Abstract

A method of configuring downlink timings and transmitting a random access response message is provided for a random access procedure in a Long Term Evolution (LTE) system supporting carrier aggregation. The method for adjusting timing of a terminal in a wireless communication system supporting carrier aggregation of at least one carrier includes transmitting a Random Access Preamble to a base station, and receiving a Random Access Response with a Timing Advance Command (TAC) for commanding uplink timing adjustment from the base station, wherein the Random Access Response comprises information indicating a Timing Advance Group (TAG) to which the TAC is applied.

Claims

1. A method for uplink timing adjustment by a base station, the method comprising:

generating a medium access control (MAC) protocol data unit (PDU) including a MAC control element (MAC CE), wherein the MAC CE includes an identity of a timing advance group (TAG) and a timing advance command (TAC) associated with the TAG; and

transmitting the MAC PDU to a terminal,

wherein the TAG is a group of at least one cell having same uplink timing, and

wherein the identity of the TAG is set to 0 if the TAG is a primary TAG including a primary cell.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein a length of a field of the identity is 2 bits and a length of the TAC is 6 bits.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the identity of the TAG is set to a value other than 0 if the TAG is not the primary TAG.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

transmitting, to the terminal, a radio resource control message including an identity of a secondary TAG and a timing alignment timer (TAT) of the secondary TAG,

wherein the secondary TAG includes at least one secondary cell of the terminal.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the radio resource control message and the MAC PDU is used for adjusting uplink timing of the at least one secondary cell of the terminal.

6. A base station for uplink timing adjustment, the base station comprising:

a transceiver configured to transmit and receive a signal; and

a controller configured to generate a medium access control (MAC) protocol data unit (PDU) including a MAC control element (MAC CE), wherein the MAC CE includes an identity of a timing advance group (TAG) and a timing advance command (TAC) associated with the TAG and to transmit the MAC PDU to a terminal,

wherein the TAG is a group of at least one cell having same uplink timing, and

wherein the identity of the TAG is set to 0 if the TAG is a primary TAG including a primary cell.

7. The base station of claim 6,

wherein a length of a field of the identity is 2 bits and a length of the TAC is 6 bits.

8. The base station of claim 6,

wherein the identity of the TAG is set to a value other than 0 if the TAG is not the primary TAG.

9. The base station of claim 6, wherein the controller is further configured to transmit, to the terminal, a radio resource control message including an identity of a secondary TAG and a timing alignment timer (TAT) of the secondary TAG,

wherein the secondary TAG includes at least one secondary cell of the terminal.

10. The base station of claim 9, wherein the radio resource control message and the MAC PDU is used for adjusting uplink timing of the at least one secondary cell of the terminal.

11. A method for uplink timing adjustment by a terminal, the method comprising:

receiving, from a base station, a medium access control (MAC) protocol data unit (PDU) including a MAC control element (MAC CE), wherein the MAC CE includes an identity of a timing advance group (TAG) and a timing advance command (TAC) associated with the TAG;

identifying that the TAG is a primary TAG including a primary cell if the identity of the TAG is set to 0; and

adjusting uplink timing for at least one cell in the timing advance group (TAG) based on the received MAC PDU,

wherein the TAG is a group of at least one cell having same uplink timing.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein a length of a field of the identity is 2 bits and a length of the TAC is 6 bits.

13. The method of claim 11, the method further comprising:

identifying that the TAG does not includes the primary cell, if the identity of the TAG is set to other than 0.

14. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

receiving a radio resource control message including an identity of a secondary TAG and a timing alignment timer (TAT) of the secondary TAG,

wherein the secondary TAG includes at least one secondary cell of the terminal.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the adjusting the uplink timing comprises,

adjusting uplink timing of the at least one secondary cell of the terminal based on the radio resource control message and the MAC PDU.

16. A terminal for uplink timing adjustment, the terminal comprising:

a transceiver configured to transmit and receive a signal; and

a controller configured to receive, from a base station, a medium access control (MAC) protocol data unit (PDU) including a MAC control element (MAC CE), wherein the MAC CE includes an identity of a timing advance group (TAG) and a timing advance command (TAC) associated with the TAG, to identity that the TAG is a primary TAG including a primary cell if the identity of the TAG is set to 0, and to adjust uplink timing for at least one cell in the TAG based on the received MAC PDU,

wherein the TAG is a group of at least one cell having same uplink timing.

17. The terminal of claim 16,

wherein a length of a field of the identity is 2 bits and a length of the TAC is 6 bits.

18. The terminal of claim 16, wherein the controller is further configured to identify that

the TAG does not includes the primary cell, if the identity of the TAG is set to other than 0.

19. The terminal of claim 16, wherein the controller is further configured to receive a radio resource control message including an identity of a secondary TAG and a timing alignment timer (TAT) of the secondary TAG,

wherein the secondary TAG includes at least one secondary cell of the terminal.

20. The terminal of claim 19, wherein the controller is further configured to adjust uplink timing of the at least one secondary cell of the terminal based on the radio resource control message and the MAC PDU.
