Abstract

An electrochromic multi-layer stack is provided. The multi-layer stack includes an electrochromic multi-layer stack having a first substrate, a first electrically conductive layer, a first electrode layer, an ion conductor layer, a second substrate, a second electrically conductive layer, and a second electrode layer. The multi-layer stack includes a redox element, wherein the redox element is electrically isolated from the first and second electrically conductive layers and the first and second electrode layer and is laterally adjacent to either the first electrically conductive layer and the first electrode, or the second electrically conductive layer and the second electrode layer. A method for controlling an electrochromic device is also provided.

Claims

1. An electrochromic multi-layer stack comprising:

a first substrate;

a first electrically conductive layer;

a first electrode layer;

an ion conductor layer;

a second substrate;

a second electrically conductive layer;

a second electrode layer; and

a redox element, wherein the redox element is electrically isolated from the first and second electrically conductive layers and the first and second electrode layer and is laterally adjacent to either the first electrically conductive layer and the first electrode, or the second electrically conductive layer and the second electrode layer.

2. The electrochromic multi-layer stack of claim 1, wherein the redox element comprises a sequestration material and an auxiliary electrode.

3. The electrochromic multi-layer stack of claim 1, wherein the redox element has the ability to be biased independent of the electrodes, in order to be oxidized or reduced.

4. The electrochromic multi-layer stack of claim 1, wherein the redox element shares the first substrate with the first or second or both electrically conductive layers.

5. The electrochromic multi-layer stack of claim 2, wherein the auxiliary electrode is electrically isolated from one of the first or second electrically conductive layers or from both the first and second electrically conductive layers by a laser-scribed channel.

6. The electrochromic multi-layer stack of claim 2, wherein the auxiliary electrode and the sequestration material are electrically isolated from the first electrically conductive layer and the first electrode layer by a laser scribed channel.

7. The electrochromic multi-layer stack of claim 1, wherein the redox element has approximately the same thickness as the first electrically conductive layer and first electrode layer.

8. The electrochromic device of claim 1, wherein the redox element comprises a single material.

9. The electrochromic device of claim 1, wherein the redox element comprises the same material as the first electrically conductive layer.

10. The electrochromic device of claim 1, wherein the auxiliary electrode can be electrochemically reducible in the redox reaction in an electrical potential range versus lithium/lithium-ion that is greater than or equal to approximately 0.7 Volts and less than or equal to approximately 3.4 Volts.

11. The electrochromic device of claim 1, wherein the auxiliary electrode can be electrochemically oxidizable in the redox reaction in an electrical potential range versus lithium/lithium-ion that is greater than or equal to approximately 2 Volts and less than or equal to approximately 4.2 Volts.

12. The electrochromic stack of claim 2, wherein the sequestration material comprises a fluorocarbon material.

13. The electrochromic stack of claim 12, wherein the fluorocarbon material comprises CF_x.

14. The electrochromic stack of claim 2, wherein the sequestration material differs from the first and second electrode materials.

15. The electrochromic device of claim 1, wherein the redox element is located at an edge of the electrochromic device.

16. The electrochromic device of claim 1, wherein the total area of the redox element is less than 2% of the total area of the electrochromic device.

17. The electrochromic stack of claim 1, wherein the ion conductor further comprises a passive redox element.

18. A method for controlling an electrochromic device, comprising:

applying charge to the electrochromic device to reversibly cycle the electrochromic device between the optically less transmissive and optically more transmissive states, wherein the electrochromic device comprises a first electrode, a second electrode, an auxiliary electrode, and an ion conductor; and

applying charge periodically to the auxiliary electrode to adjust the oxidation state of the first or second electrode relative to the auxiliary electrode.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein applying charge periodically to the auxiliary electrode compensates for faradaic losses in the electrochromic device.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein applying charge periodically to the auxiliary electrode occurs at periodic intervals of about 2 to 4 hours between applying the charge.
