Abstract

Systems and methods providing users with a rich web experience are disclosed. In one embodiment, a client and at least one server are in communication using a dual communication link. In another embodiment, a markup language based instant messaging application is disclosed. The instant messaging application may include group instant messaging. The instant messaging application may also provide group member persistence and message persistence at the server. In another embodiment, a card based web application is disclosed, where the card information and character may be shared with other users or within a group. The cards may also be configurable by users.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

displaying, by a card sharing application, on a display of a first client device, a card that includes content, is shared by a group of users, and is associated with a first time;

receiving, by the card sharing application, input that is associated with a second time;

after receiving the input, performing, by the card sharing application, a comparison between the first time and the second time;

determining, by the card sharing application, based on the comparison, whether to display content of the card on the display of the first client device;

wherein the method is performed by one or more computing devices.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

prior to receiving the input, receiving, by the card sharing application, first input;

in response to receiving the first input, creating, by the card sharing application, the card.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the first time is a time that the card was sent to the first client device or to a second client device that is different than the first client device.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

displaying, by the card sharing application, a button;

wherein receiving the input comprises the user selecting the button;

wherein performing the comparison comprises performing the comparison in response to receiving the input.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the input comprises input that specifies the second time or a period of time that includes the second time.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein:

the input was received at a particular time;

the second time is before the particular time.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein:

performing the comparison comprises performing a plurality of comparisons, wherein each comparison of the plurality of comparisons is between the first time and a time associated with a different card of a plurality of cards that are viewable by the user through the card sharing application;

determining comprises, for each comparison of the plurality of comparisons, determining, based on said each comparison, whether to display, on the display of the first client device, a card, of the plurality of cards, that corresponds to said each comparison.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining to display the card only if the first time is before the second time.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining, based on the comparison, not to display the card;

after determining not to display the card, receiving, by the card sharing application, second input;

in response to receiving the second input;

determining to display the card;

causing the card to be displayed on the display of the first client device.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining, by the card sharing application, based on the comparison, to not display the card on the display of the first client device;

wherein an instance of the card is displayed on each display of one or more client devices of one or more users that are in the group of users even though the card sharing application determines not to display the card on the display of the first client device.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the user is a first user that is different than a second user that is in the group of users, the method further comprising, prior to receiving the input:

determining that the second user provided second input that causes an instance of the card, that is displayed on a display of a second client device of the second user, to not be displayed on the display of the second client device;

continuing to display the card on the display of the first client device even though the instance of the card is not displayed on the display of the second client device.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the card comprises content and markup language code for displaying the content.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the content comprises an image, video, JavaScript, or Flash.

14. A system comprising:

one or more processors;

one or more storage media storing instructions which, when executed by the one or more processors, cause;

displaying, by a card sharing application, on a display of a first client device, a card that includes content, is shared by a group of users, and is associated with a first time;

receiving, by the card sharing application, input that is associated with a second time;

after receiving the input, performing, by the card sharing application, a comparison between the first time and the second time;

determining, by the card sharing application, based on the comparison, whether to display content of the card on the display of the first client device.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause:

prior to receiving the input, receiving, by the card sharing application, first input;

in response to receiving the first input, creating, by the card sharing application, the card.

16. The system of claim 14, wherein the first time is a time that the card was sent to the first client device or to a second client device that is different than the first client device.

17. The system of claim 14, wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause:

displaying, by the card sharing application, a button;

wherein receiving the input comprises the user selecting the button;

wherein performing the comparison comprises performing the comparison in response to receiving the input.

18. The system of claim 14, wherein the input comprises input that specifies the second time or a period of time that includes the second time.

19. The system of claim 14, wherein:

the input was received at a particular time;

the second time is before the particular time.

20. The system of claim 14, wherein:

performing the comparison comprises performing a plurality of comparisons, wherein each comparison of the plurality of comparisons is between the first time and a time associated with a different card of a plurality of cards that are viewable by the user through the card sharing application;

determining comprises, for each comparison of the plurality of comparisons, determining, based on said each comparison, whether to display, on the display of the first client device, a card, of the plurality of cards, that corresponds to said each comparison.

21. The system of claim 14, wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause:

determining to display the card only if the first time is before the second time.

22. The system of claim 14, wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause:

determining, based on the comparison, not to display the card;

after determining not to display the card, receiving, by the card sharing application, second input;

in response to receiving the second input;

determining to display the card;

causing the card to be displayed on the display of the first client device.

23. The system of claim 14, wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause:

determining, by the card sharing application, based on the comparison, to not display the card on the display of the first client device;

wherein an instance of the card is displayed on each display of one or more client devices of one or more users that are in the group of users even though the card sharing application determines not to display the card on the display of the first client device.

24. The system of claim 14, wherein the user is a first user that is different than a second user that is in the group of users, wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause, prior to receiving the input:

determining that the second user provided second input that causes an instance of the card, that is displayed on a display of a second client device of the second user, to not be displayed on the display of the second client device;

continuing to display the card on the display of the first client device even though the instance of the card is not displayed on the display of the second client device.

25. The system of claim 14, wherein the card comprises content and markup language code for displaying the content.

26. The system of claim 25, wherein the content comprises an image, video, JavaScript, or Flash.
