the second screen.

12. The mobile terminal of claim 1, wherein when the tapping gesture occurs on an object outside of the mobile terminal, the controller is further configured to mute sound output on the mobile terminal.

16. A method of controlling a mobile terminal, the method comprising:

displaying, via a touch screen of the mobile terminal, a first screen including at least one object linked to a preset function;

sensing, via the touch screen, a touch applied to the touch screen and a tapping gesture on the touch screen;

executing the preset function, when the touch is applied on the object on the first screen; and

switch the touch screen from an active state in which illumination is applied to the touch screen to an inactivated state in which illumination is not applied to the touch screen, when the sensed tapping gesture corresponds to a first tap and a second tap consecutively applied to a region on the first screen on which the object is not displayed,

wherein the first screen is a home screen and the at least one object includes an icon, and

wherein the region on the first screen on which the object is not displayed is an empty space on the home screen that varies based on the location of the at least one object displayed on the first screen.

21. The method of claim 16, further comprising:

displaying a second screen on the touch screen;

determining whether the sensed tapping gesture corresponds to the first or second screens; and

switching the touch screen from the active state to the inactivated state when the sensed first and second taps are applied on the first screen or the second screen.

22. The method of claim 16, wherein when the tapping gesture occurs on an object outside of the mobile terminal, the method further comprises muting sound output on the mobile terminal.
