Abstract

A system for reduction of discontinuous-receive (DRx) transmissions for a network access device (NAD) of a telematics unit of a telematics-equipped vehicle includes: the telematics unit, configured to determine whether vehicle ignition of the telematics-equipped vehicle is on or off, the telematics unit further comprising the NAD, the NAD being configured to communicate with a network entity to perform a periodic updating procedure; the network entity, configured to communicate with the NAD for performance of the periodic updating procedure. The NAD and the network entity are further configured to reduce a frequency at which the periodic updating procedure is performed for the NAD in a DRx state relative to the frequency at which the periodic updating procedure is performed for the NAD in a vehicle ignition-on state.

Claims

1. A system for reduction of discontinuous-receive (DRx) transmissions for a network access device (NAD) of a telematics unit of a telematics-equipped vehicle, the system comprising:

the telematics unit, configured to determine whether vehicle ignition of the telematics-equipped vehicle is on or off, the telematics unit further comprising the NAD, the NAD being configured to communicate with a network entity to perform an updating procedure; and

the network entity, configured to communicate with the NAD for performance of the updating procedure;

wherein the NAD and the network entity are further configured to reduce a frequency at which the updating procedure is performed for the NAD in a DRx state relative to the frequency at which the updating procedure is performed for the NAD in a vehicle ignition-on state.

2. The system according to claim 1, wherein the NAD and the network entity being configured to reduce the frequency at which the updating procedure is performed further comprises:

the NAD being configured to transmit a first message to the network entity, the first message including an indication of the DRx state corresponding to the NAD; and

the network entity being configured to process the first message and transmit a second message to the NAD, the second message being configured to cause the NAD to reduce the frequency at which the updating procedure is performed.

3. The system according to claim 2, wherein the first message is a tracking area update (TAU) request message and the second message is a TAU accept message.

4. The system according to claim 3, wherein the first message comprises a device properties information element indicating that the NAD is configured for Non-Access Stratum (NAS) signaling low priority.

5. The system according to claim 3, wherein the second message comprises a T3412 value or a T3412 extended value, and the NAD is configured to use the T3412 value or the T3412 extended value to reduce the frequency at which the updating procedure is performed by modifying a timer of the NAD.

6. The system according to claim 2, wherein the NAD is configured to reduce the frequency at which the updating procedure is performed by modifying a timer associated with the updating procedure of the NAD based on the second message.

7. The system according to claim 6, wherein modification of the timer by the NAD includes deactivation of the timer.

The system according to claim 1, wherein the NAD is configured to, in response to the telematics unit detecting that the vehicle ignition is on, transition from the reduced DRx state frequency for performing the updating procedure to the vehicle ignition-on state frequency for performing the updating procedure.

9. The system according to claim 1, wherein the NAD is further configured to, in response to determining that the NAD is to be turned off, perform a detach procedure with respect to the network entity.

10. The system according to claim 1, wherein the network entity is a Mobility Management Entity (MME) of a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network.

The system according to claim 1, wherein the NAD is further configured to determine a change in area has occurred while in the DRx state and, in response to detection of the change in area, perform an updating procedure independent of any periodic updating procedure performed by the NAD in the DRx state.

12. A non-transitory, processor-readable medium having processor-executable instructions stored thereon for reduction of discontinuous-receive (DRx) transmissions for a network access device (NAD) of a telematics unit of a telematics-equipped vehicle, the processor-executable instructions, when executed by a processor, facilitating performance of the following steps:

determining that a vehicle ignition of the telematics-equipped vehicle is off;

transmitting an updating message to a network entity, wherein the updating message indicates the NAD corresponds to a DRx state;

receiving an updating response message from the network entity, wherein the updating response message indicates a reduction of a frequency at which the updating procedure is performed for the NAD for the DRx state relative to the frequency at which the updating procedure is performed for the NAD in a vehicle ignition-on state; and

modifying the frequency at which the updating procedure is performed for the NAD for the DRx state based on the updating response message.

13. The non-transitory, processor-readable medium of claim 12, wherein the modifying includes modifying a timer associated with the updating procedure of the NAD.

14. The non-transitory, processor-readable medium of claim 13, wherein modification of the timer includes deactivation of the timer.

15. The non-transitory, processor-readable medium of claim 12, wherein the updating message is a tracking area update (TAU) request message and the updating response message is a TAU accept message.

16. The non-transitory, processor-readable medium of claim 15, wherein the updating message comprises a device properties information element indicating that the NAD is configured for Non-Access Stratum (NAS) signaling low priority.

17. The non-transitory, processor-readable medium of claim 15, wherein the updating response message comprises a T3412 value or a T3412 extended value, and the modifying is based on the T3412 value or the T3412 extended value of the updating response message.

18. The non-transitory, processor-readable medium of claim 12, wherein the processor-executable instructions, when executed by a processor, further facilitate performance of the following steps:

detecting that the vehicle ignition is turned on while the NAD is in the DRx state; and

modify frequency for performing the updating procedure from the reduced DRx state frequency to the vehicle ignition-on state frequency.

19. The non-transitory, processor-readable medium of claim 12, wherein the network entity is a Mobility Management Entity (MME) of a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network.

20. The non-transitory, processor-readable medium of claim 12, wherein the processor-executable instructions, when executed by a processor, further facilitate performance of the following steps:

determining a change in area has occurred while in the DRx state;

performing, in response to detection of the change in area, an updating procedure independent of any periodic updating procedure performed by the NAD in the DRx state.
