Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to a system and method for determining a physiologic parameter of a patient. Specifically, embodiments provided herein include blood pressure cuffs that are adapted to be used in conjunction with a photoplethysmography sensor. The cuff as provided may be configured to be placed over the sensor and/or aligned in a specific manner relative to the sensor. Alternatively, the cuffs may include integral optical components.

Claims

1. A system, comprising:

a sensor configured to acquire photoplethysmography data and generate a signal relating to the photoplethysmography data, wherein the sensor comprises a flexible, bandage-type sensor body;

a blood pressure cuff configured to be coupled to a pressure transducer, wherein the sensor is removably coupled to a tissue-contacting surface of the blood pressure cuff; and

a monitor comprising a processor configured to;

receive a blood pressure signal from the pressure transducer;

receive the signal relating to the photoplethysmography data from the sensor; and

determine a systolic pressure of a patient based on both the blood pressure signal and the signal.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the processor is configured to inflate the blood pressure cuff to pressures greater than a systolic pressure.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the processor is configured to deflate the blood pressure cuff in a substantially linear manner.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein the processor is configured to determine a pressure in the blood pressure cuff at a first appearance of a plethysmographic waveform in the signal from the sensor during the linear deflation of the blood pressure cuff, and wherein the pressure correlates to the systolic pressure.

5. The system of claim 4, wherein the processor is configured to deflate the blood pressure cuff in a stepwise manner after determining the pressure correlating to the systolic pressure.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the sensor comprises at least one light emitter and at least one light detector.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the tissue-contacting surface of the blood pressure cuff comprises one or more alignment indicators configured to align the sensor on the tissue-contacting surface.

8. The system of claim 7, wherein the one or more alignment indicators comprise an attachment element configured to removably fix the sensor to the tissue-contacting surface.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the attachment element is a hook and loop attachment feature that couples the sensor to the tissue-contacting surface of the blood pressure cuff.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein a portion of blood pressure cuff is formed of a transparent material, such that the sensor disposed on the tissue-contacting surface is visible through the transparent material.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein the transparent material comprises a viewing window that allows an operator to adjust the position of the sensor relative to the blood pressure cuff during the monitoring process.

12. A patient monitoring system, comprising:

a sensor configured to acquire photoplethysmography data and generate one or more signals relating to the photoplethysmography data;

a blood pressure cuff configured to be coupled to a pressure transducer, wherein the sensor is removably disposed on a tissue-contacting surface of the blood pressure cuff; and

a monitor comprising a processor configured to;

receive the one or more signals from the sensor; and

determine a systolic pressure of a patient based on a first appearance of a plethysmographic waveform in the one or more signals received from the sensor.

13. The patient monitoring system of claim 12, wherein the processor is configured to inflate the blood pressure cuff to pressures greater than a systolic pressure.

14. The patient monitoring system of claim 12, wherein the processor is configured to deflate the blood pressure cuff in a substantially linear manner until the first appearance of the plethysmographic waveform.

15. The patient monitoring system of claim 12, wherein the processor is configured to determine the first appearance of the plethysmographic waveform with a pulse qualification of the plethysmographic waveform.

16. The patient monitoring system of claim 15, wherein the pulse qualification comprises an assessment of pulse quality.

17. The patient monitoring system of claim 12, wherein the processor is configured to deflate the blood pressure cuff in a stepwise manner after the first appearance of the plethysmographic waveform.

18. A method, comprising:

inflating the blood pressure cuff to pressures greater than a systolic pressure;

deflating the blood pressure cuff in a substantially linear manner;

receiving a signal from a disposable photoplethysmography sensor removably coupled on a tissue-contacting surface of a blood pressure cuff;

receiving a signal from a pressure transducer coupled to the blood pressure cuff;

determining a pressure in the blood pressure cuff at a first appearance of a plethysmographic waveform in the signal from the sensor during the linear deflation of the blood pressure cuff, wherein the pressure correlates to the systolic pressure; and

deflating the blood pressure cuff in a stepwise manner after determining the pressure correlating to the systolic pressure.

19. The method of claim 18, comprising determining the first appearance of the plethysmographic waveform with a pulse qualification of the plethysmographic waveform.

20. The method of claim 18, comprising determining a mean arterial pressure based on a peak pressure amplitude during the stepwise deflation.
