Abstract

A bulk material shipping container in one embodiment including a pallet, a bottom compartment mounted on the pallet, a top compartment mounted on the bottom compartment and movable from a retracted position relative to the bottom compartment to an expanded position relative to the bottom compartment, a plurality of top compartment supporting assemblies configured to support the top compartment in the expanded position relative to the bottom compartment, and configured to release the top compartment from the expanded position to enable the top compartment to move downwardly into the retracted position, a material unloading assembly, a material loading assembly, and an extension assembly.

Claims

1. A material shipping container comprising:

a pallet including a shelf;

a material unloading assembly supported by the pallet, the material unloading assembly including a plurality of spaced apart guide rails supported by the shelf and a slidable gate supported by the guide rails, the slidable gate movable from a closed position to an open position;

a compartment mounted on the pallet, the compartment including;

(a) a top wall,

(b) a W-shaped first corner section extending upwardly from the pallet,

(c) a W-shaped second corner section extending upwardly from the pallet,

(d) a W-shaped third corner section extending upwardly from the pallet,

(e) a W-shaped fourth corner section extending upwardly from the pallet,

(f) a plurality of wedge shaped interior bottom wall supports, and

(g) an interior bottom wall defined by a plurality of attached downwardly angled sections, the downwardly angled sections attached to and supported by;

(i) the first corner section,

(ii) the second corner section,

(iii) the third corner section,

(iv) the fourth corner section, and

(v) the plurality of wedge shaped interior bottom wall supports, each of the downwardly angled sections having a lower edge which at least partially forms a material release opening at a bottom of the compartment,

(h) a first nesting support positioned above the first corner section,

(i) a second nesting support positioned above the second corner section,

(j) a third nesting support positioned above the third corner section, and

(k) a fourth nesting support positioned above the fourth corner section, the nesting supports configured to at least partially support a pallet of another same material shipping container; and

a material loading assembly attached to the top wall of the compartment, the material loading assembly including a cover moveable from a closed position to an open position.

2. The material shipping container of claim 1, wherein each of the nesting supports includes a generally rectangular tubular section.

3. The material shipping container of claim 1, which includes a plurality of nesting guides, each nesting guide positioned adjacent to a different one of the nesting supports.

4. The material shipping container of claim 1, wherein:

(a) the W-shaped first corner section includes two connected sections, (b) the W-shaped second corner section includes two connected sections, (c) the W-shaped third corner section includes two connected sections, and (d) the W-shaped fourth corner section includes two connected sections.

5. The material shipping container of claim 1, wherein:

(a) the W-shaped first corner section includes two mating L-shaped sections, (b) the W-shaped second corner section includes two mating L-shaped sections, (c) the W-shaped third corner section includes two mating L-shaped sections, and (d) the W-shaped fourth corner section includes two mating L-shaped sections.

9. The material shipping container of claim 1, wherein:

(a) the front exterior wall, the first corner section of the front exterior wall, the first corner section of the first side exterior wall, and the first side exterior wall form a W-shaped first corner section,

(b) the front exterior wall, the second corner section of the front exterior wall, the first corner section of the second side exterior wall, and the second side exterior wall form a W-shaped second corner section,

(c) the back exterior wall, the first corner section of the back exterior wall, the second corner section of the first side exterior wall, and the first side exterior wall form a W-shaped third corner section, and

(b) the back exterior wall, the second corner section of the back exterior wall, the second corner section of the second side exterior wall, and the second side exterior wall form a W-shaped fourth corner section.

6. A material shipping container comprising:

a pallet including a shelf;

a material unloading assembly supported by the pallet, the material unloading assembly including shelf and a plurality of spaced apart guide rails supported by the shelf and a slidable gate supported by the guide rails, the slidable gate movable from a closed position to an open position;

a compartment mounted on the pallet, the compartment including;

(a) a top wall;

(b) a front exterior wall having an inwardly extending first corner section and an inwardly extending second corner section,

(c) a back exterior wall having an inwardly extending first corner section and an inwardly extending second corner section,

(d) a first side exterior wall having an inwardly extending first corner section and an inwardly extending second corner section, the first corner section of the first side exterior wall connected to the first corner section of the front exterior wall, the second corner section of the first side exterior wall connected to the first corner section of the back exterior wall,

(e) a second side exterior wall having an inwardly extending first corner section and an inwardly extending second corner section, the first corner section of the second side exterior wall connected to the second corner section of the front exterior wall, the second corner section of the second side exterior wall connected to the second corner section of the back exterior wall,

(f) a plurality of wedge shaped interior bottom wall supports,

(g) an interior bottom wall defined by a plurality of attached downwardly angled sections, the downwardly angled sections attached to and supported by;

(i) the front exterior wall,

(ii) the back exterior wall,

(iii) the first side exterior wall,

(iv) the second side exterior wall, and

(v) the plurality of wedge shaped interior bottom wall supports, each of the downwardly angled sections having a lower edge which at least partially forms a material release opening at a bottom of the compartment, and

(h) a plurality of nesting supports positioned above the corner sections and configured to at least partially support a pallet of another same material shipping container; and

a material loading assembly attached to the top wall of the compartment, the material loading assembly including a cover moveable from a closed position to an open position.

7. The material shipping container of claim 6, wherein each of the nesting supports includes a generally rectangular tubular section.

8. The material shipping container of claim 6, which includes a plurality of nesting guides, each nesting guide positioned adjacent to a different one of the nesting supports.

