Abstract

The present invention is directed to isolated microorganisms as well as strains and mutants thereof, biomasses, microbial oils, compositions, and cultures; methods of producing the microbial oils, biomasses, and mutants; and methods of using the isolated microorganisms, biomasses, and microbial oils.

Claims

47. A microbial oil comprising at least about 20% by weight eicosapentaenoic acid and less than about 5% by weight each of arachidonic acid, docosapentaenoic acid n-6, oleic acid, linoleic acid, linolenic acid, eicosenoic acid, erucic acid, and stearidonic acid.

48. The microbial oil of claim 47, further comprising at least about 25% by weight docosahexaenoic acid.

49. The microbial oil of any one of claims 47 to 48, further comprising at least about 35% by weight docosahexaenoic acid.

50. The microbial oil of claim any one of claims 47 to 49, wherein 3% or less by weight of the fatty acids in the triacylglycerol fraction is arachidonic acid.

51. The microbial oil of claim 50, wherein 2% or less by weight of the fatty acids in the triacylglycerol fraction is arachidonic acid.

52. The microbial oil of any one of claims 47 to 51, wherein said oil is a crude oil.

53. The microbial oil of any one of claims 47 to 51, wherein said oil is a refined oil.

54. The microbial oil of any one of claims 47 to 51, wherein said oil is a final oil.

55. A food product, cosmetic, or pharmaceutical composition for a human, comprising the microbial oil of any one of claims 47 to 54.

56. The food product of claim 55, wherein the food product is selected from (i) an infant formula;

(ii) milk, a beverage, a therapeutic drink, a nutritional drink, or a combination thereof;

(iii) an additive for human foods; and

(iv) a nutritional supplement.

57. The microbial oil of any one of claims 47 to 54, for use in treatment of inflammation or a condition related thereto.
