Abstract

A system is described for providing a virtual environment corresponding to a scene from nature. The virtual environment can be used to present performance metrics to a user. In some examples, the virtual environment can be a pond where performance metrics are represented using lily pads. The visual appearance of the lily pad can be dependent on metadata of the corresponding performance metric and the lily pads can be grouped according to how the performance metrics are grouped in the database

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method for presenting a collection of data, comprising:

providing, by a processor, a virtual environment having a visual appearance corresponding to a scene from nature;

providing, by the processor, a collection of icons within the virtual environment that represent the collection of data, the collection of icons including a plurality of icons that represent a plurality of performance metrics derived from the collection of data and a group icon, wherein the plurality of icons cluster around the group icon;

receiving, by the processor, a first input; and

displaying, by the processor, a value representing a performance metric on top of an icon from the plurality of icons that corresponds with the performance metric in response to receiving the first input.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the virtual environment is displayed on a touch display belonging to a table top device.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the first input is representative of selecting an area within the virtual environment that is unoccupied by the collection of icons.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the virtual environment is a pond, the plurality of icons are lily pad icons, and the group icon is a water lily icon.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 4, wherein the size of a lily pad icon dynamically changes according to a variance percentage parameter associated with the corresponding performance metric.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 4, wherein the visual appearance of the lily pad icon dynamically changes according to a health parameter associated with the corresponding performance metric.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, further comprising:

detecting, by the processor, that another icon other than the plurality of icons is within a boundary of the group icon; and

clustering, by the processor, the another icon to the group icon when detected.

8. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing one or more programs, the one or more programs comprising instructions for:

providing a virtual environment having a visual appearance corresponding to a scene from nature;

providing a collection of icons within the virtual environment that represent the collection of data, the collection of icons including a plurality of icons that represent a plurality of performance metrics derived from the collection of data and a group icon, wherein the plurality of icons cluster around the group icon;

receiving a first input; and

displaying a value representing a performance metric on top of an icon from the plurality of icons that corresponds with the performance metric in response to receiving the first input.

9. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 8, wherein the virtual environment is displayed on a touch display belonging to a table top device.

10. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 8, wherein the first input is representative of selecting an area within the virtual environment that is unoccupied by the collection of icons.

11. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 8, wherein the virtual environment is a pond, the plurality of icons are lily pad icons, and the group icon is a water lily icon.

12. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 11, wherein the size of a lily pad icon dynamically changes according to a variance percentage parameter associated with the corresponding performance metric.

13. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 11, wherein the visual appearance of the lily pad icon dynamically changes according to a health parameter associated with the corresponding performance metric.

14. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 8, further comprising:

detecting that another icon is moved within a boundary of the group icon; and

clustering the another icon to the group icon when detected.

15. A computer implemented system, comprising:

one or more computer processors; and

a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising instructions, that when executed, control the one or more computer processors to be configured for;

providing a virtual environment having a visual appearance corresponding to a scene from nature;

providing a collection of icons floating on the pond that represent the collection of data, the collection of icons including a plurality of icons that represent a plurality of performance metrics derived from the collection of data and a group icon, wherein the plurality of icons cluster around the group icon;

receiving a first input; and

displaying a value representing a performance metric on top of an icon from the plurality of icons that corresponds with the performance metric in response to receiving the first input.

16. The computer implemented system of claim 15, wherein the first input is representative of selecting an area within the virtual environment that is unoccupied by the collection of icons.

17. The computer implemented system of claim 15, wherein the virtual environment is a pond, the plurality of icons are lily pad icons, and the group icon is a water lily icon.

18. The computer implemented system of claim 17, wherein the size of a lily pad icon dynamically changes according to a variance percentage parameter associated with the corresponding performance metric.

19. The computer implemented system of claim 17, wherein the visual appearance of the lily pad icon dynamically changes according to a health parameter associated with the corresponding performance metric.

20. The computer implemented system of claim 15, further comprising:

detecting that another icon is moved within a boundary of the group icon; and

clustering the another icon to the group icon when detected.
