Abstract

Systems and methods for providing spoken messages that reflect event status of one or more hazard detection systems within a smart-home environment are described herein. The messages can inform occupants in concise manner that does not overload cognitive recognition of those occupants. For example, the messages may be prioritized to limit the amount of information that is spoken and intelligently condense information in as concise a manner as possible. This may be accomplished by using one or more speaking paradigms to compile audible messages to be played back through a speaker of the hazard detection system.

Claims

1. A method for incorporating room speaking logic into an audible message played back through a speaker of a first hazard detection system, the first hazard detection system being one of a plurality of hazard detection systems existing within a structure, the method, implemented in the first hazard detection system, comprising:

receiving state status from at least one of the plurality of hazard detection systems;

determining a number of the hazard detection systems that provided their state status;

determining a location status of the at least one hazard detection system that provided its state status;

compiling an audible message based on at least one speech paradigm that uses the number and the location status as factors in defining room information to be included in the audible message; and

playing the audible message through the speaker.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving state status comprises:

receiving a state status from a state machine associated with the first hazard detection system.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving state status comprises:

receiving a state status from at least a second hazard detection system existing within the structure.

The method of claim 1, wherein the state status is characterized as a heads-up state, an alarm state, and a clear state, wherein when the state status is one of the heads-up state and clear state, the audio message is played back without requiring coordination with buzzer sounds of an alarm, and wherein when the status is the alarm state, the audio message is played back in coordination with buzzer sounds of the alarm.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein a first one of the at least one speech paradigm comprises a plurality of conditions that specify speech paradigms to be used in the audible message.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein a first speech paradigm comprises specific room name identification.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein a second speech paradigm comprises a plurality of specific room name identifications.

8. The method of claim 5, wherein a second speech paradigm comprises a specific number of rooms.

9. The method of claim 5, wherein a third speech paradigm comprises a summarization.

10. A hazard detection system existing within a structure comprising a plurality of hazard detection systems, the system comprising:

wireless circuitry for wirelessly communicating with the other hazard detection systems within the structure; and

at least one processor coupled to receive data from the other hazard detection systems via the wireless circuitry, the at least processor operative to;

maintain a plurality of state machines that govern operation of the hazard detection system, including operation of an alarm and a speaker; and

when use of the speaker is required, access a speech logic engine coupled to at least one of the state machines and the speaker to incorporate one of a plurality of speech paradigms to characterize spoken information that is included in the audible message that is played back through the speaker.

11. The hazard detection system of claim 10, wherein the speech logic engine comprises a room paradigm that characterizes room information to be included in the audible message.

12. The hazard detection system of claim 10, wherein the speech logic engine comprises a condition paradigm that characterizes condition information to be included in the audible message.

13. The hazard detection system of claim 10, wherein the speech logic engine comprises a time paradigm that characterizes time information to be included in the audible message.

14. The hazard detection system of claim 10, wherein the speech logic engine comprises:

an audio library comprising a plurality of audio clips; and

a compiler that assembles a series of audio clips retrieved from the audio library based on at least one of the speech paradigms.

15. A method for playing back an audible message through a speaker of a hazard detection system during an actively sounding alarm, the method comprising:

activating an alarm comprising an alarming sequence characterized by alarm periods and non-alarm periods;

determining attributes responsible for activation of the alarm;

compiling an audible message to be played back through the speaker based application of at least one speech paradigm to the determined attributes; and

playing back at least a portion of the audible message during each one of the non-alarm periods.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the audible message spans at least two successive non-alarm periods.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein the alarm is a smoke alarm and the alarm sequence comprises a first plurality of alarm/voice cycles, a maximum no-alarm period, and a second plurality of alarm/voice cycles, wherein each alarm/voice cycle comprises three alarm periods and one non-alarm period, and wherein the maximum no-alarm period exists between the first and second plurality of alarm/voice cycles.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the audible message is a summarized audible message, and wherein the summarized audible message is played back during the non-alarm periods of the first and second plurality of alarm/voice cycles.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the summarized audible message specifies how many rooms are experiences an alarm condition.

20. The method of claim 17, where the audible message is a detailed audible message, and wherein the detailed audible message is played back during the maximum no-alarm period.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the detailed audible message specifies at least one specific room location experiencing an alarm condition.

22. The method of claim 15, wherein the alarm is a carbon monoxide alarm and the alarm sequence comprises a first pattern of alarm/voice cycles and a second pattern of alarm/voice cycles, wherein the first pattern is repeated for a period of time, and after the period of time elapses, the second pattern is repeated.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein each alarm/voice cycle of the first pattern comprises four alarm periods followed by a first non-alarm period, wherein the audible message spans two successive first non-alarm periods.

24. The method of claim 22, wherein each alarm/voice cycle of the second pattern comprises four alarm periods followed by a second non-alarm period, wherein an entirety of the audible message is played back during the second non-alarm period.