10. A material shipping container comprising:

a pallet including;

(i) a body,

(ii) a plurality of legs attached to the body and extending downwardly from the body, and

(iii) a footing attached to the legs, the footing having a footprint smaller than the body and the legs; and

a compartment mounted on the pallet, the compartment including;

(a) a top wall,

(b) a W-shaped first corner section extending upwardly from the pallet,

(c) a W-shaped second corner section extending upwardly from the pallet,

(d) a third corner section extending upwardly from the pallet,

(e) a fourth corner section extending upwardly from the pallet,

(f) a first tubular nesting support positioned above the first corner section,

(g) a second tubular nesting support positioned above the second corner section,

(h) a third tubular nesting support positioned above the third corner section,

(i) a fourth tubular nesting support positioned above the fourth corner section, the first, second, third, and fourth tubular nesting supports configured to at least partially support a pallet of another same material shipping container,

(j) a first nesting guide positioned above the first corner section and attached to the first tubular nesting support,

(k) a second nesting guide positioned above the second corner section and attached to the second tubular nesting support,

(l) a third nesting guide positioned above the third corner section and attached to the third tubular nesting support, and

(m) a fourth nesting guide positioned above the fourth corner section and attached to the fourth tubular nesting support.

11. The material shipping container of claim 10, which includes a bottom wall fixedly attached to the back exterior wall, the first exterior side wall, and the second exterior side wall.

12. The material shipping container of claim 10, wherein the third corner section is W-shaped, and the fourth corner section is W-shaped.

13. The material shipping container of claim 10, wherein:

(a) the W-shaped first corner section includes two connected sections, and (b) the W-shaped second corner section includes two connected sections.

14. The material shipping container of claim 10, wherein:

(a) the W-shaped first corner section includes two mating L-shaped sections, and (b) the W-shaped second corner section includes two mating L-shaped sections.

15. A material shipping container comprising:

a pallet including;

(i) a body,

(ii) a plurality of legs attached to the body and extending downwardly from the body, and

(iii) a footing attached to the legs, the footing having a footprint smaller than the body and the legs; and

a compartment mounted on the pallet, the compartment including;

(a) a top wall having first, second, third, and fourth corners,

(b) a front exterior wall,

(c) a back exterior wall having a first L-shaped corner section and a second L-shaped corner section,

(d) a first exterior side wall attached to the back exterior wall and having a third L-shaped corner section which mates with first L-shaped corner section,

(e) a second exterior side wall attached to the back exterior wall and having a fourth L-shaped corner section which mates with second L-shaped corner section,

(f) a first tubular nesting support positioned above the first corner,

(g) a second tubular nesting support positioned above the second corner,

(h) a third tubular nesting support positioned above the third corner,

(i) a fourth tubular nesting support positioned above the fourth corner, the first, second, third, and fourth tubular nesting supports configured to at least partially support a pallet of another same material shipping container,

(j) a first nesting guide positioned above the first corner and attached to the first tubular nesting support,

(k) a second nesting guide positioned above the second corner and attached to the second tubular nesting support,

(l) a third nesting guide positioned above the third corner and attached to the third tubular nesting support, and

(m) a fourth nesting guide positioned above the fourth corner and attached to the fourth tubular nesting support,

16. The material shipping container of claim 15, which includes a bottom wall attached to the back exterior wall, the first exterior side wall, and the second exterior side wall.

17. A material shipping container comprising:

a pallet;

a compartment mounted on the pallet, the compartment including;

(a) a top wall having first, second, third, and fourth corners,

(b) a front exterior wall,

(c) a back exterior wall,

(d) a first exterior side wall,

(e) a second exterior side wall,

(f) a plurality of wedge shaped interior bottom wall supports,

(g) an interior bottom wall defined by a plurality of attached downwardly angled sections, each of the downwardly angled sections having a lower edge which at least partially forms a material release opening at a bottom of the compartment, the downwardly angled sections attached to and supported by;

(i) the front exterior wall,

(ii) the back exterior wall,

(iii) the first exterior side wall,

(iv) the second exterior side wall, and

(v) the plurality of wedge shaped interior bottom wall supports,

(h) a first tubular nesting support positioned above the first corner,

(i) a second tubular nesting support positioned above the second corner,

(j) a third tubular nesting support positioned above the third corner,

(k) a fourth tubular nesting support positioned above the fourth corner, the first, second, third, and fourth tubular nesting supports configured to at least partially support a pallet of another same material shipping container;

a material unloading assembly positioned at a bottom of the compartment, the material unloading assembly including a slidable gate movable from a closed position to an open position; and

a material loading assembly attached to the top wall of the compartment, the material loading assembly including a cover hingedly attached to the top wall of the compartment and moveable from a closed position to an open position, wherein in the closed position, the cover engages a lip extending upwardly from the top wall of the compartment.

18. The material shipping container of claim 17, wherein each of the tubular nesting supports includes a generally rectangular tubular section.

19. The material shipping container of claim 17, wherein:

(a) the front exterior wall has a first corner section and a second corner section,

(b) the back exterior wall has a first corner section and a second corner section,

(c) the first side exterior wall has a first corner section and a second corner section, the first corner section of the first side exterior wall connected to the first corner section of the front exterior wall, the second corner section of the first side exterior wall connected to the first corner section of the back exterior wall, and

(d) the second side exterior wall has a first corner section and a second corner section, the first corner section of the second side exterior wall connected to the second corner section of the front exterior wall, the second corner section of the second side exterior wall connected to the second corner section of the back exterior wall.

20. The material shipping container of claim 17, wherein:

(a) the front exterior wall and the first side exterior wall form a W-shaped first corner section,

(b) the front exterior wall and the second side exterior wall form a W-shaped second corner section,

(c) the back exterior wall and the first side exterior wall form a W-shaped third corner section, and

(b) the back exterior wall and the second side exterior wall form a W-shaped fourth corner section.
