Abstract

An infusion pump includes: a housing, a pump actuator supported by the housing, electronics configured to control the pump actuator, a pain controlled analgesic (“PCA”) input device, a cord having a remote end connected to the PCA input device and a local end connected to the housing, a remote integrated circuit; and a local integrated circuit in communication with the electronics and the remote integrated circuit so as to provide operational information concerning the PCA input device to the electronics.

Claims

1. An infusion pump method comprising:

enabling a pain controlled analgesic input device associated with an infusion pump to be depressed;

sensing the depressed pain controlled analgesic input device;

determining an amount of time that the depressed pain controlled analgesic input device has been sensed; and

if the determined amount of time is greater than a predetermined value, providing an output indicative of the pain controlled analgesic input device being stuck.

2. The infusion pump method of claim 1, which includes, in response to providing the output, (i) audibly (ii) visually, or (iii) audibly/visually indicating that the pain controlled analgesic input device is stuck.

3. The infusion pump method of claim 1, which includes providing the output to a location remote from the infusion pump.

4. The infusion pump method of claim 1, which includes sending a bolus request output to the infusion pump if the determined amount of time is less than the predetermined value.

5. An infusion pump comprising:

a housing;

a pump actuator supported by the housing;

electronics configured to control the pump actuator;

a pain controlled analgesic input device; and

a controller programmed to (i) sense a depression of the pain controlled analgesic input device, (ii) determine an amount of time that the depressed pain controlled analgesic input device has been sensed, and (iii) if the determined amount of time is greater than a predetermined value, provide an output indicative of the pain controlled analgesic input device being stuck.

6. The infusion pump of claim 5, wherein the controller is a remote controller, and which includes a local controller that communicates with the remote controller, at least one of the remote controller and the local controller programmed to run (i), (ii), and (iii).

7. The infusion pump of claim 5, wherein the controller is programmed to provide the output to a location remote from the housing of the infusion pump.

8. The infusion pump of claim 5, wherein the controller is programmed to send a bolus request output if the determined amount of time is less than the predetermined value.

9. The infusion pump of claim 5, wherein the electronics include the controller.

The infusion pump of claim 5, wherein the controller is a first integrated circuit, and which includes a second integrated circuit that communicates with the first integrated circuit, at least one of the first integrated circuit and the second integrated circuit programmed to run (i), (ii), and (iii).

11. The infusion pump of claim 5, wherein the pain controlled analgesic device includes a button, the controller programmed to sense the depression of the pain controlled analgesic device when the button makes contact with an electrical contact.

12. An infusion pump method comprising:

depressing a pain controlled analgesic input device;

sending an electrical signal in response to the depressed pain controlled analgesic input device;

electronically sensing the sent electrical signal;

electronically determining whether the sensed electrical signal is discontinuous; and

if the sensed electrical signal is determined to be discontinuous, electronically sending an output indicative of the pain controlled analgesic input device functioning improperly.

13. The infusion pump method of claim 12, wherein the output indicating that a button of the pain controlled analgesic is functioning improperly is (i) audible, (ii) visual, or (iii) audible/visual.

14. The infusion pump method of claim 12, which includes sending the output to an infusion pump.

15. An infusion pump comprising:

a housing;

a pump actuator supported by the housing;

electronics configured to control the pump actuator;

a pain controlled analgesic (“

PCA”

) input device; and

a controller programmed to (i) send an electrical signal in response to the pain controlled analgesic input device being depressed, (ii) sense the sent electrical signal, (iii) determine whether the sensed electrical signal is discontinuous, and (iv) if the determination is the sensed signal is discontinuous, send an output indicative of the pain controlled analgesic input device functioning improperly.

16. The infusion pump of claim 15, wherein the output indicating that a button of the pain controlled analgesic is functioning improperly is (i) audible, (ii) visual, or (iii) audible/visual.

17. The infusion pump of claim 15, wherein the controller is a remote controller, and which includes a local controller that communicates with the remote controller, at least one of the remote controller and the local controller programmed to run (i) to (v).

18. The infusion pump of claim 17, wherein the remote controller includes an electrical contact for contacting a button of the pain controlled analgesic input device.

19. The infusion pump of claim 15, wherein the controller is programmed to provide the output to a location remote from the infusion pump housing.

20. The infusion pump of claim 15, wherein the electronics includes the controller.
