Abstract

A radio communication system comprises a communication channel for the transmission of data packets from a primary station having a plurality of antennas to a secondary station having at least one antenna. The channel comprises a plurality of paths, and the primary station transmits a plurality of packets substantially simultaneously. Each of the plurality of packets is transmitted via a different subset of the plurality of paths, for example by arranging for each packet to be transmitted via a different antenna or antenna beam.

The secondary station receives the plurality of data packets, determines whether each packet is received correctly and signals this determination (typically as an acknowledgement or a negative acknowledgement to the primary station for each of the plurality of packets. The signalling may be by any convenient means, for example transmitting each acknowledgement or negative acknowledgement via a different subset of available uplink paths.

Claims

1. A radio communication system having a communication channel comprising:

a primary station having a plurality of antennas;

a secondary station having at least one antenna; and

a plurality of paths between the primary station and the secondary station, the primary station further comprising means for transmitting substantially simultaneously a plurality of data packets to the secondary station, each data packet being transmitted via a different subset of the plurality of paths, and

the secondary station further comprising means for receiving the plurality of data packets, for determining whether each data packet is received correctly, for notifying the primary station whether each data packet is received correctly, and for sending the primary station an indication of a number of simultaneous data streams that the secondary station is capable of receiving or processing.

The radio communication system according to claim 1, wherein the secondary station further comprises means for receiving a retransmission of incorrectly received data packets via selected ones of the subsets of the plurality of paths utilized for an initial transmission of the incorrectly received data packets.

The radio communication system according to claim 1, wherein at least one of a modulation scheme and a coding scheme for retransmission of said data packets on selected ones of the subsets of the plurality of paths is different from the modulation and coding scheme utilized for selected ones of the subsets of the plurality of paths during an initial transmission of said packets.

4. A primary station comprising:

plurality of antennas for use in a radio communication system having a communication channel comprising a plurality of paths between the primary station and a secondary station having at least one antenna; and

means for transmitting substantially simultaneously a plurality of data packets to the secondary station, each data packet being transmitted via a different subset of the plurality of paths;

means for receiving from the secondary station a determination of whether each data packet is received correctly; and

means for receiving from the secondary station an indication of a number of simultaneous data streams that the secondary station is capable of receiving or processing.

5. The primary station as claimed in claim 4, further comprising means for mapping each data packet to one of the plurality of antennas.

6. The primary station as claimed in claim 4, further comprising weighting means for mapping each data packet to a respective antenna beam.

7. The primary station as claimed in claim 4, further comprising means for varying transmission parameters relating to a data packet depending on the subset of paths over which the packet is transmitted.

8. The primary station as claimed in claim 7, wherein the varied transmission parameters are selected from modulation scheme, coding scheme and transmit power level.

9. The primary station as claimed in claim 7, further comprising closed loop power control means for adjusting independently a transmit power of each subset of paths.

The primary station as claimed in claim 4, further comprising means for retransmitting a data packet which was not received correctly by the secondary station via selected ones of the subsets of the plurality of paths, said selected ones of the subsets of the plurality of paths being selected based at least on a quality condition of said subsets of the plurality of paths.

11. The primary station as claimed in claim 10, wherein a modulation and coding scheme for retransmission of said data packets is selected based on said quality of said conditions of said subsets of the plurality of paths.

12. A secondary station comprising:

at least one antenna for use in a radio communication system having a communication channel comprising a plurality of paths between a primary station and the secondary station; and

means for receiving a plurality of data packets transmitted substantially simultaneously by the primary station, each data packet being transmitted via a different subset of the plurality of paths;

means for determining whether each data packet is received correctly;

means for notifying the primary station whether each data packet is received correctly; and

means for sending the primary station an indication of a number of simultaneous data streams that the secondary station is capable of receiving or processing.

13. The secondary station as claimed in claim 12, further comprising means for transmitting substantially simultaneously acknowledgements corresponding to each of the simultaneously transmitted data packets, each acknowledgement being transmitted via a different subset of the plurality of paths.

14. The secondary station as claimed in claim 12, further comprising means for signaling channel quality feedback information to the primary station, the information relating to each of the subset of paths used to transmit data packets.

15. The secondary station as claimed in claim 12, wherein the number of simultaneous data streams are transmitted via subsets of the plurality of paths using the same air interface resources.

16. The secondary station as claimed in claim 15, wherein the system operates according to a code division multiple access protocol and the air interface resources comprise channelization and spreading codes.

The secondary station according to claim 12, wherein the secondary station further comprises means for receiving a retransmission of incorrectly received data packets via selected ones of the subsets of the plurality of paths utilized for an initial transmission of the incorrectly received data packets.

The secondary station according to claim 12, wherein at least one of a modulation scheme and a coding scheme for retransmission of said data packets on selected ones of the subsets of the plurality of paths is different from the modulation and coding scheme utilized for selected ones of the subsets of the plurality of paths during an initial transmission of said packets.

19. A method of operating a radio communication system having a communication channel comprising a plurality of paths between a primary station having a plurality of antennas and a secondary station having at least one antenna, the method comprising:

transmitting, by the primary station, substantially simultaneously a plurality of data packets to the secondary station, each data packet being transmitted via a different subset of the plurality of paths,

receiving, by the secondary station, the plurality of data packets, determining, by the secondary station, whether each data packet is received correctly;

notifying the primary station, by the secondary station, whether each data packet is received correctly; and

sending the primary station, by the secondary station, an indication of a number of simultaneous data streams that the secondary station is capable of receiving or processing.

