Abstract

A method for filtering a telephone call is provided. The method may comprise receiving from a caller the telephone call directed to a communication device associated with an intended call recipient. The received telephone call may be scored based on predetermined scoring criteria to create a score indicative of a desirability of the telephone call. Furthermore, the method may comprise comparing the score to a predetermined threshold score. Based on the comparison, the method may further comprise selectively classifying the telephone call as an unwanted telephone call. Furthermore, the method may comprise selectively rejecting the unwanted telephone call.

Claims

1. A method for generating a community black list comprising:

receiving, using a processor, an incoming telephone call directed to a recipient telephone number, the recipient phone number being associated with a telephone service, the recipient phone number being unassigned to a subscriber of the telephone service;

determining, using the processor, the incoming telephone call is from an originating telephone number;

answering, using the processor, the telephone call;

providing, using the processor, a verbal challenge;

receiving, using the processor, a response, the response being at least an audible answer;

measuring, using the processor, a time between when the verbal challenge is provided and when the response is received; and

adding the originating telephone number to the community blacklist based at least on one of the measured time being equal to or greater than a predetermined time and the audible answer corresponding to at least one predetermined answer.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the at least one predetermined answer includes “

hello.”

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

adding, using the processor, the originating telephone number to the community blacklist further based on at least one of time of day, day of week, and time of year.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

searching, using the processor, a plurality of subscriber blacklists for the originating telephone number; and

adding, using the processor, the originating telephone number to the community black list further based on the originating telephone number being in at least a predetermined number of the plurality of subscriber blacklists, the predetermined number being greater than or equal to two.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

searching, using the processor, at least a subset of a plurality of subscriber blacklists for the originating telephone number; and

adding, using the processor, the originating telephone number to the community black list further based on the originating telephone number being in at least one of the subset of the plurality of subscriber blacklists.

6. A method for generating a community black list comprising:

determining, using a processor, a first telephone call originates from an originating telephone number, the first telephone call directed to a first recipient telephone number;

determining, using the processor, a second telephone call originates from the originating telephone number, the second telephone call directed to a second recipient telephone number;

determining, using the processor, a third telephone call originates from the originating telephone number, the third telephone call directed to a third recipient telephone number; and

adding, using the processor, the originating telephone number to a black list, based at least on the determining the first telephone call, second telephone call, and third telephone call originate from the originating telephone number.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein determining the first telephone call, second telephone call, and third telephone call originate from the originating telephone number is based at least on one of a caller ID and a callback number.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein the first recipient telephone number, the second recipient telephone number, and the third recipient telephone number are each associated with a telephone service.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the first recipient telephone number, the second recipient telephone number, and the third recipient telephone number are at least one of sequential telephone numbers and unassigned telephone numbers.

10. The method of claim 9 further comprising:

receiving, using the processor, the first, second, and third telephone calls through the Internet.

11. The method of claim 10 further comprising:

determining, using the processor, a plurality of telephone calls originates from the originating telephone number; and

adding, using the processor, the originating telephone number to the black list further based on the plurality of telephone calls being greater than or equal to a predetermined proportion of all telephone numbers associated with the service provider.

12. The method of claim 11 further comprising:

adding, using the processor, the originating telephone number to the community blacklist further based on at least one of time of day, day of week, and time of year.

13. The method of claim 11 wherein the predetermined proportion is 0.0001.

14. A system for generating a community black list comprising:

a processor; and

a memory coupled to the processor, the memory storing instructions, the instructions being executable by the processor to perform a method comprising;

receiving an incoming telephone call directed to a recipient telephone number, the recipient phone number being associated with a telephone service, the recipient phone number being unassigned to a subscriber of the telephone service;

determining the incoming telephone call is from an originating telephone number;

answering the telephone call;

providing a verbal challenge;

receiving a response, the response being at least an audible answer;

measuring a time between when the verbal challenge is provided and when the response is received; and

adding the originating telephone number to the community blacklist based at least on one of the measured time being equal to or greater than a predetermined time and the audible answer corresponding to at least one predetermined answer.

15. The system of claim 14 wherein the at least one predetermined answer includes “

hello.”

16. The system of claim 14 wherein the method further comprises:

adding the originating telephone number to the community blacklist further based on at least one of time of day, day of week, and time of year.

17. The system of claim 14 wherein the method further comprises:

searching a plurality of subscriber blacklists for the originating telephone number; and

adding the originating telephone number to the community black list further based on the originating telephone number being in a predetermined number of the plurality of subscriber blacklists, the predetermined number being greater than or equal to two.

18. The system of claim 14 wherein the method further comprises:

searching at least a subset of a plurality of subscriber blacklists for the originating telephone number; and

adding the originating telephone number to the community black list further based on the originating telephone number being in at least one of the subset of the predetermined number of the plurality of subscriber blacklists.

19. A system for generating a community black list comprising:

a processor; and

a memory coupled to the processor, the memory storing instructions, the instructions being executable by the processor to perform a method comprising;

determining a first telephone call originates from an originating telephone number, the first telephone call directed to a first recipient telephone number;

determining, using the processor, a second telephone call originates from the originating telephone number, the second telephone call directed to a second recipient telephone number;

determining, using the processor, a third telephone call originates from the originating telephone number, the third telephone call directed to a third recipient telephone number; and

adding, using the processor, the originating telephone number to a black list, based at least on the determining the first telephone call, second telephone call, and third telephone call originate from the originating telephone number.

20. The system of claim 19 wherein determining the first telephone call, second telephone call, and third telephone call originate from the originating telephone number is based at least on one of a caller ID and a callback number.

21. The system of claim 20 wherein the first recipient telephone number, the second recipient telephone number, and the third recipient telephone number are each associated with a telephone service.

22. The system of claim 21 wherein the first recipient telephone number, the second recipient telephone number, and the third recipient telephone number are at least one of sequential telephone numbers and unassigned telephone numbers.

23. The system of claim 22 wherein the method further comprises:

receiving the first, second, and third telephone calls through the Internet.

24. The system of claim 23 wherein the method further comprises:

determining a plurality of telephone calls originates from the originating telephone number; and

adding the originating telephone number to the black list further based on the plurality of telephone calls being greater than or equal to a predetermined proportion of all telephone numbers associated with the service provider.

25. The system of claim 24 wherein the method further comprises:

adding the originating telephone number to the community blacklist further based on at least one of time of day, day of week, and time of year.

26. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having embodied thereon a program, the program being executable by a processor to perform a method for generating a community black list, the method comprising:

receiving an incoming telephone call directed to a recipient telephone number, the recipient phone number being associated with a telephone service, the recipient phone number being unassigned to a subscriber of the telephone service;

determining the incoming telephone call is from an originating telephone number;

answering the telephone call;

providing a verbal challenge;

receiving a response, the response being at least an audible answer;

measuring a time between when the verbal challenge is provided and when the response is received; and

adding the originating telephone number to the community blacklist based at least on one of the measured time being equal to or greater than a predetermined time and the audible answer corresponding to at least one predetermined answer.

27. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having embodied thereon a program, the program being executable by a processor to perform a method for generating a community black list, the method comprising:

determining a first telephone call originates from an originating telephone number, the first telephone call directed to a first recipient telephone number;

determining, using the processor, a second telephone call originates from the originating telephone number, the second telephone call directed to a second recipient telephone number;

determining, using the processor, a third telephone call originates from the originating telephone number, the third telephone call directed to a third recipient telephone number; and

adding, using the processor, the originating telephone number to a black list.
