Abstract

The present invention relates generally to systems and methods for measuring an analyte in a host. More particularly, the present invention relates to systems and methods for transcutaneous measurement of glucose in a host.

Claims

1. A method for monitoring glucose concentration in a biological sample of a host, the method comprising:

producing a data stream indicative of a glucose concentration of a host using a continuous glucose sensor;

prospectively converting, using a first processor, uncalibrated sensor data associated with the data stream to generate real-time calibrated glucose concentration information, the prospective conversion comprising applying the uncalibrated sensor data to a prospectively-generated conversion function;

retrospectively converting, using a second processor, the uncalibrated sensor data associated with the data stream to generate historical calibrated glucose concentration information, the retrospective conversion comprising applying the uncalibrated sensor data to a retrospectively-generated conversion function, wherein the prospectively-generated conversion function is different than the retrospectively-generated conversion function; and

displaying the historical calibrated glucose concentration information on a display device.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the continuous glucose sensor comprises a sensing region and a sensing membrane located over the sensing region, and wherein at least a portion of the continuous glucose sensor is transcutaneously inserted through a skin of the host.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising wirelessly transmitting and receiving data using a transceiver incorporated in sensor electronics of a first device coupled to the continuous glucose sensor.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the first processor is incorporated in the sensor electronics.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving, using a second device, the uncalibrated sensor data associated with the data stream from the first device.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the second processor is incorporated in the second device.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the first device is an on-skin device and the second device is a hand-held receiver.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the hand-held receiver is a cell phone.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising triggering a first alert responsive to the real-time calibrated glucose concentration information.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising triggering a second alert responsive to the historical calibrated glucose concentration information.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising downloading software onto a hand-held device via a communication port or a wireless receiver of the hand-held device, wherein the software comprises computer-readable instructions that, when executed by the second processor, perform the retrospective conversion and the displaying.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the retrospectively-generated conversion function is based on a change in sensitivity of the continuous glucose sensor not accounted for in the prospectively-generated conversion function.
