Abstract

Techniques to increase engagement with a social networking system. In one embodiment, an engagement level of a user with a social networking system is monitored. A low engagement user type associated with the user is identified from a plurality of low engagement user types. It is determined whether the engagement level of the user is less than a threshold. If so, a communication is provided for the user based on the low engagement user type associated with the user. The communication may be a notification or a digest communication.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

monitoring an engagement level of an online system user, the engagement level of the online system user based on a measure of interaction of the online system user in the online system;

determining, by a processor, whether a user account on the online system associated the online system user is a low activity account based at least in part on the engagement level of the online system user; and

based at least in part on a determination that the user account is a low activity account;

selecting one or more stories about activities associated with one or more additional online system users, the one or more additional online system users having a connection with the online system user within the online system,

generating a communication that comprises the selected stories, and

sending the generated communication to the online system user using a communication channel external to the online system.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising identifying, from a plurality of categories of low activity account types, a category of low activity account type based at least in part on the engagement level of the user, each category of the plurality of categories of low activity account types defined based on one or more types of interactions with the online system by an online system user.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising selecting one or more stories about activities associated with one or more additional online system users based at least in part on the identified category of low activity account type associated with the online system user.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the engagement level of the online system user is based on a predetermined time between logins of the online system user.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the engagement level of the online system user is based on a predetermined amount of content shared by the online system user over a time period.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the engagement level of the online system user is based on a predetermined amount of feedback received by the online system user in response to content shared by the online system user over a first time period.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the engagement level of the online system user is further based on a predetermined amount of content shared by the online system user over a second time period.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the first time period is not equal to the second time period.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the engagement level of the online system user is based on a predetermined number of friends of the online system user.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the engagement level of the online system user is based on a predetermined time after an account of the online system user is created.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the communication includes a digest of activities performed by friends of the online system user.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the communication includes a notification about occurrence of an event.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the communication indicates that another online system user likes content shared by the online system user.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the communication indicates that another online system user likes content in which the online system user has been tagged.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein the communication includes an identification of potential friends for the online system user.

16. The method of claim 1, further comprising continuously determining whether a user account on the online system associated the online system user is a low activity account based at least in part on the engagement level of the online system user.

17. The method of claim 1, further comprising sending communications to the online system user while the user account on the online system associated with the online system user is determined to be a low activity account.

18. A non-transitory computer-storage medium storing computer-executable instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to:

monitor an engagement level of an online system user, the engagement level of the online system user based on a measure of interaction of the online system user in the online system;

determine, by a processor, whether a user account on the online system associated the online system user is a low activity account based at least in part on the engagement level of the online system user; and

based at least in part on a determination that the user account is a low activity account;

select one or more stories about activities associated with one or more additional online system users, the one or more additional online system users having a connection with the online system user within the online system,

generate a communication that comprises the selected stories, and

send the generated communication to the online system user using a communication channel external to the online system.

19. A system comprising:

at least one processor; and

a memory storing instructions configured to instruct the at least one processor to;

monitor an engagement level of an online system user, the engagement level of the online system user based on a measure of interaction of the online system user in the online system;

determine whether a user account on the online system associated the online system user is a low activity account based at least in part on the engagement level of the online system user; and

based at least in part on a determination that the user account is a low activity account;

select one or more stories about activities associated with one or more additional online system users, the one or more additional online system users having a connection with the online system user within the online system,

generate a communication that comprises the selected stories, and

send the generated communication to the online system user using a communication channel external to the online system.
