Abstract

A system for controlling a treatment device generates a graphical interface that visually prompts a user in a step-wise fashion to use the treatment device to perform a process of forming a pattern of lesions that extends both circumferentially and axially in different levels in a body region. The graphical interface displays for the user a visual record of the progress of the process from start to finish and guides the user so that so that individual lesions desired within a given level are all formed, and that a given level of lesions is not skipped.

Claims

1. A surgical system comprising a controller, a monitor and a radio frequency generator for applying radiofrequency energy to a patient to create tissue lesions in a surgical procedure at a series of axially spaced apart levels of tissue utilizing a single electrosurgical device, the monitor including graphic displays configured to simultaneously display an electrode array icon and a lesion icon, the electrode array icon indicating a first parameter and the lesion icon simultaneously indicating a) a series of axially spaced apart levels of tissue;

b) a designated level of tissue from the series of axially spaced apart levels of tissue;

c) a number of lesions formed in the designated level of tissue; and

d) a number of lesions not formed in the designated level of tissue and in other axially spaced apart levels of tissue.

2. The surgical system of claim 1, wherein the lesion icon is configured to change in real time to step wise guide a user through the surgical procedure to create lesions at the series of axially spaced apart levels of tissue.

3. The surgical system of claim 1, wherein the lesion icon is configured to change in real time to record the progress of the surgical procedure from a start to a finish of the surgical procedure and display a history of the surgical procedure.

4. The surgical system of claim 1, wherein the first parameter is one of a measured tissue temperature value at a given time, a measured electrode temperature value at a given time or a measured impedance value at a given time.

The surgical system of claim 1, wherein at treatment at one of the axially spaced apart levels of tissue, a balloon of the electrosurgical device connected to the generator is adapted to be only partially expanded, and at treatment at a subsequent level of the axially spaced apart levels of tissue, it the balloon of the electrosurgical device is adapted to be more fully expanded.

The surgical system of claim 1, wherein the electrode array icon is adapted to indicate a second parameter, the first and second parameters adapted to provide a numeric display which is adapted to be altered if a corresponding electrode channel of the electrosurgical device connected to the generator is disabled.

7. The surgical system of claim 6, wherein the numeric display is adapted to be altered by being blanked out.

The surgical system of claim 1, wherein a visual marking is configured to be provided at the lesion icon to mark where a user has visualized a selected anatomical home base reference for formation of lesions and the tissue axially spaced apart levels of tissue are configured to be graphically oriented relative to the mark.

The surgical system of claim 1, wherein the lesion icon includes first, second and third stacked lesion icons corresponding to first, second and third levels of the axially spaced apart levels of tissue, wherein after treatment at the first level of the axially spaced apart levels of tissue, a second graphical form is configured to be displayed for treatment at the second level of the axially spaced apart levels of tissue while an indication of treatment of the first level remains visible.

10. The surgical system of claim 9, wherein a visual marker is configured to change to align with the second lesion icon after treatment is completed at the first level of the axially spaced apart levels of tissue.

11. The surgical system of claim 10, wherein the second lesion icon is configured to be rotated for viewing along an axis during treatment at a corresponding level of the axially spaced apart levels of tissue.

14. The surgical system of claim 1, wherein the lesion icon is in a form of a series of discs, each disc segmented into a plurality of segments, each segment corresponding to a tissue treatment region at a selected level of the axially spaced apart levels of tissue.

15. The surgical system of claim 1, wherein a graphical depiction to another level of tissue is configured to change in response to sensing electrode impedance which indicates contact with target tissue.

16. A graphical user interface for an electrosurgical procedure for treatment of a sphincter in a gastro-intestinal tract of a patient, the electrosurgical procedure including applying radiofrequency energy through a plurality of radiofrequency electrodes to create a plurality of lesions at axially spaced levels of tissue, the graphical user interface comprising a graphical display having first and second sections, the first section providing an indication of at least one measured parameter of an electrode or of tissue at a treatment site and the second section providing a graphic indication simultaneously indicating a) a plurality of axially spaced levels of tissue b) a number of lesions formed at each of the axially spaced levels of tissue;

and c) the number of lesions not formed at each of the axially spaced levels of tissue.

17. The graphical user interface of claim 16, wherein the at least one measured parameter indicates a first parameter and a second parameter, the first parameter providing a tissue temperature value and the second parameter providing an impedance value.

18. The graphical user interface of claim 17, wherein the first section further includes a timer icon indicating an elapsed amount of time, the tissue temperature value and impedance value displayed in an array around the timer icon.

21. The graphical user interface of claim 18, wherein the graphical display indicates within the array if an electrode channel of an electrosurgical device having the plurality of radiofrequency electrodes is disabled.

22. A housing comprising a radio frequency generator, a controller, a display microprocessor, a graphics display monitor, and an I/O device coupling the controller to the display microprocessor, the graphics display monitor providing a graphic display of procedure parameters utilizing an electrosurgical device connected to the generator, the graphic display including a timer icon for indicating first a pre-set time period of a first energy application of the electrosurgical device and at least three linear arrays spaced apart along an arc, each of the at least three linear arrays corresponding to an electrode of the electrosurgical device, the timer icon further indicating a second pre-set time period of a second energy application of the electrosurgical device, each of the at least three linear arrays including a series of value displays to numerically indicate temperature of the tissue, temperature of an electrode of the electrosurgical device, and impedance, each of the at least three linear arrays extending from adjacent the timer icon and extending radially therefrom.

25. The housing of claim 22, wherein the graphic display indicates within the at least three linear arrays if an electrode channel of the electrosurgical device is disabled.

26. The housing of claim 22, wherein the at least three linear arrays are arranged to correspond to a multiple electrode configuration of the electrosurgical device.
