Abstract

A system for replacing a heart valve of a patient. The system includes a delivery device and a prosthetic heart valve. The system is configured to be transitionable between a loaded state, a partially deployed state and a deployed state. In the loaded state, the prosthetic heart valve engages a coupling structure and is compressively retained within a primary capsule, which constrains the prosthetic heart valve in a compressed arrangement. In the partially deployed state, the prosthetic heart valve engages the coupling structure and is compressively retained within a secondary capsule, which constrains the prosthetic heart valve to a partially deployed arrangement. The partially deployed arrangement is less compressed than the compressed arrangement and less expanded than a deployed arrangement. In the deployed state, the primary and secondary capsules are retracted from over the prosthetic heart valve, which expands to the deployed arrangement and is released from the coupling structure.

Claims

1. A system for replacing a heart valve of a patient, the system comprising:

a delivery device comprising;

an inner shaft assembly including an intermediate portion providing a coupling structure,

a primary capsule slidably disposed over the inner shaft assembly, and

a secondary capsule slidably disposed over the inner shaft assembly; and

a prosthetic heart valve having a stent frame and a valve structure attached to the stent frame, the prosthetic heart valve being expandable from compressed arrangements to expanded arrangements;

wherein the system is configured to be transitionable between;

a loaded state in which the prosthetic heart valve engages the coupling structure and is compressively retained within the primary capsule, the primary capsule constraining the prosthetic heart valve in a compressed arrangement,

a partially deployed state in which the prosthetic heart valve engages the coupling structure and is compressively retained within the secondary capsule, the partially deployed state including the primary capsule at least partially retracted from over the prosthetic heart valve and the secondary capsule at least partially constraining the prosthetic heart valve to a partially deployed arrangement, the partially deployed arrangement being less compressed than the compressed arrangement and less expanded than a deployed arrangement,

a deployed state in which the primary and secondary capsules are refracted from over the prosthetic heart valve and the prosthetic heart valve is expanded to the deployed arrangement and released from the coupling structure.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the primary and secondary capsules are substantially non-compliant, and further wherein an inner diameter of the primary capsule is less than an inner diameter of the secondary capsule.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the partially deployed arrangement is expanded to at least about 70% of the expanded deployed arrangement.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein the partially deployed arrangement is expanded to at least about 90% of the expanded deployed arrangement.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein an axial length of the primary and secondary capsules is not less than an axial length of the prosthetic heart valve.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the loaded state includes an entirety of the prosthetic heart valve being disposed within the primary capsule.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein the partially deployed state includes an entirety of the prosthetic heart valve being disposed within the secondary capsule.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the secondary capsule defines a proximal end, a distal end, a lumen, and at least one aperture through a thickness of the secondary capsule and open to the lumen, the at least one aperture being located proximate the proximal end.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the secondary capsule defines a plurality of the apertures.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein the loaded state includes the secondary capsule located within the primary capsule.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein the primary capsule terminates at a distal end, and further wherein the secondary capsule is formed as an extension from the distal end.

12. The system of claim 1, wherein the device further includes:

a primary shaft attached to the primary capsule and slidably disposed over the inner shaft assembly for manipulating the primary capsule relative to the secondary capsule; and

a secondary shaft attached to the secondary capsule and slidably disposed over the inner shaft assembly for manipulating the secondary capsule relative to the primary capsule.

13. The system of claim 1, wherein the primary capsule comprises a proximal portion and a distal portion that are axially movable with respect to each other.

14. A method of deploying a stented prosthetic heart valve at an implantation site, the method comprising:

receiving a system in a loaded state, the system including a delivery device loaded with a prosthetic heart valve, the prosthetic heart valve having a stent frame to which a valve structure is attached, the delivery device including an inner shaft assembly, a primary capsule and a secondary capsule, the loaded state including the prosthetic heart valve coupled to the inner shaft assembly and compressibly retained within the primary capsule to a compressed arrangement that is less than an expanded arrangement;

delivering the prosthetic heart valve to a location proximate the implantation site though a bodily lumen of the patient with the system in the loaded state;

transitioning the system to a partially deployed arrangement, including the prosthetic heart valve coupled to the inner shaft assembly and compressibly retained in the secondary capsule in the partially deployed arrangement that is greater than the compressed arrangement and less than the expanded arrangement, the partially deployed arrangement including the primary capsule refracted from over the prosthetic heart valve;

arranging the prosthetic heart valve within the implantation site with the system in the partially deployed arrangement; and

transitioning the system to the expanded arrangement in which the secondary capsule is retracted from over the prosthetic heart valve and the prosthetic heart valve releases from the delivery device.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the partially deployed state includes the valve structure of the prosthetic heart valve functioning.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein functioning of the valve structure includes blood flow of the patient at the implantation site passing through the secondary capsule and being controlled by the valve structure.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the secondary capsule includes a lumen and at least one aperture, and further wherein functioning of the valve structure includes the blood flow of the patient flowing through the at least one aperture and into the lumen for interfacing with the valve structure.
