Abstract

Provided is a method of receiving data from a vehicle having an onboard computer. The vehicle identification data location on the vehicle is optically scanned and matched to a second protocol database to identify the specific protocol useful for retrieving desired diagnostic data from the vehicle. A diagnostic device is connected to the vehicle onboard computer and polls the onboard computer to identify a protocol useful to establish a communication link between the diagnostic device and the onboard computer. Once the communication link is established, the diagnostic device is configured communicate an information request to the onboard computer in the specific protocol(s) associated with vehicle identification data. The diagnostic data received from the onboard computer may then be communicated to a remote diagnostic database, via a cellphone, to identify a possible vehicle fix(es) for defects associated with the received diagnostic data.

23. A method of receiving a vehicle having an onboard computer, the onboard computer configured to establish a communication link with a diagnostic device in response to receipt of a first signal transmitted in a first protocol, the onboard computer further being operative to communicate diagnostic information in response to receipt of a second signal in a second protocol, the method comprising the steps of:

a. optically scanning vehicle identification data located on the vehicle;

b. accessing a second protocol database, the second protocol database having a plurality of second protocols, each second protocol being associated with respective vehicle identification data;

c. matching the scanned vehicle identification data with the second protocol database, to identify a specific second protocol associated with the scanned vehicle identification data and useful for retrieving desired diagnostic data from the vehicle;

d. connecting a diagnostic device to the onboard computer;

e. polling the onboard computer to identify the first protocol;

f. configuring the diagnostic device to establish a communication link with the onboard computer using the first protocol; and

g. configuring the diagnostic device to communicate an information request to the onboard computer in the second protocol.

24. The method as recited in claim 23, wherein the vehicle identification data is reported by a barcode, and the method further comprises the step of scanning the barcode on the vehicle with a barcode scanner located on the diagnostic device.

25. The method as recited in claim 23, wherein the vehicle identification data comprises a vehicle identification number (VIN), and the method further comprises the step of scanning the VIN with an optical scanner located on the diagnostic device.

26. The method as recited in claim 23 wherein the second protocol database is stored on the diagnostic device.

27. The method as recited in claim 23 wherein the diagnostic device is a scan tool.

28. The method as recited in claim 23 wherein the diagnostic device is configured to receive information from the onboard computer independent of any resources of the cellphone.

29. The method as recited in claim 23, furthering comprising the steps of:

h. receiving diagnostic data associated with the second protocol at the diagnostic device, via the onboard computer;

i. transmitting the diagnostic data from the diagnostic device to a cellphone via a local connectivity network; and

j. transmitting the diagnostic data from a cellphone to a main server via a cellular telephone network, the main server having a diagnostic database being arranged to map the vehicle diagnostic data to a possible vehicle fix(es).

30. The method as recited in claim 29, wherein the diagnostic device is configured to receive information from the onboard computer independent of the cellphone.

31. The method as recited in claim 29 wherein the second protocol database is stored on the diagnostic device.

32. The method as recited in claim 29 wherein step (j) includes transmitting the diagnostic data from the cellphone to the main server automatically, independent of user intervention, in response to receipt of the diagnostic data by the cellphone.

33. The method as recited in claim 29 wherein step (i) includes storing the diagnostic data in the cellphone, and wherein step (j) includes transmitting the diagnostic data from the cellphone to the main server in response to input by a user.

34. The method as recited in claim 29 wherein the onboard computer is further configured to transmit private operational data in response to receipt of a private data request from the diagnostic device, the private data request being addressable using the second protocol.

35. The method as recited in claim 29, further including the step of:

k. associating the physical location with the cellphone and soliciting a bid to perform fix(es) associated with the diagnostic data from repair shops located within a search area of the physical location.

36. The method as recited in claim 35, wherein the cellphone includes a GPS device configured to generate position data associated with the position of the cellphone, wherein in step k) further includes transmitting the position data from the cellphone to the main server.

37. The method as recited in claim 36, further comprising the steps of:

l. receiving bids from a plurality of repair shops;

m. comparing the bids from the plurality of the repair shops; and

n. selecting one of the bids.

38. The method as recited in claim 37, wherein step (1) further comprises receiving the bids from the repair shop and routing the bids from the repair shop to the cellphone via the main server.

39. The method as recited in claim 29 further comprising the step of:

o. comparing combinations of diagnostic data received from the onboard computer with stored combinations of diagnostic data in a prior experience database, each stored combination of diagnostic data having an identified fix associated therewith and identifying the stored combination of diagnostic data ranked highest in relation to the diagnostic data received from the onboard computer the vehicle onboard computer.

40. The method as recited in claim 39 further comprising the step of determining whether the most likely fix(es) requires access to an additional diagnostic protocol.
