Abstract

A gas delivery device (1 or 101 or 201) having a substantially U-shaped nasal cavity component (3 or 103 or 203) that fits inside the patient'"'"'s nostril is in fluid communication with a tubular guidance-stabilization system (8 or 108) that extends from the nasal cavity component (3 or 103 or 203), across the patient'"'"'s cheek, and over the patient'"'"'s ear. The tubular guidance-stabilization system (8 or 108) has a flexible wire or flexible strap that is embedded (or otherwise inserted) within the wall (33 or 120 or 220) of the tubular guidance-stabilization system (8 or 108) for the purpose of supporting the integrity of the gas delivery device (1 or 101 or 201) in order to maintain the tubular nasal cavity component (3 or 103 or 203) in the patient'"'"'s nostril. A stabilization patch (17 or 18 or 118) further secures the tubular guidance-stabilization system (8 or 108) to the cheek and/or behind the ear of the patient.

Claims

1. A system for delivery of a gas to a patient, the system comprising:

a tubular nasal cavity component configured for insertion into and stabilization in a nostril of a patient, the nasal cavity component sized and configured to supply an amount of gas required by the patient, the nasal cavity component comprising;

a first end having a first cross sectional area for flow, the first end configured for insertion into a nostril of a patient,

a second end having a second cross sectional area for flow, the second cross sectional area being smaller than the first cross sectional area of the first, and

a diverging flow path for promoting a diverging gas flow through the first end of the nasal cavity component;

a tubular guidance-stabilization system in fluid communication with the tubular nasal cavity component, the tubular guidance-stabilization system comprising;

a longitudinal tubular conduit having a tubular wall of medical grade plastic;

wherein the second end of the tubular nasal cavity is configured for fluid communication with the tubular guidance-stabilization system.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein a flexible wire, or flexible strap, is embedded in and extends along at least a portion of the longitudinal tubular wall.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the tubular nasal cavity component comprises a soft pliable material.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the tubular nasal cavity component comprises a shape memory material.

8. The system of claim 1, the tubular nasal cavity component further comprising:

a bend portion intermediate the first end and the second end.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the tubular nasal cavity component comprises a soft pliable material.

10. The system of claim 8, wherein the tubular nasal cavity component comprises a shape memory material.

11. The system of claim 8, wherein the bend portion of the tubular nasal cavity component is at an angle A, the angle A being an included angle between an axis of a first section of the tubular nasal cavity component proximate the first end and an axis of a second section of the tubular nasal cavity component proximate the second end, wherein the angle A ranges from about 30 degrees to about 90 degrees.

The system of claim 8, wherein an angle between an axis of a first section of the tubular nasal cavity component proximate the first end and a wall of the first section of the tubular nasal cavity component comprises diversion angle B, where diversion angle B ranges from about 3 degrees to about 30 degrees.

13. The system of claim 8, wherein the tubular nasal cavity component comprises a U-shape.

14. The system of claim 1, wherein the diverging flow path of the first end of the tubular nasal cavity component comprises a frusto conical shape.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein an angle between an axis of a first section of the tubular nasal cavity component proximate the first end and a wall of the first section of the tubular nasal cavity component proximate the first end comprises diversion angle B, where diversion angle B ranges from about 3 degrees to about 30 degrees.

16. The system of claim 1, wherein the tubular nasal cavity component comprises an exterior rib on the first end for insertion into a nostril of a patient.

17. The system of claim 1, wherein the tubular nasal cavity component comprises an exterior gripping member on a second end of the tubular nasal cavity component.

18. The system of claim 1, wherein the second end of the tubular nasal cavity component comprises an alignment slot and the tubular guidance-stabilization system comprises a key for alignment of the tubular nasal cavity component with the tubular guidance-stabilization system.

19. The system of claim 1, wherein the tubular nasal cavity component comprises internal ribs along a length of the tubular nasal cavity component.

20. The system of claim 1, wherein the tubular guidance-stabilization system comprises internal ribs extending along a length of the longitudinal tubular conduit.

21. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a first stabilization patch configured to affix the tubular guidance-stabilization system to a location of a cheek of a patient, when the system for delivery of a gas is in use.

22. The system of claim 21, further comprising:

a second stabilization patch configured to affix the tubular guidance-stabilization system to a location on a mastoid of a patient, when the system for delivery of a gas is in use.

23. The system of claim 22, further comprising:

a clip configured to affix the tubular guidance-stabilization system proximal to a shoulder of a patient, the shoulder on an opposite side of the patient from the mastoid where the second stabilization patch would be attached, when the system for delivery of a gas is in use.

27. The system of claim 8, further comprising:

a first stabilization patch configured to affix the tubular guidance-stabilization system to a location of a cheek of a patient, when the system for delivery of a gas is in use.

28. The system of claim 27, further comprising:

a second stabilization patch configured to affix the tubular guidance-stabilization system to a location on a mastoid of a patient, when the system for delivery of a gas is in use.

