Abstract

A method of improving the performance of an access network for coupling one or more user devices to an application server, said method comprising encoding, using one of one or more encoders, data using a network performance enhancing coding (NPEC); transmitting the encoded data; receiving the encoded data; decoding, using one of one or more decoders, the encoded data using said NPEC; and receiving the decoded data at either of said application server or said one or more user devices.

Claims

1. A method of improving the performance of an access network for coupling one or more user devices to an application server, said method comprising

encoding, using one of one or more encoders, data using a network performance enhancing coding (NPEC);

transmitting the encoded data;

receiving the encoded data;

decoding, using one of one or more decoders, the encoded data using said NPEC; and

receiving the decoded data at either of said application server or said one or more user devices.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of said one or more encoders or said one or more decoders is located at one or more proxy servers;

one or more paths couple said one or more user devices to said one or more proxy servers.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein at least one of said one or more paths are selected based on at least one of one or more factors.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein at least one of said one or more proxy servers are selected based on at least one of one or more factors.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein at least one of said one or more paths are encrypted.

6. The method of claim 2, wherein at least one of said one or more paths are secured.

7. The method of claim 3, wherein said transmitting of encoded data occurs over all of the one or more paths.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of said one or more encoders or one of said one or more decoders is located at at least one of said one or more user devices.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein each of the one or more paths is used to transmit a corresponding proportion;

and

wherein the corresponding proportion is set based on at least one of said one or more factors.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein all of the one or more paths are permanently kept alive.

11. A system for improving the performance of an access network for coupling one or more user devices to an application server, said system comprising

one or more encoders to

encode data using a network performance enhancing coding (NPEC), and

transmit the encoded data;

and

one or more decoders to

receive said encoded data,

decode the received data using said NPEC, and

said decoded data received at either one of said application server or said one or more user devices.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein either of said one or more encoders or said one or more decoders is located at one or more proxy servers;

and

one or more paths couple said one or more user devices to said one or more proxy servers.

13. The system of claim 12 wherein at least one of said one or more paths are selected based on at least one of one or more factors.

14. The system of claim 12, wherein at least one of said one or more proxy servers are selected based on at least one of one or more factors.

15. The system of claim 12, wherein at least one of said one or more paths are encrypted.

16. The system of claim 12, wherein at least one of said one or more paths are secured.

17. The system of claim 13, wherein said transmitting of encoded data occurs over all of the one or more paths.

18. The system of claim 11, wherein at least one of said one or more encoders or said one or more decoders is located at at least one of said one or more user devices.

19. The system of claim 17, wherein each of the one or more paths is used to transmit a corresponding proportion;

and

wherein the corresponding proportion is set based on at least one of said one or more factors.

20. The system of claim 17, wherein all of the one or more paths are permanently kept alive.
