Abstract

The wireless power transmission is a system for providing wireless charging and/or primary power to electronic/electrical devices via microwave energy. The microwave energy is focused to a location by a power transmitter having one or more adaptively-phased microwave array emitters. Rectennas within the device to be charged receive and rectify the microwave energy and use it for battery charging and/or for primary power.

Claims

1. A wireless power transmitter comprising:

a controller and a phased array antenna having at least one electro-magnetic array transceiver for transmitting an electro-magnetic power transmission signal;

wherein the controller further configured to;

detect a presence of a plurality of mobile receivers;

transmit a first electro-magnetic power transmission signal to the plurality of mobile receivers at a first frequency;

receive a first indication of a power level of the first electro-magnetic power transmission signal from a first mobile receiver;

determine a second frequency based upon the received first indication of the power level;

transmit a second electro-magnetic power transmission signal to the first mobile receiver at the second frequency;

receive a second indication of a power level of the first electro-magnetic power transmission signal from a second mobile receiver;

determine a third frequency based upon the received second indication of the power level, wherein the second frequency and the third frequency are different; and

transmit a third electro-magnetic power transmission signal to the second mobile receiver at the third frequency.

2. The wireless power transmitter of claim 1 wherein the second electro-magnetic power transmission signal and the third electro-magnetic power transmission signal are transmitted concurrently.

3. The wireless power transmitter of claim 1 wherein the controller is further configured to stop transmitting the second electro-magnetic power transmission signal prior to transmitting the third electro-magnetic power transmission signal.

4. The wireless power transmitter of claim 1, wherein the phased array antenna includes array antennae that are arranged in a non-planar form.

5. The wireless power transmitter of claim 1 wherein the controller is further configured to select the first mobile receiver based upon a prioritization of the plurality of mobile receivers.

6. The wireless power transmitter of claim 1, wherein the electro-magnetic power transmission signal is a microwave.

7. A wireless power receiver comprising:

a rectifier configured to receive an electro-magnetic power transmission signal from a wireless power transmitter and feed a received electro-magnetic power transmission signal to a power meter;

wherein the power meter is configured to measures a power signal strength indication of the received electro-magnetic power transmission signal and provide a control logic with the power signal strength indication;

wherein the control logic is configured to receive the power signal strength indication and transmit the power signal strength indication to the wireless power transmitter; and

wherein the wireless power transmitter is configured to;

detect a presence of the wireless power receiver;

transmit the electro-magnetic power transmission signal to the wireless power receiver at a first frequency;

receive the indication of a power level from the wireless power receiver;

determine a second frequency based upon the received power signal strength indication;

transmit a second electro-magnetic power transmission signal to the power receiver at the second frequency;

receive a second power signal strength indication based on the second electro-magnetic power transmission signal from the wireless power receiver.

8. The wireless power receiver comprising of claim 7, wherein the electro-magnetic power transmission signal is a microwave.

9. The wireless power receiver comprising of claim 7, wherein the transmitter is further configured to determine a prioritization of the wireless power receiver.

10. The wireless power receiver comprising of claim 7, wherein the receiver is further configured to charge an internal battery with energy from the second electro-magnetic power transmission signal.

11. The wireless power receiver comprising of claim 7, wherein the receiver is further configured to power internal circuitry with energy from the second electro-magnetic power transmission signal.

12. A method for receiving power and data communication wirelessly from a wireless power transmitter comprising:

detecting, by the wireless power transmitter, a presence of a plurality of mobile receivers;

transmitting, by the wireless power transmitter, a first electro-magnetic power transmission signal to the plurality of mobile receivers at a first frequency;

receiving, by the wireless power transmitter, a first indication of a power level of the first electro-magnetic power transmission signal from a first mobile receiver;

determining, by the wireless power transmitter, a second frequency based upon the received first indication of the power level;

transmitting, by the wireless power transmitter, a second electro-magnetic power transmission signal to the first mobile receiver at the second frequency;

receiving, by the wireless power transmitter, a second indication of a power level of the first electro-magnetic power transmission signal from a second mobile receiver;

determining, by the wireless power transmitter, a third frequency based upon the received second indication of the power level, wherein the second frequency and the third frequency are different; and

transmitting, by the wireless power transmitter, a third electro-magnetic power transmission signal to the second mobile receiver at the third frequency.

13. The method for receiving power and data communication wirelessly from a wireless power transmitter of claim 12, wherein the second electro-magnetic power transmission signal and the third electro-magnetic power transmission signal are transmitted concurrently.

14. The method for receiving power and data communication wirelessly from a wireless power transmitter of claim 12, further comprising

stopping, by the wireless power transmitter, the transmission of the second electro-magnetic power transmission signal prior to transmitting the third electro-magnetic power transmission signal.

15. The method for receiving power and data communication wirelessly from a wireless power transmitter of claim 12, wherein the wireless power transmitter includes array antennae that are arranged in a non-planar form.

16. The method for receiving power and data communication wirelessly from a wireless power transmitter of claim 12, further comprising:

selecting, by the wireless power transmitter, the first mobile receiver based upon a prioritization of the plurality of mobile receivers.

17. The method for receiving power and data communication wirelessly from a wireless power transmitter of claim 12, wherein the electro-magnetic power transmission signal is a microwave.

18. The method for receiving power and data communication wirelessly from a wireless power transmitter of claim 12, further comprising:

charging, by the first mobile receiver, an internal battery of the first mobile receiver with energy from the second electro-magnetic power transmission signal.

19. The method for receiving power and data communication wirelessly from a wireless power transmitter of claim 18, further comprising:

charging, by the second mobile receiver, an internal battery of the second mobile receiver with energy from the third electro-magnetic power transmission signal.

20. The method for receiving power and data communication wirelessly from a wireless power transmitter of claim 12, further comprising:

powering, by the first mobile receiver, internal circuitry of the first mobile receiver with energy from the second electro-magnetic power transmission signal.
