Abstract

The present invention is directed to low solid surface coating compositions and methods of using the same. The low solid surface coating compositions comprise a self-crosslinking polymer, a solvent, a surfactant, and water. The low solid surface coating compositions can preferably have a total solid content of less than 15%.

Claims

1. A surface coating composition comprising:

a polymer, a solvent, a surfactant, and water;

wherein said polymer comprises a self-crosslinking polymer, and wherein said composition has a solid content of less than 15%.

2. The composition of claim 1, wherein said polymer has a solid content of 50% or less and comprises a polyurethane.

3. The composition of claim 1, wherein said solvent comprises a glycol ether.

4. The composition of claim 1, wherein said surfactant comprises an organo-fluorine, silicone-based surfactant, and/or silicone emulsion or colloid.

5. The composition of claim 1, wherein said solvent comprises mono butyl ether, and wherein said surfactant comprises a siloxane.

The composition of claim 1, wherein said polymer comprises between about 1 wt-% and about 25 wt-% of the composition, wherein said solvent comprises between about 0.01 wt-% and about 5 wt-% of the composition, wherein said surfactant comprises between about 0.01 wt-% and about 5 wt-% of the composition, and wherein water comprises between about 70 wt-% and about 98.98 wt-% of the composition.

7. The composition of the claim 6, wherein the composition has a viscosity of 15 cps or less, and wherein said composition has a solid content of 8% or less.

8. The composition of claim 7, wherein said composition has a shelf life of at least 6 months.

9. The composition of claim 1, further comprising at least one of the following additional functional ingredients:

a leveling agent, a wax, a fragrance, a dye, a polish, a corrosion inhibitor, a plasticizer, a fungicide, a biocide, a friction modifier, a metal complex, a rheology modifier, or a thickener.

10. A floor coating composition comprising:

between about 1 wt-% and about 25 wt-% of a polymer, wherein said polymer comprises a self-crosslinking polymer and has a solid content of 50% or less;

between about 0.01 wt-% and about 5 wt-% of a solvent;

between about 0.01 wt-% and about 5 wt-% of a surfactant; and

between about 70 wt-% and about 98.98 wt-% of water;

wherein said composition has a viscosity of 15 cps or less, wherein said composition has a solid content of less than 15%, and a shelf life of at least 6 months.

11. The composition of claim 10, wherein said solvent comprises a glycol ether, and wherein said surfactant comprises an organo-fluorine, silicone-based surfactant, and/or silicone emulsion or colloid.

The composition of claim 10, wherein said polymer comprises between about 5 wt-% and about 20 wt-% of the composition, wherein said solvent comprises between about 0.05 wt-% and about 2 wt-% of the composition, wherein said surfactant comprises between about 0.05 wt-% and about 1 wt-% of the composition, and wherein water comprises between about 75 wt-% and about 95 wt-% of the composition.

13. The composition of the claim 12, wherein the composition has a viscosity of 10 cps or less, and wherein said composition has a solid content of 8% or less, and a shelf life of at least 1 year.

14. A method of treating a surface comprising:

applying a composition comprising between about 1 wt-% and about 25 wt-% of a polymer, wherein said polymer comprises a self-crosslinking polymer and has a solid content of 50% or less;

between about 0.01 wt-% and about 5 wt-% of a solvent;

between about 0.01 wt-% and about 5 wt-% of a surfactant; and

between about 70 wt-% and about 98.98 wt-% of water;

wherein said composition has a viscosity of 15 cps or less, wherein said composition has a solid content of less than 15%.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein said applying step is performed by spraying, pouring, mopping, and/or wiping.

16. The method of claim 14, wherein said surface is a floor.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein said applying step is performed by a robotic floor coating device.

18. The method of claim 14, further comprising allowing the composition to dry.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising reapplying the composition.

The method of claim 14, wherein said polymer comprises between about 5 wt-% and about 20 wt-% of the composition, wherein said solvent comprises between about 0.05 wt-% and about 2 wt-% of the composition, wherein said surfactant comprises between about 0.05 wt-% and about 1 wt-% of the composition, wherein water comprises between about 75 wt-% and about 95 wt-% of the composition, wherein said composition has a viscosity of 10 cps or less, and wherein said composition has a solid content of 8% or less.
