Abstract

The invention relates to systems and methods using a logical data model for aggregating data entities in a functional information system supported upon a computing platform, and also for providing systems and methods for analyzing economic information using a functional coordinate system.

Claims

1. A method for executing a command in a computing environment to perform a database operation utilizing a computerized representation of a functional system, the method comprising the steps of:

electronically storing a set of data entities in a database system, the data entities representing elements of the functional system, wherein the functional system comprises a group of elements associated by their roles as inputs, intermediates, outputs, or interactions related to inputs, intermediates, or outputs;

electronically assigning tags to a plurality of the data entities, the tags representing the functional attributes of the elements represented by the data entities, wherein the functional attributes are properties of the elements of the functional system;

electronically traversing the database to assign two or more nodes in a graph to two or more of the data entities representing the inputs, intermediates, or outputs;

electronically traversing the database to assign an edge in a graph connecting the two or more nodes in the graph, the edge representing the interactions related to inputs, intermediates, or outputs; and

enabling data creating, reading, updating, and deleting operations on the data entities and tags in the data store to correspond with changes in the functional system.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising electronically storing a computerized representation of a functional system syntax;

wherein the functional system syntax can be applied by a computer processor to establish the validity of expressions of elements of the functional system based on one or more of the functional attributes of elements of the system.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the interactions are functions transforming inputs to intermediates, intermediates to outputs, or inputs to outputs.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein an expression comprises two nodes and an edge.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the database represents an arbitrary number of nodes and edges.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

associating a value with the two or more nodes;

ordering the two or more nodes by functional proximity of the nodes;

wherein the functional proximity is morphological, physiological, genomic, anatomical, physical, or syntactic.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the proximity of the nodes are ordered, in part or in whole, through spectral analysis, eigenvector clustering, affinity propagation, canopy clustering, k-means clustering, or some combination thereof.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein proximate nodes have more common functional attributes than a mean of an arbitrarily large set of random pairs of nodes, as determined by a test of statistical significance.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the system is organic, mechanical, or chemical.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the elements comprise genes, cells, organelles, proteins, or nucleotides.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

constructing a visual representation of the graph;

ordering, weighting, coloring, constructing, or shaping one or more nodes, or one or more edges, based on functional attributes, tags, or interactions in the functional system.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

the visual representation of the graph;

electronically traversing a node or an edge on the graph;

retrieving a result regarding an element of the functional system.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the graph can be represented in n-dimensional coordinate space, further comprising:

identifying the coordinates in n dimensions of two or more nodes;

traversing the database to assign a weight to the two or more nodes, or to the elements they represent.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

removing one or more dimensions from the n-dimensional coordinate space to create a subset of the space;

electronically calculating a proximity metric on the subset.

15. The method claim 13, further comprising:

adding one or more dimensions to the n-dimensional coordinate space to create a superset of the space;

electronically calculating a proximity metric on the superset.

16. The method of claim 1, further comprising suggesting a connection or element to a user based on the functional attributes or the interactions in the functional system.

17. The method of claim 16, further comprising electronically representing a user as an element of the functional system;

wherein the acceptance of the suggestion by the user increases the frequency of an identical or similar suggestion, or strengthens the connection in the representation of the functional system; and

the rejection of the suggestion by the user decreases the frequency of an identical or similar suggestion, or weakens the connection in the representation of the functional system.

18. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

electronically defining one or more metrics to optimize;

defining a path to optimize among two or more nodes across one or more edges;

electronically traversing the database to optimize the path among the two or more nodes.

19. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving a query from a user;

electronically traversing the database to retrieve one or more common or proximate results;

providing the one or more results to the user.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the query or results are received or provided in syntactic, symbolic or graphical form, or a combination of syntactic, symbolic and graphical forms.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein a top-level domain represents the functional system, and a plurality of subdomains represent a plurality of the elements.

22. The method of claim 19, further comprising matching, recommending, or suggesting an element to two or more users based on the functional supply of an input or intermediate, or the functional demand of an intermediate or output.

23. The method of claim 1, wherein the data entities represent lexical units corresponding to elements of the functional system, further comprising:

electronically assigning tags representing lexical categories to a plurality of lexical units;

selecting a first lexical category;

electronically assigning tags representing lexical category stages to a plurality of lexical units in the first lexical category.

24. The method of claim 23, further comprising;

selecting a second lexical category;

electronically assigning tags representing lexical category stages to a plurality of lexical units in the second lexical category;

wherein the lexical categories and category stages comprise a stratified lexical architecture; and

wherein the database electronically represents the stratified lexical architecture, thereby enabling a computer processor to cluster the units based on their functional, syntactic, or symbolic relationships.

25. The method of claim 1, further comprising normalizing the distribution of a value associated with elements of the functional system, as determined by a statistical test.

26. The method of claim 1, wherein a node comprises a barcode, field, or locus.

27. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

dividing the functional system into two or more subsystems;

representing the two or more subsystems by two or more subgraphs.