20. The method according to claim 19, further comprising receiving, by the secondary station, a retransmission of incorrectly received data packets via selected ones of the subsets of the plurality of paths utilized for an initial transmission of the incorrectly received data packets.

The method according to claim 19 wherein at least one of a modulation scheme and a coding scheme for retransmission of said data packets on selected ones of the subsets of the plurality of paths is different from the modulation and coding scheme utilized for selected ones of the subsets of the plurality of paths during an initial transmission of said packets.

22. A radio communication system comprising:

a primary station comprising a plurality of antennas and at least one processor configured to;

communicate over a plurality of paths between the plurality of antennas and at least one antenna of a secondary station; and

transmit a plurality of data packets substantially simultaneously to the secondary station, each data packet being transmitted via a different subset of the plurality of paths;

the secondary station comprising at least one processor configured to;

detect the plurality of data packets;

determine whether each data packet is received correctly;

transmit a signal to the primary station indicating whether each data packet is received correctly; and

transmit a signal to the primary station indicating a number of simultaneous data streams that the secondary station is capable of receiving or processing.

The radio communication system according to claim 22, wherein the at least one processor of the secondary station is further configured to receive, via the at least one antenna, a retransmission of incorrectly received data packets via selected ones of the subsets of the plurality of paths utilized for an initial transmission of the incorrectly received data packets.

The radio communication system according to claim 22, wherein at least one of a modulation scheme and a coding scheme for retransmission of said data packets on selected ones of the subsets of the plurality of paths is different from the modulation and coding scheme utilized for selected ones of the subsets of the plurality of paths during an initial transmission of said packets.

25. A primary station comprising:

a plurality of antennas configured to communicate over a plurality of paths between the primary station and a secondary station;

at least one processor configured to;

transmit a plurality of data packets substantially simultaneously to the secondary station such that each data packet is transmitted via a different subset of the plurality of paths;

detect a signal from the secondary station, the signal indicating whether each data packet is received correctly; and

receive from the secondary station an indication of a number of simultaneous data streams that the secondary station is capable of receiving or processing.

26. The primary station as claimed in claim 25, wherein the at least one processor is further configured to map each data packet to one of the plurality of antennas.

27. The primary station as claimed in claim 25, wherein the at least one processor is further configured to map each data packet to a respective antenna beam.

28. The primary station as claimed in claim 25, wherein the at least one processor is further configured to vary transmission parameters relating to a data packet depending on the subset of paths over which the packet is transmitted.

29. The primary station as claimed in claim 28, wherein the at least one processor is further configured to select a modulation scheme, a coding scheme or a transmit power level as a varied transmission parameter.

30. The primary station as claimed in claim 28, wherein the at least one processor is further configured to adjust a transmit power of each subset of paths independently.

31. The primary station as claimed in claim 25, wherein the at least one processor is further configured to retransmit a data packet received with error by the secondary station via selected ones of the plurality of paths used for initial transmission of the data packet received with error.

32. The primary station as claimed in claim 25, wherein at least one of a modulation scheme and a coding scheme for retransmission of said data packets on selected ones of the subsets of the plurality of paths is different from the modulation and coding scheme utilized for selected ones of the subsets of the plurality of paths during an initial transmission of said packets.

33. A secondary station comprising:

at least one antenna configured to communicate over a plurality of paths between the secondary station and a primary station and to receive a plurality of data packets that were transmitted substantially simultaneously by the primary station, each data packet being communicated via a different subset of the plurality of paths;

at least one processor configured to;

determine whether each data packet is received correctly;

transmit, via the at least one antenna, a signal to the primary station, the signal indicating whether each data packet is received correctly; and

transmit, via the at least one antenna, to the primary station an indication of a number of simultaneous data streams that the secondary station is capable of receiving or processing.

34. The secondary station as claimed in claim 33, wherein the at least one processor is further configured to transmit substantially simultaneously, via the at least one antenna, acknowledgements corresponding to each of the simultaneously transmitted data packets, each acknowledgement being transmitted via the different subset of the plurality of paths.

35. The secondary station as claimed in claim 33, wherein the at least one processor is further configured to transmit, via the at least one antenna, channel quality feedback information to the primary station, the channel quality feedback information relating to each of the subset of paths used to transmit data packets.

36. The secondary station as claimed in claim 33, wherein the at least one processor is further configured to transmit, via the at least one antenna, the signal indicating whether each data packet is received correctly using the same air interface resources used to receive the plurality of data packets.

37. The secondary station as claimed in claim 36, wherein the at least one processor is further configured to utilize a code division multiple access protocol and the air interface resources comprise channelization and spreading codes.

38. The secondary station as claimed in claim 33, wherein the at least one processor is further configured to receive, via the at least one antenna, a retransmission of incorrectly received data packets via selected ones of the subsets of the plurality of paths utilized for an initial transmission of the incorrectly received data packets.

The secondary station as claimed in claim 33, wherein at least one of a modulation scheme and a coding scheme for retransmission of said data packets on selected ones of the subsets of the plurality of paths is different from the modulation and coding scheme utilized for selected ones of the subsets of the plurality of paths during an initial transmission of said data packets.

40. The secondary station as claimed in claim 33, wherein the plurality of paths comprises direct paths.

41. The secondary station as claimed in claim 33, wherein the plurality of paths comprises indirect paths.

42. The secondary station as claimed in claim 41, wherein the indirect paths comprise one or more scatterers configured to reflect signals.
