Abstract

Mobile devices enable users to access data and documents in a convenient portable format. The disclosed method and system enables management of permissions associated with documents to be transferred/moved onto a mobile device for review or reference by making the transfer simple and straight forward so that it may be easy for non-technically literate users using a printer driver metaphor on a sending device such as a personal computer.

25. A method of document delivery to a mobile device using mobile device based permissions, the method comprising:

registering the mobile device with a server coupled to a communications network, the registering including providing from the mobile device to the server a device identifier for the mobile device, along with a network address of the mobile device;

receiving a print permission request at the mobile device, the print permission request including a user identifier associated with a sending device;

sending a permission response to the server; and

if the permission response indicates an acceptance of the print permission request, receiving, from the sending device, a print transfer document.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein the permission response includes security information for the receiving of the print transfer document.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein the mobile device uses the server as a certificate authority to connect to the mobile device.

28. The method of claim 25, wherein the permission response includes parameters for document transfer.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein the parameters for document transfer include at least one of a maximum file size;

a document format;

a destination folder;

or a transfer mechanism.

30. The method of claim 25, wherein the permission response is limited by at least one of a time duration or a number of file transfers.

31. The method of claim 25, wherein the receiving the print transfer document is done using hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) post or secure hypertext transfer protocol (HTTPS) post from the sending device.

32. The method of claim 25, wherein the permission response is determined based on an input to a user interface of the mobile device.

33. A mobile device configured for document delivery using mobile device based permissions, the mobile device comprising:

a processor; and

a communications subsystem, wherein the mobile device is configured to;

register with a server coupled to a communications network, the registering including providing from the mobile device to the server a device identifier for the mobile device, along with a network address of the mobile device;

receive a print permission request, the print permission request including a user identifier associated with a sending device;

send a permission response to the server; and

if the permission response indicates an acceptance of the print permission request, receive from the sending device a print transfer document.

34. The mobile device of claim 33, wherein the permission response includes security information for the receiving of the print transfer document.

35. The mobile device of claim 34, wherein the mobile device uses the server as a certificate authority to connect to the mobile device.

36. The mobile device of claim 33, wherein the permission response includes parameters for document transfer.

37. The mobile device of claim 36, wherein the parameters for document transfer include at least one of a maximum file size;

a document format;

a destination folder;

or a transfer mechanism.

38. The mobile device of claim 33, wherein the permission response is limited by at least one of a time duration or a number of file transfers.

39. The mobile device of claim 33, wherein the mobile device is configured to receive the print transfer document using hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) post or secure hypertext transfer protocol (HTTPS) post from the sending device.

40. The mobile device of claim 33, wherein the permission response is determined based on an input to a user interface of the mobile device.

41. A non-transitory computer readable medium containing instructions for document delivery to a mobile device using mobile device based permissions, the instructions which when executed by a processor of the mobile device performing:

registering the mobile device with a server coupled to a communications network, the registering including providing from the mobile device to the server a device identifier for the mobile device, along with a network address of the mobile device;

receiving a print permission request at the mobile device, the print permission request including a user identifier associated with a sending device;

sending a permission response to the server; and

if the permission response indicates an acceptance of the print permission request, receiving, from the sending device, a print transfer document.

42. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 41, wherein the permission response includes security information for the receiving of the print transfer document.

43. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 42, wherein the mobile device uses the server as a certificate authority to connect to the mobile device.

44. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 41, wherein the permission response includes parameters for document transfer.

45. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 44, wherein the parameters for document transfer include at least one of a maximum file size;

a document format;

a destination folder;

or a transfer mechanism.

46. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 41, wherein the permission response is limited by at least one of a time duration or a number of file transfers.

47. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 41, wherein the receiving the print transfer document is done using hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) post or secure hypertext transfer protocol (HTTPS) post from the sending device.

48. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 41, wherein the permission response is determined based on an input to a user interface of the mobile device.
