Abstract

Various embodiments of the present disclosure relate to systems and methods for presenting content to users using desktop widgets. Among other things, embodiments of the present disclosure allow users to quickly and easily access content (such as news articles) from their home screen without having to independently start a software application to do so.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

receiving, by a computing device of a user, a content digest that includes a task list comprising a plurality of tasks, wherein each task corresponds to one or more content items;

displaying the content digest on the home screen of the computing device via a desktop widget operating on the user'"'"'s computing device, wherein the desktop widget displays the content digest without input from the user; and

displaying, via the desktop widget, progress by the user in completing the tasks.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein each of the tasks in the task list is selectable via the desktop widget, and wherein displaying the progress by the user in completing the tasks includes determining which of the tasks have been selected by the user via the desktop widget.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising displaying, by the desktop widget, a plurality of content digests using a respective plurality of cards, wherein each content digest is displayed on a respective one of the cards.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein each respective card displays a date of the respective content digest associated with the card and a summary of the task list included in the respective content digest.

The method of claim 3, wherein the plurality of cards are displayed in an offset layered pattern and ordered based on the respective date of the content digest for each respective card, each respective card being selectable via the user'"'"'s computing device to access the respective content digest associated with the selected card.

6. The method of claim 3, wherein displaying the progress by the user in completing the tasks in the task list of a respective content digest includes visually indicating, on the card for the respective content digest, the tasks in the task list that the user has completed.

7. The method of claim 3, wherein displaying the progress by the user in completing the tasks in the task list of a respective content digest includes visually indicating, on the card for the respective content digest, the tasks in the task list that the user has yet to complete.

8. The method of claim 3, wherein the desktop widget is configured to remove a card from display in response to a user completing a predetermined number of tasks in the task list of the content digest associated with the card.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein displaying the progress by the user in completing the tasks includes determining which of the content items associated with each task have been displayed to the user via the user'"'"'s computing device.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein bonus content is provided to the user in response to a predetermined number of content items being displayed to the user via the user'"'"'s computing device.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the bonus content is only provided to the user in response to the predetermined number of content items being displayed within a predetermined period of time.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein the bonus content includes one or more of:

a coupon, a video, trivia, a game, and a loyalty reward.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the bonus content includes a trivia question regarding a content item associated with a task in the task list, and wherein the user is provided with additional bonus content in response to correctly answering the trivia question.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein each task in the task list corresponds to an article containing one or more of the content items.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein each task is selectable via the user'"'"'s computing device, and wherein selection of a task in the task list displays the article corresponding to the selected task to the user via the user'"'"'s computing device.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein the one or more content items include one or more of:

text, an image, video, audio, a map, a uniform resource locator, a graph, a slideshow, an article, and a file.

17. The method of claim 1, wherein the content digest includes a set of keywords related to the tasks in the task list for display via the user'"'"'s computing device.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein each respective keyword in the set of keywords corresponds to a respective task in the task list.

19. A tangible, non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed, cause a computing device to:

receive a content digest that includes a task list comprising a plurality of tasks, wherein each task corresponds to one or more content items;

display the content digest on a home screen of the computing device via a desktop widget operating on the computing device, wherein the desktop widget displays the content digest without input from a user of the computing device; and

display, via the desktop widget, progress by the user of the computing device in completing the tasks.

20. A system comprising:

a processor; and

memory in communication with the processor and storing instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the system to;

receive a content digest that includes a task list comprising a plurality of tasks, wherein each task corresponds to one or more content items;

display the content digest on a home screen of the system via a desktop widget operating on the system, wherein the desktop widget displays the content digest without input from a user of the system; and

display, via the desktop widget, progress by the user of the system in completing the tasks.
