Abstract

A driving circuit useful in a magnetic inductive coupling wireless communication system is disclosed. The circuit includes an inductor (coil; L) and capacitor (C) in series selectively coupled to a power source such as a rechargeable battery. The LC circuit is made to resonate in accordance with a Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) or other protocol. Such resonance produces a voltage across the inductor. This voltage is used to create a first voltage either by tapping into the coil, or by providing a transformer. The first voltage is coupled to the rechargeable battery by a diode. When the circuit resonates, and when the first voltage exceeds the voltage of the power source, the diode turns on, thus shunting excess current back to recharge the rechargeable battery. By use of this circuit, energy is conserved. Additionally, oscillations can be quickly dampened so as to allow the circuit to transmit at high data rates.

Claims

1. A driving circuit useful in a magnetic inductive coupling system, comprising:

a rechargeable battery;

a resonant circuit including a coil;

a node comprising a tap into a portion of the coil; and

a diode interposed between the tap and the rechargeable battery configured to shunt current to the rechargeable battery.

2. The circuit of claim 1, wherein the coil comprises a data telemetry coil.

3. The circuit of claim 2, further comprising at least one switch connected to the resonant circuit, wherein the at least one switch is operated by a modulated data signal to cause the data telemetry coil to wireless communicate data in accordance with the modulated data signal.

4. The circuit of claim 3, wherein the modulated data signal comprises two frequencies corresponding to two logic states.

5. The circuit of claim 1, wherein the diode functions to clamp a voltage across the coil to a maximum voltage.

6. The circuit of claim 1, wherein the resonant circuit comprises a capacitor in series with the coil.

7. The circuit of claim 1, wherein the resonant circuit does not include a discrete resistor.

8. The circuit of claim 1, further comprising a bypass capacitor in parallel with the rechargeable battery.

9. The circuit of claim 1, wherein the battery is configured to output a battery voltage at another node, and wherein the diode is configured to shunt current to the rechargeable battery by shunting the current to the another node.

10. A system, comprising

a hand-held external device for wirelessly interacting with an implantable medical device, comprising

a rechargeable battery,

a resonant circuit including a coil,

a node comprising a tap into a portion of the coil, and

a diode interposed between the tap and the rechargeable battery configured to shunt current to the rechargeable battery.

11. The system of claim 10, further comprising the implantable medical device.

12. The system of claim 10, wherein the coil comprises a data telemetry coil.

13. The system of claim 12, further comprising at least one switch connected to the resonant circuit, wherein the at least one switch is operated by a modulated data signal to cause the data telemetry coil to wireless communicate data in accordance with the modulated data signal.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein the modulated data signal comprises two frequencies corresponding to two logic states.

15. The system of claim 10, wherein the diode functions to clamp a voltage across the coil to a maximum voltage.

16. The system of claim 10, wherein the resonant circuit comprises a capacitor in series with the coil.

17. The system of claim 10, wherein the resonant circuit does not include a discrete resistor.

18. The system of claim 10, further comprising a bypass capacitor in parallel with the rechargeable battery.

19. The system of claim 10, wherein the battery is configured to output a battery voltage at another node, and wherein the diode is configured to shunt current to the rechargeable battery by shunting the current to the another node.
