Abstract

A peripheral nerve conduction diagnosis system that utilizes an electrostimulation device having dry elastomer electrodes and a distance measuring device that allow a user to move the electrostimulation device along the skin of a patient while in constant contact with the skin and measure the distance moved.

Claims

1. A distance measuring device, at least configured to measure a distance between a first site on a surface and a second site on the surface when moved there between, comprising:

a sensor assembly having at least one illumination source configured to emit electromagnetic energy and to cooperate with at least one electromagnetic energy sensing module.

2. The distance measuring device of claim 1, wherein the distance measuring device is connected to an electrostimulation device, wherein the electrostimulation device includes at least two electrodes configured to deliver an electrical stimulation signal to a patient via the at least two electrodes.

3. The distance measuring device of claim 2, wherein the distance measuring device is further configured to measure the distance between a first site on skin of a patient and a second site on the skin of the patient when moved there between.

The distance measuring device of claim 3, wherein the at least one electromagnetic energy sensing module is configured to detect the electromagnetic energy reflected from the patient as the electrostimulation device moves between the first site on the on the skin of the patient and the second site on the skin of the patient.

5. The electrostimulation device of claim 4, wherein the at least one illumination source is configured to emit the electromagnetic energy through an aperture to the skin of the patient, wherein the one or more light sources emits at least one of:

visible light or infrared light.

6. The distance measuring device of claim 3, further comprising:

a display that displays the distance measured between the first site on the skin of the patient and the second site on the skin of the patient.

7. The distance measuring device of claim 1, wherein a signal is generated in response to the distance measuring device measuring a predetermined distance as the electrostimulation device is moved from the first site.

8. The electrostimulation device of claim 2, wherein at least one recording electrode is electrically connected to a diagnostic device, the at least one recording electrode for recording indications of nerve reactions of the patient in response to the electrostimulation device delivering the electrical stimulation signal to the patient.

9. An electrostimulation device configured to deliver electrical stimulation signals to a patient, comprising:

a distance measuring device connected to the electrostimulation device, the distance measuring device configured to measure a distance between a first site on a skin of a patient and a second site on the skin of the patient as the distance measuring device is moved therebetween.

10. The electrostimulation device of claim 9, wherein the distance measuring device further comprises:

a sensor assembly having at least one illumination source configured to emit electromagnetic energy onto the skin of the patient.

11. The electrostimulation device of claim 10, wherein the distance measuring device further comprises:

at least one electromagnetic energy sensing module configured to detect the electromagnetic energy reflected from the skin of the patient as the electrostimulation device moves between the first site on the skin of the patient and the second site on the skin of the patient.

12. The system of claim 11, further comprising:

a signal generator that generates a display representing the measured distance as the distance measuring device is moved between the first site on the skin of the patient and the second site on the skin of the patient.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein the signal generator generates a signal when the electrostimulation device has been moved a predetermined distance.

14. The electrostimulation device of claim 9, wherein the distance measuring device includes one or more light sources configured to emit electromagnetic energy through an aperture to an underlying surface of the skin of the patient.

15. The electrostimulation device of claim 14, wherein the one or more light sources emits at least one of:

visible light or infrared light.

16. The electrostimulation device of claim 9, wherein the electrostimulation device is electrically coupled to a diagnostic device configured to generate the electrical stimulation signals.

17. The electrostimulation device of claim 16, wherein at least one recording electrode is electrically connected to the diagnostic device, the at least one recording electrode for recording indications of nerve reactions of the patient in response to the electrostimulation device delivering the electrical stimulation signals to the patient.

18. A method, comprising:

delivering an electrical stimulation signal at a first site of a skin of a patient via an electrostimulation device and recording a first response;

illuminating the skin of the patient with electromagnetic energy by a measuring device connected to the electrostimulation device;

detecting by the measuring device the electromagnetic energy reflected by the skin of the patient as the electrostimulation device is moved from the first site of the skin of the patient; and

measuring by the measuring device a distance while the measuring device is moved from the first site of the skin of the patient.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising:

generating a signal in response to the electrostimulation device moving a predetermined distance from the first site on the skin of the patient to a second site on the skin of the patient.

20. The method of claim 19, further comprising:

delivering an electrical stimulation signal at the second site of the skin of the patient via the electrostimulation device and recording a second response.
