Abstract

Methods and systems for displaying information derived from identification documents associated with individuals are disclosed. In some embodiments, the system first scans or retrieves identification information from an identification document. The system then receives information of an issuer of the identification document, information of a current location of the identification document, and information of a proposed use of the identification information. The system then receives a set of rules from a database based on the information of the issuer, the current location, and the proposed use. Based on the set of rules, the system processes the retrieved identification information so as to form redacted or processed identification information. The system then displays the redacted identification information.

Claims

1. A method for displaying information derived from an identification document associated with an individual to a user of an identification scanning system having the document scanner and a memory, the method comprising:

scanning, using the document scanner, an identification document in order to retrieve identification information from the identification document;

analyzing the identification information to identify a first set of information associated with the identification document, wherein the first set of information is indicative of an issuer of the identification document;

receiving from a device, or retrieving from the memory, a second set of information associated with the identification document, wherein the second set of information is indicative of a current location of the document scanner;

retrieving a previously-received setting from the memory comprising a third set of information associated with the identification document, wherein the third set of information is indicative of a proposed use of the identification information;

retrieving, from the memory, a set of rules for processing the identification information based on the first, second, and third sets of information, the retrieved set of rules specifying restrictions on use of identification information based on the issuer of the identification document, the current location of the document scanner, or the proposed use of the identification document;

processing the identification information to apply the use restrictions specified by the set of rules to the identification information, the use restrictions removing some of the identification information to form redacted identification information; and

displaying the redacted identification information to the user, wherein some of the identification information has been removed.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the first set of information is generated based on a jurisdiction-identification process.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the issuer of the of the identification document include a state government.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the second set of information is generated based on (1) a location indicative of where a software product capable of implementing the method is installed;

(2) a pre-configured location of a point of sale;

(3) a location identifiable based on an Internet virtual address;

or (4) a location calculated by a global positioning system.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the proposed use of the identification document includes an age verification, an identity verification, fraud prevention, a credit card application, a credit verification, a customer loyalty program, a marketing activity, or physical access approval/denial.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the set of rules is selected from a plurality of rules that correspond to a plurality of jurisdictions.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the plurality of jurisdictions include a country, a state, a province, a county, a city, a territory, or a district.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the set of rules is modified based on a user input.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising generating a record in response to the processing of the processed identification information.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the set of rules includes a first rule associated with a first jurisdiction and a second rule associated with a second jurisdiction, and wherein the first rule prevails in an event that the first rule is in conflict with the second rule.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein the redacted identification information includes a stripped version of the identification information.

13. The method of claim 12 further comprising presenting an indication showing that the redacted identification information is presented in compliance with the set of rules.

15. The method of claim 1 further comprising storing the redacted identification information.

16. A method for displaying identification information from an identification document associated with an individual to a user of an identification scanning system having a document scanner and a memory, the method comprising:

scanning, using the document scanner, an identification document in order to retrieve identification information from the identification document;

analyzing the identification information to identify a first set of information associated with the identification document, wherein the first set of information is indicative of an issuer of the identification document;

receiving from a service, or from memory, a second set of information associated with the identification document, wherein the second set of information is indicative of a current location of the identification document;

retrieving a previously-received setting from the memory comprising a third set of information associated with the identification document, wherein the third set of information is indicative of a proposed use of the identification document;

retrieving, from the memory, a set of rules for processing the identification information based on the first, second, and third sets of information, the retrieved set of rules specifying restrictions on use of identification information based on the issuer of the identification document, the current location of the identification document, or the proposed use of the identification document;

applying the use restrictions specified by the set or rules to the retrieved identification information, the use restrictions removing some of the identification information to form redacted identification information; and

displaying the redacted identification information to the user, wherein some of the identification information has been removed.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the first set of information is generated based on a jurisdiction-identification process.

18. The method of claim 16 wherein the issuer of the identification document include a state government.

19. The method of claim 16 wherein the second set of information is generated based on (1) a location indicative of where a software product capable of implementing the method is installed;

(2) a pre-configured location of a point of sale;

(3) a location identifiable based on an Internet virtual address;

or (4) a location calculated by a global positioning system.

20. The method of claim 16 wherein the proposed use of the identification document includes an age verification, an identity verification, fraud prevention, a credit card application, a credit verification, a customer loyalty program, or a marketing activity.

21. The method of claim 16 wherein the set of rules is selected from a plurality of rules that correspond to a plurality of jurisdictions.

22. The method of claim 21 wherein the plurality of jurisdictions include a country, a state, a province, a county, a city, a territory, or a district.

23. The method of claim 16 wherein the set of rules is modified based on a user input.

24. The method of claim 16 further comprising generating a record in response to the presenting of the received identification information.

26. The method of claim 16 further comprising storing the redacted identification information.

27. An identification scanning system for displaying identification information from an identification document associated with an individual to a user, the system comprising:

a processor;

a memory coupled to the processor;

a scanning device configured to receive a set of identification information by scanning the identification document;

a processing module configured to process the received set of identification information based on a set of rules and form a set of redacted identification information, wherein the set of rules specify restrictions on use of identification information based on a current location of the identification document or a proposed use of the identification document, and wherein the received set of identification information is processed by applying the use restrictions specified by the set of rules to the identification information, and wherein the use restrictions remove some of the identification information to form the set of redacted identification information;

a data storage unit configured to store the set of redacted identification information; and

a display module configured to display the set of redacted identification information, wherein some of the identification information has been removed.

28. The system of claim 27 wherein the set of rules is determined further based on an issuer of the identification document.

29. The system of claim 27 wherein the current location of the identification document is determined based on (1) a location indicative of where a software product capable of implementing the method is installed;

(2) a pre-configured location of a point of sale;

(3) a location identifiable based on an Internet virtual address;

or (4) a location calculated by a global positioning system.

30. The system of claim 27 wherein the proposed use of the identification document includes an age verification, an identity verification, fraud prevention, a credit card application, a credit verification, a customer loyalty program, or a marketing activity.

31. The system of claim 27 wherein the set of rules is selected from a plurality of rules that correspond to a plurality of jurisdictions.

32. The system of claim 27 wherein the set of rules is modified based on a user input.

33. The system of claim 27 further comprising a record-generation module configured to generate a record in response the process of the received set of identification information.
