Abstract

A system for enabling a modular mobile electronic device including a module communication network enabling data transfer between modules of the modular mobile electronic device, a module power network enabling power transfer between modules of the modular mobile electronic device, a set of module interfaces removably and mechanically coupling modules of the modular mobile electronic device to the modular mobile electronic device, and a supervisory controller communicatively coupled to the module communication network and electrically coupled to the module power network.

Claims

1. A system for enabling a modular mobile electronic device comprising:

a module communication network enabling data transfer between modules of the modular mobile electronic device;

a module power network enabling power transfer between modules of the modular mobile electronic device;

a set of module interfaces removably coupling modules of the modular mobile electronic device to the modular mobile electronic device; and

a supervisory controller communicatively coupled to the module communication network and electrically coupled to the module power network.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the module communication network comprises a network switch;

wherein data transfer between modules of the modular mobile electronic device is mediated by the network switch and the network switch is managed by the supervisory controller.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the network switch is a packet switch.

4. The system of claim 3, further comprising multiple data lanes connecting each module of the modular mobile electronic device to the network switch, each module having a scalable maximum bandwidth set by the supervisory controller.

The system of claim 4, wherein a first module is connected to the network switch by two data lanes, and data transfer between the first module and the network switch occurs over a single data lane of the two data lanes according to a data transfer configuration set by the supervisory controller.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein data transfer between a first module and a second module is assigned a maximum data transfer bandwidth by the supervisory controller.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein data transfers originating from a first module are assigned a data transfer priority by the supervisory controller.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein data transfer between a first module and a second module on the module communication network is initiated by the first module and completed without using a host or an intermediate module.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein data transfer between the first module and the second module occurs according to data transfer configuration data set by the supervisory controller.

10. The system of claim 9, wherein data transfer configuration data includes, for each of the first and the second module, a module address and a module priority level.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein the module power network comprises a power bus;

wherein the set of module interfaces electrically connects modules in parallel to the power bus and the set of module interfaces is connected to the power bus by a set of power management units and power transfer through the set of module interfaces is controlled by the set of power management units.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the set of power management units are controlled by the supervisory controller.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein the set of power management units control power transfer on the power bus according power states set by the supervisory controller.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein a power state for a first module connected to the modular mobile electronic device includes a maximum power transfer level.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein a power management unit connected to the first module electrically isolates the first module from the module power bus upon detecting a power transfer level greater than the maximum power transfer level.

16. The system of claim 1, wherein the supervisory controller is connected to a sensor of the module mobile electronic device.

17. The system of claim 16, where in the sensor is a temperature sensor and the supervisory controller changes a power state of a module according to data of the temperature sensor.

18. The system of claim 1, wherein the supervisory controller creates a module emulation profile based on module function data of a first module.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein the supervisory controller emulates a function of the first module when the first module is not connected to the modular mobile electronic device.

20. The system of claim 19, wherein the supervisory controller emulates a processor by directing data storage of a first module to store data from a sensor of a second module.