29. The system of claim 28, further comprising:

a clip configured to affix the tubular guidance-stabilization system proximal to a shoulder of a patient, the shoulder on an opposite side of the patient from the mastoid where the second stabilization patch would be attached, when the system for delivery of a gas is in use.

30. The system of claim 12, further comprising:

a first stabilization patch configured to affix the tubular guidance-stabilization system to a location of a cheek of a patient, when the system for delivery of a gas is in use.

31. The system of claim 30, further comprising:

a second stabilization patch configured to affix the tubular guidance-stabilization system to a location on a mastoid of a patient, when the system for delivery of a gas is in use.

32. The system of claim 31, further comprising:

a clip configured to affix the tubular guidance-stabilization system proximal to a shoulder of a patient, the shoulder on an opposite side of the patient from the mastoid where the second stabilization patch would be attached, when the system for delivery of a gas is in use.

33. The system of claim 1, wherein

the first end of the tubular nasal cavity has an outwardly flared configuration.

34. The system of claim 33 further comprising:

a bend portion intermediate the first section and the second section.

35. The system of claim 33, further comprising:

a first stabilization patch configured to affix the tubular guidance-stabilization system to a location of a cheek of a patient, when the system for delivery of a gas is in use.

36. The system of claim 34, further comprising:

a second stabilization patch configured to affix the tubular guidance-stabilization system to a location on a mastoid of a patient, when the system for delivery of a gas is in use.

37. The system of claim 35, further comprising:

a clip configured to affix the tubular guidance-stabilization system proximal to a shoulder of a patient, the shoulder on an opposite side of the patient from the mastoid where the second stabilization patch would be attached, when the system for delivery of a gas is in use.

38. The system of claim 34, wherein the first end of the tubular nasal cavity component is trumpet shaped at a proximal end of the first tubular section.

41. The system of claim 33, wherein the diverging flow path is frusto-conical in shape.

42. The system of claim 1, wherein the longitudinal conduit of the tubular guidance-stabilization system has a circular cross sectional area for gas flow there through.

43. The system of claim 1, wherein the longitudinal conduit of the tubular guidance-stabilization system has an elliptical cross sectional area for gas flow there through.

46. The system of claim 8, wherein the bend of the tubular nasal cavity component is at an angle A, the angle A being an included angle between an axis of a first section of the tubular nasal cavity component proximate the first end and an axis of a second section of the tubular nasal cavity component proximate the second end, wherein the angle A ranges from about 60 degrees to about 80 degrees.

47. The system of claim 33, wherein the bend portion of the tubular nasal cavity component is at an angle A, the angle A being an included angle between an axis of a first section of the tubular nasal cavity component proximate the first end and an axis of a second section of the tubular nasal cavity component proximate the second end, wherein the angle A ranges from about 60 degrees to about 80 degrees.

48. The system of claim 38, wherein the bend portion of the tubular nasal cavity component is at an angle A, the angle A being an included angle between an axis of a first section of the tubular nasal cavity component proximate the first end and an axis of a second section of the tubular nasal cavity component proximate the second end, wherein the angle A ranges from about 60 degrees to about 80 degrees.

49. The system of claim 41, wherein the bend portion of the tubular nasal cavity component is at an angle A, the angle A being an included angle between an axis of a first section of the tubular nasal cavity component proximate the first end and an axis of a second section of the tubular nasal cavity component proximate the second end, wherein the angle A ranges from about 60 degrees to about 80 degrees.

The system of claim 47, wherein an angle between an axis of the first section of the tubular nasal cavity component proximate the first end and a wall of the first section of the tubular nasal cavity component comprises diversion angle B, where diversion angle B ranges from about 3 degrees to about 30 degrees.

51. The system of claim 49, wherein an angle between an axis of the first section of the tubular nasal cavity component proximate the first end and a wall of the first section of the tubular nasal cavity component comprises diversion angle B, where diversion angle B ranges from about 3 degrees to about 30 degrees.

52. The system of claim 51, wherein the second section of the tubular nasal cavity comprises an internal slot proximate the second end for promoting alignment of the tubular nasal cavity with the tubular guidance-stabilization system.

53. The system of claim 2, the tubular nasal cavity component further comprising a bend portion intermediate the first end and the second end.

54. The system of claim 53, wherein the bend portion of the tubular nasal cavity component is at an angle A, the angle A being an included angle between an axis of a first section of the tubular nasal cavity component proximate the first end and an axis of a second section of the tubular nasal cavity component proximate the second end, wherein the angle A ranges from about 30 degrees to about 90 degrees.

55. The system of claim 54, wherein an angle between an axis of a first section of the tubular nasal cavity component proximate the first end and a wall of the first section of the tubular nasal cavity component proximate the first end comprises diversion angle B, where diversion angle B ranges from about 3 degrees to about 30 degrees.
