Abstract

Described herein are techniques related one or more systems, apparatuses, methods, etc. for integrating a near field communications (NFC) coil antenna in a portable device. For example, the NFC antenna is integrated under a metal chassis of the portable device. The metal chassis and a conductive coating—that is integrated underneath the full metal chassis—are designed to include one or more slots to provide high impedance to Eddy current induced in the conductive coating.

Claims

1. A smartphone, comprising:

a metallic housing (100); and

a Near Field Communications (NFC) antenna (200) mounted within the metallic housing,

wherein the metallic housing comprises a slot (110), and wherein part of the NFC antenna is perpendicular to the slot,

wherein the NFC antenna comprises;

a Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC) antenna;

and wherein the FPC antenna is mounted between the metallic housing and a conductive coating.

2. The smartphone of claim 1, wherein the part of the NFC antenna is in a direction to the slot such that current induced by the NFC antenna is weakened.

3. The smartphone of claim 1, wherein the part of NFC antenna is aligned along a first direction and the slot is aligned along a second direction vertical to the first direction.

4. The smartphone of claim 1, wherein the FPC antenna is a coil antenna including continuous multiple loops that form a rectangular ring shaped antenna.

5. The smartphone of claim 1, wherein the NFC antenna comprises a coil antenna and is made out of a Printed Circuit Borad (PCB), a metal wire, created through a Laser Direct Structing (LDS) process, or directly embedded to the metallic housing and underneath the conductive coating.

6. The smarphone of claim 5, wherein the NFC antenna has four sides and is substantially rectangular.

7. The smartphone of claim 1 further comprising a display mounted to the metallic housing.

8. A Near Field Communications (NFC) antenna, comprising:

a continuous multiple loops of coil antenna that is integrated underneath a housing of a smartphone, the housing is constructed to include a slot that is perpendicular to part of the continuous multiple loops of coil antenna, wherein the housing is a metallic housing, and wherein the continuous multiple loops of coil antenna is coated over a conductive coating.

9. The NFC antenna of claim 8, wherein the part of the continuous multiple loops of coil antenna is in a direction to the slot such that current induced by the continuous multiple loops of coil antenna is weakened.

10. The smartphone of claim 8, wherein the part of the continuous multiple loops of coil antenna is aligned along a first direction and the slot is aligned along a second direction vertical to the first direction.

11. A handheld communications device, comprising:

a metallic housing (100); and

a Near Field Communications (NFC) antenna (200) mounted within the metallic housing,

wherein the metallic housing comprises a slot (110), and wherein part of the NFC antenna is perpendicular to the slot,

wherein the NFC antenna comprises;

a Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC) antenna;

and wherein the FPC antenna is mounted between the metallic housing and a conductive coating.

12. The handheld communications device of claim 11, wherein the part of the NFC antenna is in a direction to the slot such that current induced by the NFC antenna is weakened.

13. The handheld communications device of claim 11, wherein the part of NFC antenna is aligned along a first direction and the slot is aligned along a second direction vertical to the first direction.

14. The handheld communications device of claim 11, wherein the FPC antenna is a coil antenna including continuous multiple loops that form a rectangular ring shaped antenna.

15. The handheld communications device of claim 11, wherein the NFC antenna comprises a coil antenna and is made out of a Printed Circuit Borad (PCB), a metal wire, created through a Laser Direct Structing (LDS) process, or directly embedded to the metallic housing and underneath the conductive coating.

16. The handheld communications device of claim 15, wherein the NFC antenna has four sides and is substantially rectangular.

17. The handheld communications device of claim 11 further comprising a display mounted to the metallic housing.

18. The handheld communications device of claim 11, wherein the handheld communications device comprises a mobile phone.

19. The handheld communications device of claim 11, wherein the handheld communications device comprises a tablet.

20. The handheld communications device of claim 11, wherein the handheld communications device comprises a laptop computer.
