Abstract
An orthopedic device for a shoulder joint includes a patient-specific alignment guide. The alignment guide includes a cap having a three-dimensional engagement surface customized in a pre-operative plan by computer imaging to be complementary and closely mate and conform to a humeral head of a proximal humerus of a patient. The alignment guide includes a tubular element extending from the cap and defining a longitudinal guiding bore for guiding an alignment pin at a patient-specific position and orientation determined in the pre-operative plan, and an orientation feature on the cap. The orientation feature is designed to orient the cap relative to the humeral head when the orientation feature is aligned with a landmark of the proximal humerus.

21. An orthopedic device for a shoulder joint comprising:
-
a patient-specific alignment guide including; a cap having a three-dimensional engagement surface customized in a pre-operative plan by computer imaging to closely mate and conform to a corresponding humeral head of a proximal humerus of a patient, a periphery of the cap being configured to surround an anatomic neck of the humeral head; an element defining a longitudinal guiding bore configured for guiding an alignment pin at a patient-specific position and an orientation determined in the pre-operative plan; an orientation feature on the cap, the orientation feature configured to orient the cap relative to the humeral head when the orientation feature is aligned with a landmark of the proximal humerus; and a resection formation provided at the periphery of the cap, the resection formation being configured for guiding a resection of the anatomic neck of the humeral head. - View Dependent Claims (22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28)

29. An orthopedic system for a shoulder joint comprising:
-
an alignment pin; and a patient-specific alignment guide including; a cap comprising a hemispherically-shaped shell, the cap having an exterior surface and a customized interior surface configured to be complementary and match at a selected particular position on a humeral head of a specific patient, and the cap including a periphery that terminates at a portion of an anatomic neck of the humeral head and is configured to surround the anatomic neck of the humeral head a tubular element extending from the cap and defining a longitudinal guiding bore for guiding the alignment pin at a patient-specific position and an orientation determined in the pre-operative plan; an orientation feature on the cap;
the orientation feature configured to orient the cap relative to the humeral head when the orientation feature is aligned with a bicipital groove of the proximal humerus; anda resection slot provided at the periphery of the cap, the resection slot being configured for guiding a resection of the anatomic neck of the humeral head. - View Dependent Claims (30, 31, 32, 33, 34)

35. A method of preparing a shoulder joint for an implant, the method comprising:
-
mounting a patient-specific alignment guide including a cap having a three-dimensional engagement surface customized in a pre-operative plan by computer imaging to closely mate and conform to a corresponding humeral head of a proximal humerus of a patient, a periphery of the cap being configured to surround an anatomic neck of the humeral head; orienting the cap using an orientation feature configured to be aligned with a bicipital groove of the proximal humerus; passing an alignment pin through a longitudinal guiding bore of a tubular element extending from the cap of the patient-specific alignment guide; inserting the alignment pin through the humeral head; and resecting the humeral head through a resection slot of the patient-specific alignment guide and forming a resected surface. - View Dependent Claims (36, 37, 38, 39, 40)
