Abstract

A method for determining motional branch current in an ultrasonic transducer of an ultrasonic surgical device over multiple frequencies of a transducer drive signal. The method may comprise, at each of a plurality of frequencies of the transducer drive signal, oversampling a current and voltage of the transducer drive signal, receiving, by a processor, the current and voltage samples, and determining, by the processor, the motional branch current based on the current and voltage samples, a static capacitance of the ultrasonic transducer and the frequency of the transducer drive signal.

Claims

1. A surgical generator for use with at least one surgical instrument, comprising:

a power supply;

an output stage;

an ultrasonic generator module to provide at the output stage an ultrasonic drive signal for driving an ultrasonic surgical device; and

an electrosurgical generator module to provide at the output stage an electrosurgical drive signal for driving an electrosurgical device.

2. The surgical generator of claim 1, wherein the ultrasonic generator module and the electrosurgical generator module are implemented within a common housing.

3. The surgical generator of claim 1, wherein the electrosurgical drive signal for driving the ultrasonic surgical device has a higher root mean square (RMS) voltage than the electrosurgical drive signal for driving the electrosurgical device.

4. The surgical generator of claim 3, wherein the RMS voltage of the ultrasonic drive signal is about 420V RMS.

5. The surgical generator of claim 3, wherein the RMS voltage of the electrosurgical device is about 100V RMS.

6. The surgical generator of claim 1, wherein the output stage comprises:

a power amplifier in communication with the programmable logic device; and

a power transformer in electrical communication with the power amplifier, wherein the power transformer comprises a primary winding and a secondary winding isolated from the first winding.

The surgical generator of claim 6, wherein the secondary winding comprises a first end and a second end, and wherein causing the output stage to provide the ultrasonic drive signal comprises causing the ultrasonic drive signal to be present across the secondary winding between the first end and the second end.

The surgical generator of claim 6, wherein the secondary winding comprises a first end, a second end and a tap positioned between the first end and the second end, and wherein causing the output stage to provide the electrosurgical drive signal comprises causing the electrosurgical drive signal to be present between the tap and the second end of the secondary winding.

9. The surgical generator of claim 1, wherein at least one of providing the ultrasonic drive signal or providing the electrosurgical drive signal comprises:

recalling a waveform sample from a look-up table; and

modifying the waveform sample to generate a modified waveform; and

providing the modified waveform to the output stage.

10. A surgical generator for use with at least one surgical instrument, the surgical generator comprising:

an output stage; and

at least one programmable logic device to control the output stage, wherein the processor is programmed to;

cause the output stage to provide an ultrasonic drive signal to drive an ultrasonic surgical device; and

cause the output stage to provide an electrosurgical drive signal to drive an electrosurgical device.

11. The surgical generator of claim 10, wherein the output stage comprises:

a power amplifier in communication with the programmable logic device; and

a power transformer in electrical communication with the power amplifier, wherein the power transformer comprises a primary winding and a secondary winding isolated from the first winding.

The surgical generator of claim 11, wherein the secondary winding comprises a first end and a second end, and wherein causing the output stage to provide the ultrasonic drive signal comprises causing the ultrasonic drive signal to be present across the secondary winding between the first end and the second end.

The surgical generator of claim 11, wherein the secondary winding comprises a first end, a second end and a tap positioned between the first end and the second end, and wherein causing the output stage to provide the electrosurgical drive signal comprises causing the electrosurgical drive signal to be present between the tap and the second end of the secondary winding.

14. The surgical generator of claim 10, wherein the at least one programmable logic device comprises a field-programmable gate array (FPGA).

15. The surgical generator of claim 10, wherein the at least one programmable logic device comprises a digital signal processor.

16. The surgical generator of claim 10, wherein causing the output stage to provide at least one of the ultrasonic drive signal or the electrosurgical drive signal comprises:

recalling a waveform sample from a look-up table; and

modifying the waveform sample to generate a modified waveform; and

providing the modified waveform to the output stage.

17. The surgical generator of claim 16, wherein modifying the waveform sample comprises pre-distorting the waveform sample based on a feedback signal received by the programmable logic device.

18. The surgical generator of claim 17, wherein causing the output stage to provide the ultrasonic drive signal further comprises determining an impedance phase of tissue being treated by at least one of the ultrasonic surgical device and the electrosurgical device, and wherein modifying the waveform sample comprises modifying a frequency of the waveform sample to reduce a difference between the impedance phase and an impedance phase set point.

19. The surgical generator of claim 17, wherein modifying the waveform sample comprises executing a control algorithm.

20. The surgical generator of claim 19, wherein the control algorithm is a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) algorithm.
