Abstract

In various exemplary embodiments, a system and method to provide smart media selection to a set of one or more individuals at a location associated with a display device of a receiver system is provided. In example embodiments, an indication of a presence change at the location is received. User specific information associated with the set of the one or more individuals identified as being at the location is accessed. A recommendation playlist based on the user specific information is generated.

21. A method comprising:

detecting presence of at least one viewer at a viewing location;

accessing user specific information for each individual viewer at the viewing location, the user specific information comprising a preselected list of a plurality of media content that are recorded or queued up for later viewing for each individual viewer;

generating, by one or more hardware processors, a single recommendation playlist for the at least one viewer at the viewing location based on commonalities within the user specific information, the recommendation playlist generated at least by compiling a list of common media content based on the preselected list of the plurality of media content that are recorded or queued up for later viewing for each individual viewer; and

causing presentation of the single recommendation playlist to the at least one viewer at the viewing location.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the detecting presence of the at least one viewer comprises detecting a change in presence of individual viewers at the viewing location,

23. The method of claim 22, further comprising pausing or stopping current playback of a media content based on the detecting of the change in presence.

24. The method of claim 22, further comprising triggering a change of media content displayed at the viewing location based on the detecting of the change in presence by causing display of a media content from the single recommendation playlist.

25. The method of claim 21, wherein

the user specific information further comprises a list of previously viewed media content for each individual viewer at the viewing location;

and

the generating the single recommendation playlist comprises removing the previously viewed media content for each individual viewer at the viewing location from the compiled list of common media content.

26. The method of claim 21, wherein the generating the single recommendation play list further comprises including a selection of media content of a friend of one of the at least one viewer at the viewing location.

27. The method of claim 21, wherein the detecting presence of the at least one viewer comprises capturing an image of an individual viewer, the method further comprising identifying the individual viewer using the captured image.

28. The method of claim 21, wherein the detecting presence of the at least one viewer comprises using a biometric device to detect a physical trait of an individual viewer, the method further comprising identifying the individual viewer using the physical trait.

29. The method of claim 21, further comprising:

identifying each individual viewer based on the detecting of the presence; and

accessing a user profile for each individual viewer, the user profile indicating preferences and attributes provided by the individual viewer.

30. A machine-readable storage medium having no transitory signals and storing instructions which, when executed by the at least one processor of a machine, cause the machine to perform operations comprising:

detecting presence of at least one viewer at a viewing location;

accessing user specific information for each individual viewer at the viewing location, the user specific information comprising a preselected list of a plurality of media content that are recorded or queued up for later viewing for each individual viewer;

generating a single recommendation playlist for the at least one viewer at the viewing location based on commonalities within the user specific information, the recommendation playlist generated at least by compiling a list of common media content based on the preselected list of the plurality of media content that are recorded or queued up for later viewing for each individual viewer; and

causing presentation of the single recommendation playlist to the at least one viewer at the viewing location.

31. The machine-readable storage medium of claim 30, wherein the detecting presence of the at least one viewer comprises detecting a change in presence of individual viewers at the viewing location.

32. The machine-readable storage medium of claim 31, wherein the operations further comprise pausing or stopping current playback of a media content based on the detecting of the change in presence.

33. The machine-readable storage medium of claim 31, wherein the operations further comprise triggering a change of media content displayed at the viewing location based on the detecting of the change in presence by causing display of a media content from the single recommendation playlist.

34. The machine-readable storage medium of claim 30, wherein

the user specific information further comprises a list of previously viewed media content for each individual viewer at the viewing location;

and

the generating the single recommendation playlist comprises removing the previously viewed media content for each individual viewer at the viewing location from the compiled list of common media content.

35. The machine-readable storage medium of claim 30, wherein the generating the single recommendation playlist further comprises including a selection of media content of a friend of one of the at least one viewer at the viewing location.

36. The machine-readable storage medium of claim 30, wherein the operations further comprise:

identifying each individual viewer based on the detecting of the presence; and

accessing a user profile for each individual viewer, the user profile indicating preferences and attributes provided by the individual viewer.

37. The machine-readable storage medium of claim 30, wherein the detecting presence of the at least one viewer comprises at least one selection from the group comprising:

capturing an image of an individual viewer, the method further comprising identifying the individual viewer using the captured image;

detecting a physical trait of an individual viewer, the method further comprising identifying the individual viewer using the detected physical trait;

detecting a voice of an individual viewer, the method further comprising identifying the individual viewer using the detected voice;

or

detecting a gesture of an individual viewer, the method further comprising identifying the individual viewer using the detected gesture.

38. A system comprising:

a presence detection module to detect presence of at east one viewer at a viewing location;

a user profile module configured to access user specific information for each individual viewer at the viewing location, the user specific information comprising a preselected list of a plurality of media content that are recorded or queued up for later viewing for each individual viewer; and

a recommendation module configured to generate a single recommendation playlist for the at least one viewer at the viewing location based on commonalities within the user specific information, the single recommendation playlist generated at least by compiling a list of common media content based on the preselected list of the plurality of media content that are recorded or queued up for later viewing for each individual viewer, the single recommendation playlist being presented to the at least one viewer at the viewing location.

The system of claim 38, wherein the presence detection module detects a change in presence of individual viewers at the viewing location, the system further comprising a media presentation module to trigger a change of media content displayed at the viewing location based on the change in presence by causing display of a media content from the single recommendation playlist.

The system of claim 38, further comprising a user identity module configured to identify each individual viewer based on the detected presence, wherein the user specific information comprises a user profile for each individual viewer, the user profile indicating preferences and attributes provided by the individual viewer.
