Abstract

An electronic device offers acquired location information to a point-of-interest (POI) management server when a predetermined condition is satisfied. The POI management server offers POI identification information to the electronic device when the location information is matched to one of registered POIs. When the POI identification information is received from the POI management server, the electronic device performs a certain action.

Claims

1. A method for providing a location based service for an electronic device, the method comprising:

acquiring location information of the electronic device;

transmitting the acquired location information to a point-of-interest (POI) management server when a predetermined condition is satisfied;

receiving POI identification information from the POI management server when the location information is matched to one of registered POIs; and

performing, by the electronic device, a certain action according to the POI identification information received from the POI management server.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the predetermined condition is one of transmitting the acquired location information with a predetermined time cycle, a change in the location information of the electronic device, or a lengthy stay more than a given time without a change in location.

The method of claim 2, wherein the change in the location information of the electronic device is one of a change in an identifier of a base station, in case a change in location information obtained from a GPS (Global Positioning System) is beyond a given range, or a change in location information obtained from an access point.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the information about the registered POI includes at least one POI registered for each electronic device, and one or more identifier information corresponding to the registered POI.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the identifier information includes one of an identifier of a base station, location information including a radius obtained from a GPS, or an identifier of an access point.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein the information about the registered POI further includes mapping information for triggering a specific action of the electronic device.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the POI identification information includes one of an identifier of a base station, location information including a radius obtained from a GPS, or an identifier of an access point.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

at the electronic device, checking mapping information for triggering a specific action when the POI identification information is received from the POI management server; and

at the electronic device, performing the specific matching action predefined according to the mapping information.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

at the electronic device, defining information about the POI and a specific action to be performed at the POI; and

at the electronic device, offering all or part of the defined information to the POI management server.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the information about the POI includes one of a POI address entered by a user, an identifier of a base station, location information including a radius obtained from a GPS, or an identifier of an access point.

11. An electronic device for providing a location based service for an electronic device, the electronic device comprising:

a communication module configured to acquire location information and to communicate with a point-of-interest (POI) management server;

a memory configured to store information on a registered POI therein; and

a processor configured to offer the acquired location information to the POI management server through the communication module when a predetermined condition is satisfied, and perform a specific matching action when POI identification information is received from the POI management server.

The electronic device of claim 11, wherein the predetermined condition is one of a predetermined time cycle for transmitting the acquired location information, a detection of a change in the location information of the electronic device, or a lengthy stay more than a given time without a change in location.

The electronic device of claim 12, wherein the detection of a change in the location information of the electronic device is one of a change in an identifier of a base station, in case a change in location information obtained from a Global Positioning System (GPS) is beyond a given range, or a change in location information obtained from an access point.

14. The electronic device of claim 11, wherein the information about the registered POI includes at least one POI registered for each electronic device, and one or more identifier information corresponding to the registered POI.

15. The electronic device of claim 14, wherein the identifier information includes one of an identifier of a base station, location information including a radius obtained from a GPS, or an identifier of an access point.

16. The electronic device of claim 14, wherein the information about the registered POI further includes mapping information for triggering a specific action of the electronic device.

17. The electronic device of claim 11, wherein the POI identification information includes one of an identifier of a base station, location information including a radius obtained from a GPS, or an identifier of an access point.

18. The electronic device of claim 11, wherein the processor is further configured to:

check mapping information for triggering a specific action when the POI identification information is received from the POI management server; and

perform the specific matching action predefined according to the mapping information.

19. The electronic device of claim 11, wherein the processor is further configured to:

define information about the POI and a specific action to be performed at the POI; and

offer all or part of the defined information to the POI management server.

20. The electronic device of claim 19, wherein the information about the POI includes one of a POI address entered by a user, an identifier of a base station, location information including a radius obtained from a GPS, or an identifier of an access point.

21. A system for providing a location based service for an electronic device, the system comprising:

the electronic device including;

a communication module configured to acquire location information and to communicate with a point-of-interest (POI) management server;

a memory configured to store information on a registered POI therein; and

a processor configured to offer the acquired location information to the POI management server through the communication module when a predetermined condition is satisfied, and perform a specific matching action when POI identification information is received from the POI management server; and

the POI management server including;

a network communication unit configured to communicate with the electronic device;

a POI database configured to configured to store therein the registered POI information; and

a server control unit configured to determine whether the location information received from the electronic device through the network communication unit is matched to the registered POI information stored in the POI database, and offer POI identification information to the electronic device through the network communication unit when the received location information is matched to the registered POI information.
